Recommend a vehicle similar to the Acura MDX

Post by InvestoGuy » Tue Jan 15, 2013 11:19 am

I have zeroed in on an Acura MDX as a potential next vehicle, however, I am realizing the 2009/2010 models have very poor mileage (15/20).
We are interested in a similar sized SUV, but with a better mileage. What other vehicles should I consider? The RDX and Lexus RX 300 is a tad small and anything bigger than the MDX is too big.
Any other vehicles similar to the MDX is size, but better in mileage?
Thanks.

check out Audi Q7 (diesel), BMW X5, Volvo VC90, MBenz ML but all will likely be pricier.

If you can "stoop down" to non-luxury brands consider: Mazda CX-9 (mileage NOT better though), Hyundai SantaFe (new version), Ford Flex (with Ecoboost engine), Buick Enclave or GMC Acadia.

overall though i don't think you'll get much better mileage in this class of vehicle without shelling out bucks for hybrid/diesel.

I just got a GMC Acadia. So far I love it. It's rated 16/23, but that might be optimistic. It's a bit less expensive than an MDX and IMO, unless you are driving more than 20K a year, the fuel costs to drop down to a 5 seater aren't worth it. You really need to go Escape hybrid or the like to justify it, IMO.

I don't know the lineage on the Cadillac SRX, but it's a very nice SUV. The Cue system in the 2013 models is very cool.

the older Honda Pilot share the same parts the MDX, not sure about the newer model.
similar models would be Pilot, Highlander, Santa Fe, Edge although these are not the same "tricked-out" class as the Acura

You can't go wrong with a Honda Pilot or Toyota Highlander. You can always opt for the top of the line model if you want more luxury.

Good Luck!

I had a 2009 Toyota Highlander sport. It was BIG. If I drove carefully on the highway, I could get 26. Normally I averaged 20-23.

If you really like the MDX, I'd wait for the 2014 Acura MDX that is coming out this summer. It is a complete redesign and gas mileage will improve over the current version. You will also get an improved interior and exterior:

If you don't want to spend that much, check out the '13 new redesign of the Nissan Pathfinder. It has 3 rows and is a family-friendly vehicle.

If you want to wait until this fall, the new redesign of the Toyota Highlander will be out.
