I just made the jump and bought an ipad. And, with that, comes the world of apps. I would like to poll the forum: Which apps have you found to be the most essential, useful, fun, and/or innovative? I'm looking for both financial and non-financial suggestions.

+1,000 for DropBox

It makes it so easy to get .pdfs and other documents onto the iPad for later viewing. Also, you can 'star' specific items so they'll download and be available when you're not connected to the internet (and will help with space issues).

YouTube - the latest version is great.
Kindle - if you're in the amazon ecosystem with books
Audible - if you purchase audiobooks through them, they have a recently revamped app that is great. Unfortunately, you cannot purchase the audiobooks through the app, but you can download and listen to any previously purchased books and I believe you can search for books.
Mint - so-so app but is very convenient.

Enjoy the iPad, it can be a really useful tool or a cool toy.

Are there any good portfolio analysis apps (better/more accurate than vanguards)? Wouldn't mind paying a few dollars for a good one.

Orchestra - A cross platform "To Do" app (I use it on my laptop and iPad)
Evernote - For saving snippets of text from a website, URLs, or manually created notes (easy to tag or group by folders - easy to search)
Dropbox - Cloud storage with local storage of favorites
TouchBlur - A little app to blur selected parts of an image (e.g., account number)
Chrome - A better browser and easy to share bookmarks from other computers (too bad you can't change the default from Safari)

Both of these allow easy transfer between ipad and various machines.
I use Evernote to record "universal" bookmarks too.

Evernote - I save everything to Evernote, articles, fund statements, prospectuses, receipts, EN syncs nicely across devices
Kindle - much better selection than Apple's iBooks IMO. Syncs perfectly with my iPhone
Flipboard - I use Flipboard to broaden my horizons and view articles that I wouldn't normally see in my Twitter feed
Tweetbot - I don't tweet, but I use Twitter to follow some areas of interest and for quick news snippets, sort of like an RSS feed
Numbers - I have a few things I track using spreadsheets, and it syncs nicely with my iPhone so I have constant access
Vanguard's app - it's not perfect but it's getting better
Safari - built in app, used mostly to access the Bogleheads forum
Downcast - a podcast app. I enjoy TED talks and a few other podcasts

One I haven't seen mentioned yet is Slideshark. It's the best app for saving and presenting PowerPoint slides that I have found. It saves your presentations in the cloud and locally. It lets you annotate slides as you present and also has a "laser pointer" feature. Really great app.

I just purchased a B&N Nook HD+ which is a 9" tablet running Android Ice Cream Sandwich with a B&N skin. Could not resist the lower price of $149 for 16GB, $179 for 32GB. My wife has a paperwhite Kindle and she mentioned to my son she would like a gift certificate for e-books. He gave her a B&N gift certificate rather than an Amazon one. Used the gift certificate toward the Nook HD+. So far I am impressed, B&N has opened up access to Google Play. Nook HD+ has no camera but has micro SD card slot for up to 64GB. I added a 32GB card for additional storage. Many Google Play apps are not supported but Google Play will tell you that before you download. Default browser is Chrome. Kindle app works with all Amazon e-book purchases. I still have a week and a half to return it but so far it is a keeper.

Have been using an Ipad for past few months. But one of my pet peaves is not being able to create a hyperlink within an email. Am I missing something obvious?

Why not just copy the link from the browser and paste into your mail message?

If you don't know how to do that...

1. Press and hold in the URL box in the browser (Safari or Chrome)
2. Wait for a small menu to pop up. It should say Select | Select All | Paste
3. Choose Select All
4. Now you should see a menu that says Cut | Copy | Paste | Define
5. Choose Copy. Your link is now copied.
6. Press and hold in your email message.
7. Wait for the menu to pop up. It should say Select | Select All | Paste
8. Choose Paste. Now your link is in your email message.

Hope this helps.

Yes, I can copy and paste the text of the link, but it does not result in hyperlink format.

The recipient will need to re-copy and re-paste link into the browser address field. It is not a "touchable" hyperlink.

That's strange. I just copied and pasted a link into an email and sent it to myself. I was able to touch on the link and go to the page. I am using an iPhone 5 with iOS 7.

I did google the issue and saw that others are having the same problem. What model iPad and what version of iOS are you using?
