What are your top companies for customer service?

Post by texasdiver » Tue Apr 16, 2013 9:08 pm

Some companies are legendary for customer service and going above and beyond. I'm familiar with some but certainly not all. I'm just wondering who else has favorite companies that have world class customer service. On my list are the following:

Costco: Will take returns of anything anytime for any reason (except for some electronics). I tested this by returning an 8 year old broken Dyson vacuum.

Nordstrom: Pretty much the same. Legend has it the Nordstrom in Fairbanks Alaska once took a return of a set of car tires even though they have never sold car tires (apparently the previous tenant of the building was a department store that did sell tires)

Discount Tire: They recently fixed my wife's flat for free even though she bought the tires at Costco.

REI: Same return policy as Costco. Although better prices can be found elsewhere.

USAA: Best bank I've ever dealt with.

Vanguard: More for the low fees rather than customer service, although I've never had a problem with their customer service.

Amazon and Zappos for mail order. Free shipping and effortless returns.

Silver Cloud Hotels: This is a Northwest chain and the only place ever stay when traveling to Seattle. To bad they haven't come to Texas yet.

Alaska Airlines: Having worked and lived in Alaska for 15 years during which time I traveled weekly or monthly I can't count the number of times Alaska Airlines has gone above and beyond for me.

LAN Chile. We fly to Chile once a year or so as my wife's family is there. I'll go way out of my way to fly on LAN Chile vs American which is the only other option we have.

So what companies are on your list? Here in Texas I've heard Southwest Airlines and Frost Bank are two. But I haven't experienced them enough to know yet. I'm curious what other companies Bogleheads have found to be their favorites.

I always get great customer service from the IRS and some local restaurants that I frequent.

Of the companies that I've actually used the "customer service", I'd vote for REI and Amica Insurance.

REI.

Have never had a problem with them, ever.

Things they did without even blinking:

- REturned a backpack with an infant carrier that was only used once (didn't fit well) a year after I bought it. I felt sheepish bringin it back but they accepted it no questions asked (I had the receipt.)

- Returned something no receipt for credit

- Brought in a gift card that I couldn't think of how to spend and they gave me cash on the spot - didn't even have to ask.

- Brought stuff back that I didn't like, no questions asked.

It's worht the premium price to have this good customever service. I now use REI for all my hi-end gear, because of it. I haven't come across a company with equivalent cust service.

Any time I have to use "customer service" the company gets a major black mark. They should handle things correctly the first time.

I have also had great experiences with Amazon. I have had very few problems, but when I do, they are corrected immediately without a lot of discussion.

I second your recommendation of Discount Tire. Great service and prices. Now that you can schedule an appointment online, tire rotation is very fast (about 20 minutes). They really know tires and are the number one retail customer of Michelin Tire.

Locally, I would add a small electric supplier, Central Georgia EMC. Always polite and very responsive to customer needs. Much better han the larger electric suppliers like Georgia Power or Duke Energy.

Chase and Vanguard

I recently moved my checking account to Chase. They have been wonderful including a personal visit to our home to facilitate signatures. Chase also offers substantial financial benefits to veterans.

We have never been disappointed with Vanguard's service. The few times they goofed, they always made a correction.

Best customer service I've ever experienced: Bank of America for their online payroll service. They always answer the phone or online chat immediately, and the representatives are not only knowledgable about their product but also about the various tax-related topics. Not once have I encountered a rep who was unable to resolve my situation or who had to pass me off to a higher-up.

If only the plain-old banking experience there was so great. :-)

Wells Fargo - at least at my local branch (then again, it was previously a Wachovia which provided excellent service and rates).

Chase - with their retail shop being run by the old Bank One outfit, when you walk into a branch you have at least 3 people approach you to help and even those who are walking someplace else in the branch will say "hello" to you as a person, instead as only a robot would at some other unnamed "competitor banks".

Tiffany's - for those who don't mind plunking down :moneybag .

Honda Corporate offices in California

Mercedes-Benz - head office

LL Bean - hands down.

American Express - don't leave home without it.

L. L. Bean won my loyalty for life when my daughter, who was at college, ordered something from them and it didn't arrive. It had been shipped UPS and UPS had played hardball: they delivered it to the dorm's front desk and they had a signature and that was that. The signature was illegible and it wasn't my daughter's signature but UPS didn't think that mattered. She called L. L. Bean and they said "Oh, we're terribly sorry, we'll send another one out right away, no charge."

I hate to say this, but my Car Dealership.

I bought a new car 9 years ago. I can just stop in anytime they are open, and they'll wash it for free, giver me a cookie and pop, while I look at a large aquarium, use their Wi-Fi or read magazines. Kids have a play area.

I don't go there any more for servicing (way too expensive), but sure will count that perk next time I buy a car and the bids are close.

I just wanted to put in a plug for local, privately owned businesses. Whenever possible and practical, we buy from a local establishment be it the hardware store, electrical supply shop, garden center, frame shop, book store, etc I have found many local businesses go out the way to provide excellent service and customer satisfaction. Case in point is our local hardware store. We purchased a Weber propane grill from them several years age. Surprisingly, they were several dollars cheaper than the big box store, delivered and set up for free. Several years later when I needed a replacement cover, they simply went to,the aisle and picked out the right size for me - no hassle, no searching - they knew what I bought and what I needed.

Costco and Apple.

I guess I have to say Amazon because I never had to deal with their customer service.

The worst for service is Walmart. That, and having to deal with phone providers.

For me, in addition to Costco, I have to give a big shout out to the Motor Vehicles Department in Montpelier, VT. About ten years ago they went through a big change, there is someone there to answer your questions, give you the form you need and tell you what else is required (they do need to follow the law!) There is a decent sized waiting area and a remote signaling system that tells you which window you need to go to when your number is called.

There is sometimes a wait, but avoiding peak hours, I can often be in and out of there in 20 minutes or less. A year ago we moved and I went to get my address changed on my license (I could have done this on the internet, but as it was one of the "enhanced" licenses (useful for crossing the nearby Quebec border) I thought I better pay a visit. The staff person made the change on the record but suggested I save the $25 for the new enhanced license and just keep the old one until it expired.

Surprisingly, Chase.

No annual fee for our Sapphire credit cards, plus one percent back on everything. Most importantly, every time I've had to call a human answered within the third ring. On each of the few times I've had to contest a charge, our account was immediately credited the disputed amount and we never heard from Chase or the disputed merchant again.

Plus, it's the best looking card out there. :beer

REI, Amazon, Costco, TMobile and USAA.

What is really interesting about this list is that the following companies which have been mentioned a few time: REI, Amazon, Costco, TMobile, Nordstrom, Alaska Air are all based in Seattle. Seems like a higher than average concentration.

Starbucks is also based there, and they have always treated me well, but for some reason they did not come to mind when I thought of my answer to the question.

I had a surprisingly good experience with the customer service of Coinstar recently.

Amazon as noted by others.
