Did you load up on March 31? It's about that level right now.

We could get an inflation scare that leads to a selloff, particularly in the Nasdaq, but it could be exactly that, a scare and nothing more than transient inflation that soon blows away and people will curse themselves for not buying the dip. I actually discussed this theory last month. link

Ha! Yeah, I suppose they're also still in a trading range. I was actually referring to the post-earnings period where employees are free to trade their employer's stock.

Well, I probably won't need to rebalance out of equity funds as soon as I had thought.

Gotta look on the bright side, right? :D

Just meant the CPI report is released tomorrow. Though it would be cool if they made a whole day out of it, with music and dancing and a big piñata.

Wow, futures down -0.4%, that’s a bloodbath of historic magnitude! Never seen anything like this in my 20 years of investing, we are in some deep trouble.

Brace for some serious impact. I’m going all cash tomorrow, sit-out the upcoming crash, and then successfully time the market my re-entering just before the next bull run.

C'mon guys, haven't we talked US-only vs International to death. Let's get back to the topic at hand, US stocks in free fall. And we could get some stomach churning freefall if CPI gets wacky tomorrow morning! On the other hand, CPI might hand us a big nothing burger with all the juicy toppings.

A long interchange on the US vs. International debate has been removed. The thread was derailed.

Please stay on-topic - the US market, decreasing.

I wish we could see actual graphic comparisons of inflation YoY. I’m calling the bluff on the increase being due to the “base effect”.

I’ve read the news and boards way too much over the past couple years and I never saw prices fall much if at all…

Now everyone and everything is charging more for any product or service I’m interested in.

The market needs a serious correction to give me back confidence that we’re on the right track out of this mess. I’d have more confidence then oddly enough.

Plus International usually follows the US off the cliff the day after anyway.

Consumer price index – April 2021
The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) increased 0.8 percent in April on a seasonally adjusted basis after rising 0.6 percent in March, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Over the last 12 months, the all items index increased 4.2 percent before seasonal adjustment. This is the largest 12-month increase since a 4.9-percent increase for the period ending September 2008.

Why does increase inflation cause stock market to fall?

Is this just a temporary transient inflation? This too shall pass? Time to buy the dip?

Pipeline thing isn't captured in this report.

I get the brush off on the supply chain, however, if the supply chain issues continue, it can feedback onto the broader economy, which can then have wider spread effects like wage inflation. This happened in the 70s with the oil shock. And even when oil cratered around 1985, it took a long while for the inflation to settle down. So I'm careful of blowing off supply chain issues when they start having long tails as the semiconductor issue appears to have.

My vague understanding of things is that investors are nervous because stock prices are dependent on the Fed's easy-money policies. If the Fed is forced to tamper down on inflation, they'd have to stop the easy money.

Is this just a temporary transient inflation? This too shall pass? Time to buy the dip?
Expectation of higher rates. Rates go up. Value of cashflows go down.

We should see elevated inflation numbers through the summer as inflation was down last summer. If higher inflation persists into 2022, then we have a real problem.

My forecast is becoming clearer, US CPI peaks at 7% to 8% in June/July, bonds have final sell off - representing a great buying opportunity - before equity market bust in Q3/Q4.
