How often do you check how the stock market is performing?

Post by OkieIndexer » Mon Mar 19, 2012 10:10 am

I find myself checking to see how the stock market indexes are doing a lot (thanks to the Internet), and I was curious how often others check on the stock market?

I look, but I don't do anything. I just like to think about how much my net worth will increase as of the time Vanguard releases the NAVs of their funds. However, I don't like to think about how much my net worth will decrease as of the time Vanguard releases the NAVs of their funds. I also check because it gives me a break from posting on bogleheads.

4+, for me. I used not to keep track of the market at all, but now I'm retired, I have time for such hobbies. I don't trade securities at all, but I think it's amusing to see how much my portfolio is gaining or losing.

At work, I check what's going on in passing a bunch of times each day - but don't react to it unless it rebalacing comes into the equation.

When nothing much is going on, a few times a month. When some posting in Bogleheads draws my attention to it, I look. When there's some excitement in progress, I may look once a day but I try not to. When I accidentally catch part of a news report and the announce, infuriatingly, says only that "the Dow was up 82 points today" without saying from what or to what, then, yeah, the next time I get to a computer I'll look to see what it was.

Last time I check was sometime last week, when the Dow was back below 13,000 again.

As long as the numbers before the comma don't change, I don't feel I need to know anything more.

Why do you ask, is something happening? (Darn! Made me look).

Into the 13's again, I see. Absolutely honestly, no kidding: I didn't know when I started the reply.

I think I was a better investor when the only financial performance information I looked at was postal-service paper mailed quarterly statements.

I check 2-3 times a day, out of curiosity. Whether it is up or down, I take no action unless I am close to my rebalance bands. The S&P500 is up .18%. I guess that means I only have 2 "checks" left for today. :) :)

Once/day.

There are times when I'd rather limit it to once/week, but reading the news daily (which is a habit I'm not going to stop) makes that impossible. I do try to avoid browsing news sites when the US market is open.

I put down once a month but in actuality I do not really "check" on purpose. I watch the evening news and by happenstance they show what the DOW and S&P500 have done lately. Therefore my answer could have been 3 or less a year I suppose that I actually check on purpose.

Yeah, that drives me crazy, too. From the NPR website:
Stock market indexes help newscasters "hit the post," or finish speaking at exactly the right second. For example, some newscasts begin at one minute after the hour. Three minutes later they break so local stations can air their own newscasts (many stations continue with the NPR newscasts, however). The timing must be exact or the newscaster will either be cut off abruptly or speak over the local announcers.
I check the stock indexes and bond prices at least once a day, and if there is a largish move in any of them, try to guess what the balance in my Vanguard account will be the next morning. I'm so often wrong that it really quells any impulse to fiddle with things, since obviously I can't even predict the past.

Can't help but catch it on the nightly, national news. But, sometimes, not even that often, if I linger at the refrigerator too long and return well past the ending for the Viagra, Prep H, Cialis, Prolia, etc., ads :D

Anyway, much more interested in the portfolio's overall size than the market's daily gyrations.

Who needs to check? I just stick my index finger into the air.

I'd prefer to seal myself off from that info but pop culture doesn't agree. THE MARKET IS UP! THE MARKET IS DOWN! THE MARKET IS STAGNANT!

Probably 2-4 times a week by seeing it online or hearing about it on evening news. But it's not exactly a deliberate check since I often don't think about it unless it pops up on a screen. Obviously, if something big is going on - a flash crash, crisis, etc.,) I'll check into that. I often wonder if my seeming indifference results from many years of investing (numbness? boredom?) or just being a content indexer (wisdom at last?) - or both.

Who waits for the markets to open!? I look at Futures and overseas as well.

But the key is it is just a fun little distraction. I never take action based on it. That is planned out weeks or even years into the future by a strict set of rules.

