BOGLEHEADS X--THE BEST!
BOGLEHEADS X—THE BEST EVER!
Good Morning, my Friends,
Bounteous thanks to all of you for making Bogleheads X such a wonderful experience. It was a real treat to have the opportunity to talk to your group at such length (you have remarkable patience and endurance!), and I especially enjoyed the casual individual visits with so many of you around the podium, at lunch, and at the book signing. As always, it was a thrill to do the traditional Fireside Chat with Dr. Bill Bernstein, the splendid author and intelligent investor who remains one of my heroes.
I was particularly delighted with the wonderful reception Vanguard gave you at the Thursday evening seminar on our campus. Of course the panelists—all of whom (save one) I’ve known for a long time—were well informed and articulate, and did a great job. The addition of the various Information Booths was a great idea, which you all seemed to enjoy; what’s more, it gave me the opportunity to meet many of our impressive new leaders who have risen through the ranks beginning back in my tenure. The handsome program looked like a fine keepsake, and the choice of those delicious Philly cheesesteaks for hors d’oeurves was little short of inspired.
Thanks to the Boglehead leaders who made the affair run so smoothly, and especially to Mel Lindauer as emcee. The LOVE statue—a model of the Philadelphia landmark sculpture by Robert Indiana—is, as I promised, already reposing on the mantlepiece in my den at home. Now there’s a message from you all that is delightfully unmistakable.
I’m already looking forward to seeing you again at Bogleheads XI a year or so hence. And I like to think that investment wise Taylor and the lovely Pat may be able again to join us. Their message to open our sessions this year set a warm and wonderful tone for our gathering, and who’s really to be sure that they won’t be here in person in 2012?
A lot will happen in the coming twelve months. It’s a perilous world out there, so get your asset allocation right—for you—and then just Stay the Course.
Best. always. JACK
P.S. ‘Tis said (sort of) that “appreciation delayed is appreciation denied.” So I apologize for the tardiness of this note. I tried to send it Sunday afternoon, but, as you know, the site was closed for repairs.

It was an honor and a pleasure to meet you in person, Mr. Bogle.
Thank you for everything.

Hi Jack,
Thank you for your inspiration and for going the extra mile. I enjoyed your presence at # 10. I will see you at # 11. As you always say, "press on regardless"

Jack,
This having been my first Bogleheads Reunion, I've got to say that it surpassed my tremendous anticipation. I echo Mike above in that it was truly an honor and a privilege to have shaken your hand (that's Texan for having met you in person). My two greatest impressions of the event were meeting and talking to the attendees and the feeling - reinforced by the Vanguard panel - of comfort in knowing that I've entrusted my retirement assets to the right people. Thank you once again for all you have done and continue to do for us (the little guys). May you enjoy good health and good fortune until we meet again.

Jack,
I didn't attend Bogleheads X, but I did watch your interview with Christine Benz. You have been a tremendous source of knowledge and inspiration for me.
Thank you, and best wishes,
Howard

Yes, thanks Mr. Bogle! I too did not make the reunion but hope to next year.

Mr. Bogle - I haven't had the chance to attend any of the reunions yet (although maybe I'll be able to next year!), but I just wanted to thank you for everything you have done for us small investors. And it's an honor that you post on the forum from time to time - it really makes me proud to be part of such a great group.
Thank you!!
Thank you!!

One of these years I will officially meet you after seeing you at the L.A. Times Investment conference in 1999 and talking with you on the phone via Bob Brinker's radio show.

Jack,
Few people ever get to meet their hero. I am fortunate enough to have had several meetings with you now. Thank you for being so generous with your time.

It was good seeing you again at BH 10, Allan. And you were a great addition to our Q&A with the Experts Panel this year. Looking forward to having you on the Panel again next year.Allan Roth wrote:Jack,

This was my 2nd convention. I most thoroughly enjoyed talking with everyone and giving the wiki presentation. I'm already looking forward to next year.
What impressed me was seeing and hearing the discussions in person. Certainly, you can read this material online or in a book. But, you miss the personal interactions, e.g. the tone of the response, or body language that help bring the point across to the audience. For someone who does not have an investing background, this is important.

Jack,
Thank you very much for your lifes work. Without your insight, drive, and determination, none of this would have been possible. The photo taken of us shaking hands will be proudly displayed for years to come!
This was my rookie year at the Boglehead's Reunion, and I look forward to greeting next year's first-timers with the same warmth and openness that greeted me. I met many fantastic, new friends (many that have already posted), and have learned something from each and every one of them. Echoing Lady Geek, the personal interactions cannot be replicated in a video or book.

We'll be making the announcement right here on the forum when it's ready. Stay tuned!BornInCA wrote:When will the DVD be available? How can I order a copy?
FYI, Rich, our volunteer Bogleheads videographer, has a side job (he's a heart surgeon), so we do have to allow him some spare time to edit the video and put it together.

Mr Bogle, you made a believer in me almost 30 years ago with Vanguard. Early in my investment days with Vanguard, I know that you would man the phones when all the customer representatives were busy, that sold me on my loyalty to Vanguard.
Thank you for your service. David

Re: BOGLEHEADS X--THE BEST!
Dear Mr. Bogle,
Although I read your, "Character Counts" book, I fear that my character is not yet fully developed as I find myself whining about not being able to attend BH X.
Just like I'm still whining about not attending BH I at Taylor and Pat's home. Anyway, I almost felt like I was there with you while viewing Gene's wonderful
photographs of the event. I'm looking forward to purchasing the DVDs when they become available-(Thank you Dr. Rich), but of course viewing a DVD, is never as wonderful an experience as seeing, hearing, (and hugging) and being with you in person.
I had my notebook at the ready when I watched your two interviews with M* Christine. And as always, I learned so much.
Thank you for your wisdom, and wise counsel through the years for all of us. You truly are, our champion.
With best wishes to you always,
Kathleen Ryan

Yes, believe me, I realize I am fortunate to have a job when so many are unemployed, so of course I have to do my best for my students, even when I so wanted to be at DH X.

Perhaps we need to find a way to clone ourselves, Kathleen. Even though I'm supposedly retired, I'm busier now than when I was running a company.Kathleen Ryan wrote:Thank you Mel

To Mel,
"Perhaps we need to find a way to clone ourselves, Kathleen. Even though I'm supposedly retired, I'm busier now than when I was running a company."
Yes, given the marvels of modern science this may not be too far off into the future!
