You can get a similar sized Japanese sedan brand new for the same price. It may not be a Lexus, but, still...

I would stay away from the IS250. They are known to have carbon build up (your warranty will cover it however). I have heard they are very sluggish as far as power is concerned. The new body style has just come out.

I think the price is too high as well. I bought a 2006 IS 350 in 2011 with 18k miles for 21,000. Loaded with nav. If you are in a place where you need AWD, you can even find 350's with AWD. I would buy an IS 350 if it was 23k 2009 AWD 33k miles and certified, but not the 250.

A few years ago my wife was car shopping and we looked at the IS250. Nice car but interior seemed cramped.

We ended up with an Infiniti G35x and have been extremely satisfied.

G35/G37 pricing for late model used is comparable or cheaper than the IS you are looking at and from experience the reliability of the Infiniti has been flawless. You might check one out. The G37x is an absolute rocket.

Uhm, while I understand what you're trying to say, you should probably be aware that Lexus IS a Japanese brand. Their parent company is Toyota :)

I think they know that, and indeed it is their point. :happy

I have owned all the fancy car brands and considered my self a "car guy". Lexus, BMW, Porsche, MB, etc.
a few points - 1. A preowned car after 1-3 years is much cheaper than a new one, so i like that you are looking at preowned. 2. A lexus is likely to be very reliable, all things considered. 3. If you plan to only keep for 2-3 years, a preowned car is the way to go.

THat being considered, it doesnt really matter what you buy, just do the research and get a decent price, and always always always walk out at least once in the negotiation.

The car you have chosen wouldnt be my first choice -- i would rather have an accord or a GTI, but whatever. Personal preference in cars, spouses, and wines is hard to debate intelligently.

In the end, it is about getting a good price. Saving $500 here or there I think is irrelevant - just dont get ripped off with a car that has been in an accident or is somehow a bad choice. For me, reliability is critical.

After 5 yrs a 33k lexus is250 loses 18k in value. You should be paying less than 50% of MSRP.

23k is way too much. You are better off buying a new one with something like PenFed car buying service with 0% interest and selling it after 5 years. Better yet, just buy a Honda. Lexus is just an overpriced Toyota. Check the crash tests on Toyota at iihs.org. I don't recommend them to anyone. The only Japanese brand I suggest to family is Honda. I'm also a big fan of many Ford products, and BMW. I've warmed to Audi as well.

Toyota made changes to 2014.5 Camry to address poor small offset crash test

My mother bought a Certified 2010 IS 250 RWD 25k miles without NAV, camera, or heated seats for $25k in October 2011. It drives great, is very smooth, and much nicer than her previous two cars (Toyota Corolla and VW Eos). Personally, if you have a need for AWD, I would be looking at the 350. I have not heard of much in the way of sluggishness, but hers is anything but on these flat Florida roads.

I almost bought an Infiniti G37 myself given the savings versus buying an IS for myself, but decided getting a second car in the end. Both would be good, reliable cars. I feel very safe in mom's IS.

I would buy a new Camary over this. This one is 33K miles closer to costly repairs and the AWD will cost more to service when something poops out.

I read an article recently (don't recall where), however it listed the IS 250 as overrated. It stated something about being pricey and lacking power.

2 years ago I bought a 2009 CPO BMW 328 X w/premium and cold weather and 43k miles for $23.5k. The additional miles are not worth all that much. At first glance, what you are showing seems very expensive for a 5 year old car.

2 owners in a short time I am interested to know why the previous owners sold it. I like to buy a car that an owner doesn't want to get rid of, at least s/he cares more about maintenance.

2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014.... that's six model years back. Kelly Blue Book online calls fair market $27 - $28 K. To me that's way too high for a 6 model year old car but they are the folk's in the know. Should be easy to shop online for your area though and if from a reputable source 3 yrs, 100K has great value in a used car.

I'd make up my mind fast though.

Can't speak to the IS,but having owned a couple Lexus's I can say they hold their value well and are very reliable.I present have 2 a RX and GX 450.The GX was CPO's and they really went through it. (1 owner-traded with 25k on it,new tires,rotors-pads,battery,filters) so far its been excellent.

You might able to get another 1000-1500 off the price and I would check to see why the second owner sold it.You can put the vin in here and find out the service history after you sign up.

ON SECOND THOUGHT: I'd give PenFed's 0% Buying Service a call and see what they can do on a NEW Mercedes CLA. Base retail is a hair under $30K but we are talking brand new 2014 with brand new warranty. If you think Lexus has brand appeal you won't notice the car sitting next to a new MB CLA.

I think it's a slow and small car for the money. I'd prefer an IS350 or even an ES350 (though supposedly a bit less "sporty"). If you don't care about cars and just want a somewhat reliable appliance with AWD then it will probably do.

And to the poster above, people may knock it for being a "fake Benz", but I agree, the new CLA is one beautiful car.

I drove a 2008 version at an Audi event for the A4. Overall, I preferred the Audi for the handling, but I recall the IS 250 had a nice interior. Ultimately bought the 2008 CTS AWD which had much more power and seemed to offer a better value.

This may be an example where "holding their value" is good for the seller, but not so much if you intend to keep it for a while.

Lexus certified program is sham

Post by alaguy »

Be VERY careful about Lexus pre-owned certificate. You pay a lot and is LIMITED although it is sold as bumper to bumper.I got screwed when a lexus dealer misrepresented the car and the National lexus administration would not force them to pay for service.

Agree... price is too high for this, although the low mileage + certified warranty is very nice.. but still too high especially for being the lowest base model 250..

Edit to add: I think you are being grossly overcharged for false security.. a 2009 Lexus with 33k miles is a modern reliable vehicle that has barely been broken in.. you likely will not need the warranty, therefor you overpay for it. I have 2x 2007 Lexus vehicles with 106k and 180k miles, and as long as you do your routine maintenance, change the tires, brakes, etc. the thing will run like a top till 200k easily, many go twice that. Don't overpay for a warranty you are very unlikely to ever need within 3 years and under 100k miles. In the modern era folks are way too concerned about warranties on reliable vehicles.. let the old school thinking go...

Somewhat related context.. this spring I bought a 2007 Lexus GS350 with just over 100k mileage for $12000 ... little older, but far better car, 300hp engine, Nav, Levinson stereo, and half the cost of this IS price. I personally don't like the IS motor or style anywhere near as much as the GS. There are many many dozens / hundreds of these cars on c-list coming off lease or grandpa turning it into a dealer to trade up to his next model, with low miles and nearly perfect interiors. I would keep looking. Go find a GS350... it is the most stealth sports sedan you can get IMHO..

To those suggesting Camry.. come on.. not the same car..

Heads up... this is basically a 4 year old post.

The giveaway for me was that no manufacturer (to my knowledge), certifies a car 9 years out. 5 years is the general cut off.

I will say this... what hacks me off about Camry and Lexus sister ES is that a fully-loaded, top of the line Camry runs about $38-ish. That's right where ES starts so you think "Hey, might as well get a lexus", but in order to get a decently equipped ES that comes with what you would expect in a Lexus, you're looking at $50k.

alaguy, Welcome!

FYI - This thread is from January 2014. For purchasing a car, the price is no longer relevant.
