Good movies to stream on Netflix

Post by sunnyday » Thu Jan 17, 2013 5:02 pm

I signed up for Netflix streaming but have been pretty disappointed with the movie selection and am likely going to cancel. What are your recommendations to stream? I'm interested in any genre except tv shows

Having just done a little of this myself, here's what I enjoyed from the streaming selection. I mostly use it for TV shows and documentaries.

Documentaries:
Exit through the Gift Shop
Restrepo
Man on Wire
Winnebago Man
Dear Zachary
Running the Sahara
For the Bible Tells me so

Funny:
A Good Old Fashioned Orgy
I love you Phillip Morris

Action:
Coriolanus
True Grit (Coen Brothers)
IP Man
13 Assassins
The Devils Double

Twisted:
Red State (great movie though)

And I know you don't want TV but Breaking Bad is amazing.

We just started it last month.

(Edit - Oops missed you didn't want TV)
Try TV series... I really liked Breaking Bad, and Life on Mars.

The movie Limitless was good.

On a related topic, is there anyway to browse the entire list? They keep recommending me stuff, but I can't just say "Show me everything you got", at least by genre or sub-genre.

Not interested in TV shows? Breaking Bad is an absolutely amazing show. You should watch it. Don't pass up the chance to watch this amazing show by streaming "The Fox and the Hound Part 2: Hiding Under The Staircase" ;)

Isn't that rather subjective???

OK, two popped into my head:

Hogfather - set on a parallel world that sits on top of a giant turtle flying through space. Discworld has its own version of Christmas except it's call Hogwatch. In the movie, Santa Claus has been disabled as part of a grand scheme to destroy reality, leaving Death to stand in for Santa while his granddaughter attempts to avert disaster.

Kung Fu Hustle - the axe gang moves into a poor neighborhood only to discovered that it is filled with top notch Martial Artist in hiding. Movie plays homage to the different ku fu movies over the years.

well you did ask

I normally don't watch those kinds of shows (more into history documentaries, sci-fi, etc.), but I loved Breaking Bad.

This is in the same universe. I liked it better than Hogfather. I saw Netflix has it.

We use Netflix mostly for watching TV series. But when I'm looking for a movie, http://instantwatcher.com is a good site for exploring the Netflix catalog by category, critics' picks, etc.

We tried it for six months and never found anything worth watching. I canceled it.

I know you said "no TV", but Breaking Bad, The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret , TED Talks: Smart Laughs, and Wilfred are much better than standard TV fare, and I found the first two seasons of 30 Rock to be pretty imaginative.

As for movie streaming, try Swimming with Sharks (a close-to-real black comedy based on an actual agent here in LA), Jackie Brown, Snatch, and Color Me Kubrick

'Helvetica'. You wouldn't think a documentary about a font would be interesting, but it really is good.

No TV? Then you're missing out on THE LEAGUE

I remember there being more good looking movies than I had time to watch when I had Netflix. I was thinking about getting it again soon too.

How are you accessing it? From the website, the top navbar has "Watch Instantly" that has a bunch of categories inside there.

Action & Adventure

And on that page, it gives options for subgenres and sorting by suggested for you, highest rated, year released, maturity, a-z, z-a.

I have almost never been disappointed by Netflix recommendations. The system is very good at recommending what you would like if you rate a high number of movies/tv shows.
I wish their instant streaming was better though.

Some of Disney's older catalog is already available. I recently watched The Great Mouse Detective. But then I'm a sucker for anything with Vincent Price in it.

Not everyone is going to like this one, but I found Last Dance absolutely fascinating. It's about a collaboration Maurice Sendak did with the dance company Pilobolus. Yes, that Maurice Sendak.

Exactly, any movie not in English. I liked the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo trilogy, the not in English versions with Michael Nyqvist and Noomi Rapace, and almost anything Bollywood, but I have no idea what's on now because I dropped it last year when they ran out of non-kung fu movies in Mandarin that I hadn't seen.

"Good" movies are totally in the eye of the beholder. Spend some time filling out your likes/dislikes on netflix. Also, go ahead and rate as many movies as you can on their site. The more you do that, the better they can recommend something for you. With over 50,000 streaming titles, there is plenty for you to watch.

I just watched a documentary this week called "craigslist joe." I enjoyed it.

It's not a movie but a series called Prison Break. There are 80 episodes spanning 4 seasons. I'm addicted. Without spoiling the plot, it's about 2 brothers; one has been sentenced to death for a crime he did not commit, and the other devises an elaborate plan to help his brother escape .

We use it quite a bit since there are a lot of decent kid offerings (and no commercials).

Also, like documentaries and historical stuff - the $7.99 for junk found on netflix is cheaper than paying full price for junk on cable.

So I'll miss about one year of tv programming (some of it). I'm already over it.

I agree that this is the best approach. I'm never bored with Netflix around. Netflix Instant leaves a lot to be desired if you're the type who has a very specific movie in mind to watch, but if you have an open mind and Netflix knows what you like, you'll constantly be surprised at the great stuff you find, even if you end up watching more documentaries than you ever thought possible.

One random doc I enjoyed recently was the "Pruitt Igoe Myth" about the eponymous public housing project in St Louis, which Netflix gave nearly 5 stars for me. I do have an odd fascination with urban planning, but I'm unsure how Netflix would surmise this from my viewing history. :)

"The IT Crowd" is hilarious.......Especially the Episode " gay! A gay musical"... But you gotta know the characters on the show first so don't just skip to this one and NO they are not making fun of gay musicals....almost died laughing....I start laughing even if I think about the episode for too long.....

The only reason I would rejoin Netflix is if they had a bunch of new season's of IT Crowd.* For any Doc Martin fans, Jen is Katherine Parkinson, aka Pauline.

Alas, it is not to be.
Although a fifth series was commissioned, Graham Linehan announced in 2011 that there would not be a fifth series.
I guess that makes my netflix decision easy.
