Are people buying for a dollar of earnings or a castle in the air?

Too bad. I was thinking to do a large rebalance into bonds today to build my bond tent. Looks like I have to do it tomorrow.
I was planning on the same thing. I had meant to put an order in yesterday to move $20k of S&P to Bonds to rebalance..... I didn't do that and now I think I'll wait a few days.
Looks like today will be a good day to make the move.
I am not timing the market, but rebalancing into bonds on a up day makes me feel good.

Yep, I'm enjoying watching my VIOV spar with VTI recently in price when 7 months ago it was well behind. VIOV out in front by a nose currently.

I imagine I'm largely to blame for today's highs. I deposited a large check Friday, and the funds were finally available to purchase VTSAX today. I also have contributions scheduled for the 24th and 28th, so I'm sure those will be record highs as well. :D

The crash is coming! Just you wait. My neighbor told me he recently totally pulled out of the market and purchased real estate in Hawaii with the proceeds. You have been warned!

This is actually a buy signal. It's when your neighbor sells his real estate to buy stocks that the end is near.

Went to Cabo in 2006, I remember being so pissed off because no matter where we went, someone was trying to get me to try a Timeshare (including the parking attendant and a grocery clerk). Right now, all you see is housing going up and more real estate agents then you can count. When you see everyone flocking toward any form of equity, that is your warning sign.

I got very concerned a few weeks ago when DW asked me out of the blue, "How do stocks work?" I asked why she asked, and she informed me that her best friend (struggling financially forever btw) told her that the doc she works for had been touting her investments and was particularly excited about some small company that is coming out with a new product. Of course, said friend wants to invest in it and apparently raised DW's interest as well. Easy money, folks!

I figured that was the time to sell, so I got completely out of the market. Now I'm tellling you guys so that you can follow my lead. (Just kidding on both counts)

BTW I was a little alarmed to see this thread bumped on a Sunday

The lava does make new land. There is even a small new island from the latest flow.
The problem is it is not very hospitable to live on for very many years. Of course that does not stop some people from trying (see pic below of house built on the last major lava flow), there is an entire neighborhood of homes like this.

Fortunately, the land we bought in Hawaii a few years ago is on the other side of the island from both the lava and the torrential rains! and, we didn't liquidate any of our investments to do it.

Worst luck for me. I just transferred some assets from another Rorth IRA and today is the day where they are in cash (buying mutual funds tonight). 26% of my total retirement portfolio sitting out today.

This also guarntees tomorrow will be a down day, just to rub it in for me. :annoyed

It's interesting that this thread is so active on a day when U.S. stocks are doing very well.

A daily reminder that even if you bought stock at the very top (Feb 2018) and the market tanked right after, it will eventually rise up to the top again.

But it's also a reminder to curb your enthusiasm on equity return in the future. If it's all green, great! If it's red, we expect no less :beer

Personally, I wouldn't invest in stocks if I didn't expect to be in the green over the long-term.

Sooner or later, US stocks will go into freefall, exactly as they have done on multiple occasions in my lifetime.

I think it's important to remember that the point of this thread is not to deride the notion of freefall itself, but the notion that we can predict when it will happen.

Why are folks updating this thread?
Perhaps someone can start a new thread that's titled "U.S. stocks still flying"....then I can know how well the market is doing to see which thread is being updated. :D

Well "somebody" (perhaps Goldstar?) could create a new thread, but I'll bet a buck that this thread will continue to thrive until locked!

I think it's hilarious that this thread started in 2011. If it had been started in 2008 it would have made more sense. Whenever I see this thread I think of doomsayers saying "The End Times Are Nigh"!

I concur, but I hope we can avoid the lock. This thread is a great reminder of how far off the mark our firm convictions can be and that nothing lasts forever even though it may seem like it.

If the thread bothers you then block it. Clearly many of us get a kick out of chatter related to swings in both directions. Although now that you’ve said this I presume there will be a drop big enough to halt trading tomorrow.

Locked? Are you kidding? This thread is therapy for many Bogleheads.

This post serves as my "upvote" for maintaining the thread. Like many (Goldstar excepted), I continue to get a kick out of it. Plus I think it serves an actionable purpose in reminding people that the market is indeed unpredictable, at least by people like me. It helps tame recency bias.

Threads remain open unless there's a good reason to lock it - which is determined by the moderators.

Goldstar has started the opposing point of view here: U.S. stocks continue to soar!

So, one thread for "freefall" and one for "soaring". That should cover it.

Actually, I have had a lot of fun in both threads. Joking about timing the markets using both threads as sentiment indicators. Of course, in real life I would do no such thing. There has also been pretty interesting discussion in both threads. "U.S. stocks in freefall" might be the most popular thread ever on Bogleheads. There is another one about Brokerage Bonuses that has run for a long time but not like this one.

It is a reflection of the anxiety that we have about markets, particularly as our account balances get higher and higher.

Total return of Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund Admiral Shares (VTSAX) is up 10.19% year to date.

Maybe corn18 is saying that treasuries have been like a roller coaster ride?

I think that's what he's saying - I'm just no sure how its relevant to the U.S. Stock Market being in freefall.
I think some folks are just trying to artificially keep this thread going so that FIREChief doesn't end up owing me a dollar.... 8-)

This is impossible because all the experts told us at the beginning of the year that market returns would be very subdued. You've obviously made an error here.

We should always believe expert predictions of markets, being predictions of human responses to events and conditions that haven't happened yet.

Total return of Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund Admiral Shares (VTSAX) is now up 10.79% year to date.
