Help with picking a mid-size luxury sedan

Post by tarheel15 » Thu Aug 01, 2013 8:48 am

Need some advice on picking a car:
BMW 535xi M sport
Audi A6 3.0T prestige
Infiniti M37s
Lexus GS350 F sport

May buy or lease. Currently have a BMW 335i and need something larger.

Take the M since you already have the 3 series. I doubt anything matches it AFA driving experience goes. And you already are used to how much maintenance these cars need.
I would stay away from Audis unless leasing, under warranty.

So I will be called a heretic with this post but I'd look at the new Chevy Impala. Not the same cache as an import but it is getting great reviews including Consumers Report which stated it's a better car than imports costing $20,000+ more.

I'm not saying you should but the Impala is something I would go look at if I were in the car market right now.

In my opinion (and experience), once you move from a compact to a mid size, it is not worth paying for performance. The latest BMW 5 series for example is simply too big. As are the others. Face it - once you move up to the 5 series size, you are driving a boat and it feels like a boat. I agree with the previous poster that you may as well look at an Impala or Kia Cadenza or Avalon. The performance difference between those and the ones you are looking at is not worth the price differential.

I have a 06 Lexus GS 300 AWD - and love it - best car I have ever owned. Never even had a minor issue with the car and have put on more than a few miles. I don't know about the newer performance model though - we have an e46 M3 - so we get our performance there :) and use this as our "cruiser".

Lexus or Infiniti if you want a hassle free experience. German if not. Been there...done both.

Have you checked out the Cadillac CTS or XTS? Believe it or not the Buick Lacrosse doesn't appear to bad on paper, either. For these American cars, I'd expect the repair costs to be less than the imports.

I'd probably go with the Audi. Maybe lease it new and trade up later, or buy slightly used (under warranty) to offset future repair costs.

I've always loved the 5 series until the current generation. Simply doesn't feel like a BMW. I've driven the current 535 on the autobahn and its solid and controlled but boring. The interior ergonomics and design are great, but It lost the fun factor of previous 5-series. Give the Tesla Model S a shot you may be surprised.

Also, the new Lexus GS has been destroying the 5-series in reviews...the consensus is that its more fun to drive. Can't speak from experience, although personally, I'm not sure I could overcome the styling no matter how good the driving experience is

I'd go with the Lexus from your list. I'd also look at Acura.

Agree with Livesoft. If going to spend money for BMW 5 series or similar expensive ICE should upgrade to the car (Tesla Model S) with highest Consumer Reports score and most fun to drive.

Have you looked at Acura yet? The TL might be just what you'd like.

Acura has nothing in this class. Well technically they have the RLX which was just released, but its laughable. The most recent consumer reports explicitly said to save $25k and get an Accord V6. The TL with AWD is decent, but the OP will not be happy with it coming from a 3 series.

Seems to me though that the OP wants a car that drives well. Acuras are designed on a FWD platform, so none of them will feel that great. I have a TSX which I got for value, reliability, style and features, but I honestly wish I spent a bit more and got a RWD based car like a BMW 3, Infiniti G37, or Lexus IS. Whenever I drive the thing, I regret that decision. So yeah, I saved a few bucks but I'm unhappy and gladly would have paid a little extra to get something I enjoy.

Tesla or Lexus GS are the new drivers cars....They are fun to drive, just like the way the old BMW 5 used to be

The Hyundai Genesis sedan surprised me when I rented one a while back - nice car - regular engine is 333hp V6 but available with a 429hp V8 too! - possibly worth a test drive if you can get over the nameplate.

The M would be overkill. A 550i is a fantastic car.

Personally, I have a love/hate relationship with my 330XI. Great fun car to drive, but with 112K miles on it, it is killing me on repairs.

I'll go Lexus, Infinity, or Audi next. No BMW for me.

I'd look at the Impala. If you're set on an import, the Volvo S80 might be worth a look.

We really enjoyed our Acura 3.5RL. That said we now drive a Toyota Camry Hybrid of which the Lexus version would make a lovely car, IMHO.

The current Lexus GS350 to me looks cheap inside and out compared to the old model.

I got turned off from the 5-series a few years ago when they put that stupid gearshift "paddle" thing in it, and you could only get dull-looking exterior colors. That's just me, though.

Personally, I'd go with the A6 and either buy an extended warranty from Audi or sell it when the standard warranty expires (4 yrs/50k).

The M37 has a strong, reliable engine, but the styling doesn't do it for me either. The new Q50 is out, but that's probably not much larger than your BMW 335.

I have a 2008 TL-Type S and love its performance but it is not very big, nor terribly comfortable. My 2001 Maxima is MUCH roomier and more comfortable.

I would also recommend looking at a Hyundai. I've ridden in a Sonata owned by my sister-in-law and it seems very nice. Their cars get great reviews too.
In theory, theory and practice are identical. In practice, they often differ.

Ha, no. Out of a Wikipedia gallery. I lean to big four-wheel drives myself. Currently a 95 Bronco.

All nice cars. Personally I'd eliminate the BMW and Audi as they are notoriously expensive to fix and maintain.

The Lexus G350 F sport is sweet.

I had a 2008 335XI and sold for the same reasons. Presently drive an Acura TL SH-AWD and am very happy with it. Doesn't drive quite a like a BMW, but still drives really nice and has much more room than the 3 series. Cheaper than all of the above mentioned options too, and it's a Honda.

Lexus or Acura.

BMW is a shop queen.

Is it me, or does the new Impala look like a cross between an Accord and Acura TL?
