I may go see The Who in a couple of months. So excited - definitely on my top 5 all time.

The Velvet Underground. It's been said they only sold 10000 albums, but every person who bought one went out and formed a band.

Is it a valid financial choice to spend $75 to go see The Who in a couple of months?sscritic wrote:Consumer Issue: What underrated band's CDs would you buy?

On the one hand... It'd be a great experience to have and to look back on!
On the other hand... I'm relatively young (24) and that $75 invested in a Roth IRA with an 8% annual return would compound to ~2,394 tax-free dollars over 45 years.

To add fuel to the financial aspect, the advantage to being fans of an under-rated band is that they charge less for concert appearances at smaller venues...

Good call on Rush.
Didn't I just watch Roger Daltrey & Pete Townshend perform at the London Olympics Opening Ceremony? So much for that early-80s farewell tour. Just so much music talent in the UK in the 60s, it was easy to get overshadowed by The Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Eric Burdon/Animals and Badfinger are other bands that didn't get the notoriety they deserved.
Boston's issues were (in part) self-inflicted. After a while, fans & media quit paying attention if new material isn't released. Sad that so many groups have issues with record companies. But their self-titled first commercially-released album was one of the top 3 debuts ever IMO.

Re: Most underrated band of all time?
Well, I agree with millions of fans that the Who was (is?) the greatest rock 'n roll band ever, so I don't think they're under-rated. The Stones have claimed that moniker, but the true rockers know it's the Who
I agree that Rush was under-rated, though their fans were rabid.
+1 for Little Feat and Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys.
Current most under-rated band- The Time Jumpers, here in Nashville.

I would say that The Kinks have been somewhat underappreciated. One of the reasons is because they were banned from touring the U.S. in their early days.

Anyone for Ten Years After?
I'm trying to come up with bands that weren't necessarily popular, but were just plain genius. For example, Queen was one of the most influential bands in the '70's - but they weren't underrated.

I'd cast my vote for Genesis, songs were too long for radio play.

LadyGeek, I hate to disagree with a moderator, but a Ten Years After concert is still one of the most boring experiences of my then-young life. Maybe Mr. Lee was having an off night, but the best i can say is that the hyperactive and inane solos had a style of their own.

Not sure how you define underrated, but I can't think how Rush would qualify unless it's because they've never been nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Dire Straits is another great band that received a lot of recognition, but perhaps deserved even a bit more.
How about
Soundgarden
Violent Femmes

Wait... what?!? Every single one of those bands is rated very, very highly in my perception.JDaniels wrote: Our top three were:

I agree that the Who is underrated compared to the Stones (in my book, the Who is a far superior band... yeah, I said it), but overall, I think they're held in extremely high esteem by just about anyone who knows music.
Although maybe I have a bit of skewed perspective because A) I went to music school, and B) I now live in Nashville. I sort of take for granted that people are well-informed about music. I haven't been able to throw a rock without hitting a musician in 25 years.
Still, pretty much every drummer I know can play Neil Peart fills by heart, and all the bass players worship Geddy Lee. And Boston? I mean, wow... both guitarists and audio engineers wish they could pull of the stuff Tom Sholtz did.
So, you want really underrated? I submit two worthy candidates:
Jack Jones. At his peak, he fell under the long shadows cast by the likes of Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett. Embarrassingly dated hits like "Wives and Lovers" didn't help with his timelessness. Not to mention the "Love Boat" theme. But really, the guy was--and is (he still performs and is in fine voice)--a talented interpreter of the great American songbook, and he deserves far more recognition than he currently seems to have. Examples: Our Song... I Will Wait For You... What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?
a-ha. That's right, the Norwegian synth-pop band who had an enormous hit with 1984's "Take On Me", and followed it up with... well, not much. A couple of follow-up singles didn't really chart well in the US and that was about it over here. They were swept into the dustbin of '80's synthpop history along with Flock of Seagulls, Peter Schilling, and Gary Numan. Which is a shame, because in Europe they continued to do very, very well and released several solid albums for 25 years before finally breaking up in 2010. Examples: Foot of the Mountain... Angel in the Snow... Lifelines

I listen to what I like, so I have no idea if they are underrated or not. I listen to the James Brown Band. They have a good vocalist.
P.S. And I have bought their records and paid to attend their performances. That's my personal consumer consumption.

Walter Trout has been playing his Fender Stratocaster for over 30 years as a sideman and with his own band. We saw him perform this last July in Northern California. He coaxes some amazing sounds out of his guitar. He may be more popular in Europe than in the US

In the U.S., The Corrs are very underrated. They achieved top success in Europe, Australia and other continents, but something less than that in the U.S.
Also Chuck Berry. So many musicians cite him as a major influence, including the Beatles.

This whole question is complicated by the fact that some entire genres (e.g., jazz) are underrated compared to others (e.g., rock). So I would say that if the question concerns underrated bands across the musical spectrum, no rock band can qualify.
So, some better candidates (of those I regularly listen to):
