Anyone using the Amazon Prime membership ?
If so, how would you describe your experience and do you think it's worth the $75 a year ?

Re: Is Amazon Prime worth $75 a year ?
I have watched a lot of documentaries and some movies. The items where I could get free shipping has been very helpful. It is well worth the $79 to me.

Yes - for me primarily for the free 2-day shipping but the movies are a plus.
Re: Is Amazon Prime worth $75 a year ?
I think I've made back the $75 just in the last month, and we don't use the Instant Video at all (because my spouse is hearing impaired).

I like free Amazon Prime; it's not the full deal, but you do get free 2 day shipping. The catch is that you need a friend who learned about sharing in pre-school.

Re: Is Amazon Prime worth $75 a year ?
The great thing about Amazon Prime that many people don't know about is the "owner" of the Prime account can grant Prime shipping status to up to 4 "family members and coworkers" for no charge. This grants those 4 people the ability to get free 2 day shipping on all purchases with their own seperate Amazon account.
I have been able to convince 4 family members and friends to each give me $15 per year (approx. $79/5) for this. They don't get the video streaming or free kindle books that the main account holder does, but most people just want the shipping anyway and it's definitely worth $15 per year. The end result is that I only pay $19 per year for Prime and I get all the benefits.

Re: Is Amazon Prime worth $75 a year ?
For me the shipping is worth it. If I need an HDMI cable, I order it for $3, and it shows up on my doorstep in two days.
Ever since the citizens of my lovely city voted to raise the sales tax, I try to buy as much as possible on-line. Buying on-line also cuts down on my driving and time spent shopping. For me, it is very efficient to use a Prime membership. We probably have over 100 orders per year.

Maybe I was too subtle. I get free Amazon Prime because my family member doesn't charge me $15 for sharing. I've done the one-month free trial 4 times. You can cancel immediately after starting the trial & still use the entire month. There's typically a delay of about a year before they offer the free trial again. I normally use the trials around Christmas.
The rest of the time, free super saver shipping is fast enough for me.

When you share it with 4 "family" members its worth $20.
Prime members under a free trial or paid subscription can share their shipping benefits with up to 4 additional family members living in the same household, or up to 4 coworkers to shop for the related account

I've never heard of a city use tax. How would you even pay that? How would they enforce it? Would you go by the city you were in when you placed the order, or the city it was shipped to, or the city the box was opened in, or the city the item was first used in, or the city the item was most frequently used in? I'm thinking that dog won't hunt.rkhusky wrote:So, your city/state does not have a use tax?
Since he was referring specifically to his city and not state, I'm sure he complies with state use tax to the same extent that everyone else does.

A Colorado government web page has this information:SSSS wrote:I've never heard of a city use tax. How would you even pay that? How would they enforce it? It also had this interesting tidbit:Local City and County Use Tax
All other state-collected cities and counties in Colorado collect their own use tax, when applicable, on building material and/or motor vehicle purchases. Home-rule cities that collect their own local sales taxes should be contacted directly for their tax laws and regulations. For more information on state-collected local jurisdictions and/or which cities administer their own taxes and how they may be contacted, please see the DR 1002, “Sales/Use Tax Rates”.
Other states may have something similar.Retailers that do not collect Colorado sales tax are now required to notify Colorado purchasers that the State of Colorado requires the purchaser to file a use tax return. Retailers must send notification to all Colorado purchasers by January 31 of each year showing the total amount purchased from the retailer in the previous calendar year if their purchases were more than $500.
Retailers must report all purchase information annually to the Department of Revenue (including purchases of under $500). The new law exempts retailers from these requirements if their annual gross sales in Colorado are less than $100,000.
Enforcement of this law is currently suspended pursuant to a preliminary injunction issued by the federal district court for the District of Colorado.

Re: Is Amazon Prime worth $75 a year ?
I absolutely love Amazon Prime. I've paid for it for a few years now. I cancelled Netflix last year when I realized that most of the things I watched on Netflix were available on Prime...plus, Amazon gives the ability to rent movies that aren't available through Prime, which is very nice.
I probably buy too much stuff because of the free shipping, but it's all stuff I want & use, so wtf, right?

Re: Is Amazon Prime worth $75 a year ?
Yes, it is worth it. Convenience and cost. Often times the 2 day shipping is sufficient for items I would otherwise go to a big box store for. I just saved 25 $ on a faucet for example.

Re: Is Amazon Prime worth $75 a year ?
Amazon Prime is well worth the cost IMO. The free (included in Prime anyway) two day shipping alone makes it worthwhile for me especially if you purchase anything that has weight to it which I did last year when I bought a table and two stools. I also borrow that one book a month through my Kindle which is included with the Prime membership.
Not that it has anything to do with Prime membership but I generally look at the "deals of the day" for good buys. I already have four presents set aside for next Christmas.

Re: Is Amazon Prime worth $75 a year ?
I bought it because I was doing some home improvement and I wanted my purchases quickly. The video was another consideration. However, it was not really a good deal. My purchases, for the most part, were > $25 so I would get the 2 day shipping anyway. The selection on Instant video is not too great. If they changed their iPhone app for work on cellular, instead of insisting on WiFi, then perhaps it would be worth it.
It is probably worth it for Kindle users since you can borrow certain books for free.

Since I am in Amazon's HQ state - I get the privilege of paying sales tax - so it is usually cheaper to buy somewhere else online.
Plus, on most things, I can usually find a price cheaper than Amazon, even when shipping is added in. And, I am not in a hurry, so 2 day shipping isn't a huge selling point for me.

