Let's Go To Lunch

Post by EternalOptimist » Tue Jan 21, 2014 11:21 am

If you had an opportunity to go to lunch with any financial thought-leader past or present who would it be and why? What questions/discussions would you like to have? Let's try not to pile on Buffet :)

I would ask Bill Bernstein for lunch. I can't get enough of him at the Bogleheads reunions.

Benjamin Graham, because most of our modern stock-picking tycoons followed his advice. Kind of the founding father from which many people like Bogle, Buffett, etc., sprung out. I would love to learn about his stock picking methods directly from him (though I have read the Intelligent Investor, and am a Boglehead, it's still interesting to me to discuss it.) True intelligence stands the test of time, and Graham's wisdom has done just that even though it's been modified for modern day investing. The newer versions of TII surmise (indirectly) that Graham would probably recommend that the average person become a Boglehead.

I'm flattered for the mention.

sscritic knows we have a standing date for lunch and/or dinner whenever we are in the same county.

I also would love to be seated at a table with the folks mentioned in this thread, especially nisiprius.

OTOH, I have been to many meetings with shall we say famous people. It's funny, but the topics of conversation are mundane such as children, kidney stones, Milk of Magnesia, etc.

I was actually thinking of another country at one of your favorite restaurants. The meal is as almost as important as the company.

Ouch. I can live the rest of my life without ever discussing those.

I agree with Victoria about Bill Bernstein, just based on reading his books.

Would really like to have met Kurt Vonnegut (did see him speak at a university once at least, which was great). I don't totally share his ideas, just love his writing. He did make a comment on finance: "In this country..." (world? can't find the quote now sorry), "...you'd better grab more than you can possibly ever use, or you may wind up with nothing at all."

I'd pick Larry Swedroe and I'd buy. His advice has been very valuable to say the least. Probably owe Rick Ferri a lunch too.

Then there's Mr. Bogle and I'd clear my calendar for BIll Bernstein as well.

At least we know Buffett would pick tasty foods for the lunch

I'm sure Nassim Taleb could make for some interesting conversation, but a bit out of my league for keeping up with it or adding anything to a two-way conversation. I'd rather be a fly on the wall listening to his discourse with someone with conflicting ideas.

I'd go with Buffett too, but primarily because he would be the most inaccessible person of all the interesting people I want to meet (apart from dead people, but that's a thought experiment I don't wish to perform :)) The Bogleheads are equally interesting, but I can see you all at the annual BH conference.

I would have a grand buffet with Buffett.

Nisprius, ValueThinker, sscritic, livesoft - at the same table and same time ought to generate some real thought-provoking ideas.

At another table, we could have Bill Bernstein, Rick Ferri and Larry Swedroe - that ought to be interesting.

Really, there are quite a few posters on here that could make for an interesting lunch or dinner.

I don't know. I think it might depend. Abraham van Ketwich had a great idea and all, but what was the expense ratio? Was there a load? What was the ER? Perhaps Abraham was just being opportunistic. I mean, would the "Bogleheads" of the 1770s have approved?