I check on my smart phone when I am out so people think I am important. ;)

2-3 times per month. Until recently it was a lot more. I had a financial site saved as a Favorite on my computer, which I would use prehaps daily. I was doing some housekeeping and deleted it just today. I doubt I will miss it. I still won't be able to stop my partner from constantly checking his iPhone and yelling from the next office to inform me of every market movement.

Marketwatch.com is one of my permanent financial tabs on both of my PCs.
I check it to see if what's happening agrees with my predictions.

Sometimes a couple of times a day I'll click on the tab on my iPhone that checks things. Sometimes less often. Mostly it's just for entertainment. Lately I've been watching bond rates more than stocks. I can't wait for rates to rise.

So, I see it every time when I use my computer.
Plus it is on the radio (Marketplace and NPR) everyday.

I check often and you all should be glad that I do because it is only my checking that is forcing things up to hit my rebalancing band and of course at the same time your rebalancing band.

I have a real-time feed. While a vast majority of my money is in index funds and won't be touched other than for rebalancing, I day trade with a tiny fraction of my invested assets.

I have a spreadsheet with ETFs that either I own or that represent mutual funds that I own (use the GoogleFinance function to pull the prices and % change). I usually check at least once each day, just in case there's a huge drop that might trigger a rebalance. Sometimes I forget, especially when I'm busy posting here. Things haven't been so volatile lately, so I've become a bit lazy about it.

I listen to news radio when in my car, they give the stock report twice per hour. If on a computer, I have a portfolio setup in yahoo finance with ETFs that track my actual portfolio so I can see at a glance how things are going. Rarely do any transactions, maybe some rebalancing on a RBD. Voted 4+.

I constantly see the S&P 500 & Dow numbers on my browser home page, but generally it doesn't register in my mind - and I'm often a bit surprised when it's moved by a few percent vs the last time I really thought about it.

A couple of times a week when I notice it on the NY Times homepage.

Of course, depending on the time of day sometimes it's showing the Japanese or European markets -- I then wonder whether Japan/Europe is reacting to something already reflected in the US, whether the US is still to react, or whether it's unrelated. Doesn't hold my interest long enough for me to follow up with the US markets later though.

As Bogleheads are not, as a group, market timers or day traders I was real surprised at the percentage of members who check four or more times a day. I understand why it is on the news all the time. With 24/7 news they have to have something to say all day, every day. I guess it's kind of like checking the score of the ball game but to me it's mostly noise.

75% check the market at least once per day. That's higher than I would have expected. But it's also a testament to the Boglehead philosophy. I sense that most Bogleheads can check the market frequently and not panic during the tough times.

I'm one of the many who check a few times per day, but take no action. It's easy to avoid taking action, as I really like the disciplined approach of "buy, hold and rebalance". I think the habit of checking regularly dates back to pre-Boglehead days.

I've been checking multiple times per day in recent months, but my interest ebbs and flows over the years. I recently realized that you can call real-time Google Finance quotes from Google Spreadsheet cells, so I re-purposed my rebalancing spreadsheet to roughly track my portfolio value in real-time based on ETF equivalents. :)

Then again, it's all just for kicks, like tracking the daily ups and downs of a favorite sports team. I haven't veered from my investment plan since I set it up 8 years ago.

I want to buy in rough times; that's why I check.

However, I have to admit that during the worst of 2008/2009, I restricted myself to checking once per week, since daily checking was just too emotionally draining. I even tried to make sure I didn't even hear any news about the market except during my weekly check on Friday (which usually resulted in buying, though it was scary).

Interesting poll results. I thought maybe I was checking too often and needed to cut it down some. (After all, how often do I check my savings account interest rate, maybe 3 times a year?) But it looks like "once a day or less" is in the minority.

Do you think checking on the market too often can be a bad thing?

I definitely cut down my trading and checking ever since I became a Boglehead. Some times I don't even bother looking. So glad I found this site so I don't waste and more time and money trying but failing to beat the market.