Re: Is Amazon Prime worth $75 a year ?
I've noticed that Amazon's prices no longer are the lowest around. For instance, I found that synthetic motor oil was ~$15 cheaper at Costco than Amazon, for the same brand and weight. For things like computer components, Newegg is consistently cheaper than Amazon, and since California now forces Amazon to collect sales tax at the time of sale, there isn't even that 'discount'.leonard wrote:Since I am in Amazon's HQ state - I get the privilege of paying sales tax - so it is usually cheaper to buy somewhere else online.

And if I use the free > $25 shipping, I've noticed that my items are often 'shipping soon' for about a week. Then they finally ship and are in transit for only a day or two. This just serves to make me less enthusiastic about shopping with Amazon than I was in the past.

Long term prime user and I say it is definitely worth it. We buy a lot of stuff from Amazon, usually to avoid the time and hassle of going to a local store.
However, do note that prime prices are different than regular prices (usually only by a few cents). Amazon openly admits that they occasionally set the price higher for prime members.

Worth $75 a year?
A definite YES for me.
I made back that much in less than 2 months (maybe even 1 month) due to amounts I saved due to no shipping or tax costs.

+1. I recently got Amazon Prime shipping benefits via a family member's Amazon Prime account. I've used it a couple of times already; it was a nice convenience. That said, for me personally I don't feel the need for Amazon Prime and thus would not spring for the $79, nor would I be likely to split the cost with someone. But I do appreciate getting the free ride via a family member.sscritic wrote:Maybe I was too subtle. I get free Amazon Prime because my family member doesn't charge me $15 for sharing. I haven't noted any cases where I was charged more for a product because I was a Prime member.
What I have noticed is that some products are available to me at one price on Amazon Prime and at a lower price not on Amazon Prime (with a shipping fee) - My choice.

I spend about $5 per month for the cheapest NETFLIX plan. That's $60/yr. Are there enough Amazon movies to replace Netflix?
Re: Is Amazon Prime worth $75 a year ?
I have been paying for prime since the inception for the two day free shipping, so I was happy with the videos, and now with the kindle owner's library, it is definitely worth it..
Re: Is Amazon Prime worth $75 a year ?
I definitely think it is worth it. Considering I pay $7.99 a month for Netflix the $75 I pay for Amazon Prime is like getting Netflix for free. Lately I think Amazon Prime Instant Video has been better than Netflix, plus I shop on Amazon quite often and I save money on shipping. It more than pays for itself.

It's worth it for me. We do 75% of our Christmas shopping on Amazon. The money saved in shipping more than covers the cost for the entire year.
Re: Is Amazon Prime worth $75 a year ?
100% worth it for me. I buy everything on amazon (or at least price check it there first). The 2 day free shipping is just awesome. I recouped my cost during holiday season alone...
Re: Is Amazon Prime worth $75 a year ?
I just looked at the Amazon site and didn't find much info. They apparently want you to get info by using the "free trial".
I'm interested in the recency of movies available from Amazon Prime. A comparison to Blockbuster or to Netflix might be helpful.
I've always assumed Amazon prime was a way for them to make money, not me. But it seems many people here have been very satisfied, so maybe it's worth a look after all.

Never used the movie viewing benefits, but the shipping plan has been worth it to me. Without the plan, I can get free delivery by waiting long enough, but with free 2 day shipping, items that I want to buy pretty much now I can use amazon to find the exactly right item at a good price instead of driving all over town. Two days is a lot longer than pick it up from a retailers shelf, but it is not so long that I feel like I have to accept lower selection and higher prices from local retailers. It allows me to use the benefits of Amazon's selection and pricing much more.

Another benefit is that if you need next day shipping, you get it for another $3.99. The other day I needed a hard to find plumbing part which they had in-stock. They even offered same day shipping for $3.99 and I got the part that afternoon! In fact, many of my orders come next day.

No, the person who pays for the prime account has the option to basically designate prime status to 4 other amazon accounts. You just have to have the email address associated to those 4 accounts and there's a page where you list them and then poof, they have Prime. They own and maintain their own accounts and nothing is shared between theirs and yours (such as shipping address, payment methods, etc.)Jerilynn wrote:Thanks.SSSS wrote:https://www.amazon.com/gp/subs/primeclu ... epage.htmlJerilynn wrote:What is the step by step procedure to 'grant Prime shipping status to up to 4 "family members and coworkers" for no charge'?

Re: Is Amazon Prime worth $75 a year ?
The price went up so its not $75 anymore. it is around $89 but still worth every penny. My time is extremely valuable and if I can buy something on Amazon (which is usually cheaper) than to haul me and my entire family to Walmart / Target and waste an hour?
The prime movies are just icing on the cake. Keep in mind the free movie selection included with prime is not great. There are notable TV series such as 24 and Lost. Otherwise, very subpar.
For those who claim they get it for 'free', it is clearly defined as same household. Not co workers, religious brothers, but household. $75 is not a lot of money. Would you walk out of bestbuy with a $89 MP3 player?

To be fair, from what I've been told, the coworkers part was recently added.Prime members under a free trial or paid subscription can share their shipping benefits with up to 4 additional family members living in the same household, or up to 4 coworkers to shop for the related account. Other Prime membership benefits such as Prime instant video and the Kindle Owners' Lending Library can't be shared.
Re: Is Amazon Prime worth $75 a year ?
I am thinking of getting Amazon Prime as well, for the movie and show availability. How would you compare it to Netflix and Hulu Plus streaming options? (Both are $8 per month/ $96 per year).
