A Real Hoot - Chinese Version of The Bogleheads' Guide
Hello Everyone:
I just received my author's copies of the Chinese version of The Bogleheads' Guide to Investing.
I can assure you that it's a real hoot to see it in Chinese. Perhaps I'll compare the two versions and learn Chinese.

Hi Mel,
Very Cool! Now Mr. Bogle, you, Taylor, and Michael, will all be famous in China. Just think of the billions of people over there just waiting to become Bogleheads too. 8)

Hi Mel,
My copies haven't arrived yet. When my first book was published, the first foreign edition of it was in Japanese. When I got the copies I thought to myself, "Isn't this one hell of a note. I wrote the book but can't read it."

I am wondering if it's aimed at Taiwan/Hong Kong/Overseas Chinese rather than the mainland market. I don't even think there are any vehicles for mainlanders to follow a Boglehead approach if they wanted to.Easy Rhino wrote:If common perception of the Chinese stock market is true, i worry that the book will only sell like six copies.

buy and hold low cost index funds might not make sense, at least for now.

I suspect you'll get yours tomm., Michael. You're a little further away from the shipping point (NJ) than I am.mlebuf wrote:Hi Mel,

Are you and Elke up for a book signing tour of China?

The "English" numbers would be Arabic, same as what we use. There are two ancient Chinese forms of numerals, but unlikely to be used in books.Mel Lindauer wrote:Yes, there are charts, and they use Chinese for the headers and side copy, but the numbers in the chart are regular English numbers.Random Musings wrote:Mel,

There are big Chinese reading populations in North America, so hopefully it will be available to folks that can follow Boglehead investing.SecretAsianMan wrote:I am wondering if it's aimed at Taiwan/Hong Kong/Overseas Chinese rather than the mainland market. Here's a link to the publisher's web site, but I don't know the Chinese words to put into the search box. I didn't see a picture of the book's cover (it's yellow with red and black Chinese writing and a photo of some kind of a lock box being opened with the key still in it and US currency showing inside the partially open safe.simplesimon wrote:Is there a link for the book for me to buy? I found it using the ISBN #. Here's how:simplesimon wrote:Is there a link for the book for me to buy? I'd like to get a copy for my folks.
1. Use the previous link I provided in the post above.
2. Go to the bottom of the page and click on the second box's drop down menu.
3. Select ISBN (the only English choice).
4. Type in 978-7-5086-1763-3
5. Hit the search box (I forgot whether it's the first or second after the ISBN drop down menu)
Good luck!

It's on the site under the title 越简单,越赚钱. You can find it by clicking on the 个人理财 link about halfway down the page on the left side. It's only 29 yuan (about $4.25)!Mel Lindauer wrote:Here's a link to the publisher's web site, but I don't know the Chinese words to put into the search box. It has a shopping cart icon, but I'm not a member of the site. Considering the price, however, I would be surprised if you can order it from the U.S. on there. Now that you know the Chinese title of the book, though, you may be able to request it at a Chinese-language bookstore.
Good luck!

Oh. The website has John Bogle listed as the author, but the cover that mas posted has the real authors. In case you wanted to know your Chinese names:jpsfranks wrote:They list the author as John Bogle.
约翰 = Yuēhàn = John
博格 = Bógé = Bogle (apparently this was also the used for Bjorn Borg's surname)

梅尔 林道 = Méiěr Líndào = Mel Lindauer

I know its legitemate.Morgan wrote:Actually that's very legitimate, most of the ETF, index books talk of USA benchmarks and funds/efts. It's only 35% or so of the world economy anyhow.stratton wrote:Yes, but did you change the mutual funds to fit the Chinese market?

You'll need one for Hong Kong I'm guessing for this book. If you tried to do worldwide you'd almost need one for every major market: Canada, UK, EU, Switzerland (?), Japan, Australia, Latin America, India, Singapore etc.

Something gets lost
"Something gets lost in the translation." 8)
I like this cover better: Can you guess why?
Translation of the Chinese version cover photo?
1.) The key is money?
2.) Money is the key?
3.) Stay out of the red, unlock the key to money?
P.S. Thank you Morgan for your post.

Notice how the red line is trending upwards (like your net worth should? )
The key to this is this book. What you'll get is $$$.
If this was a Family Guy episode, Peter would break open a fortune cookie and this book would fall out.

Ha ha ha ha ha 8) Very good.
It was nice meeting you while standing in line to have our books signed at the Bogleheads Reunion. We will have to schedule a local Central CA meeting to discuss the finer intricacies and deeper meaning of this Chinese Edition book cover of, "The Bogleheads' Guide to Investing."
Thank you. =-)

You can buy index funds in China. A few years ago, I found a database of mutual funds available and I saw 2 index funds .. one for stock (tracked the same index as FXI but on the internal market) and one for bonds. The costs were roughly:
1.5% load, 0.5% annual expenses.
By comparison, the rest of the actively managed funds were about:
1.5%-2.5% load, 0.75%-1.5% annual expenses
I do not believe it is possible to buy a fund without going through a broker although I didn't explore any further beyond browsing the database.

Micheal, I have a neighbor in Arizona who does some internet business in China and has learned the language. He visits there regularly and just took a tour of China with a Chinese group (100% chinese and no americans other than him) to better his language skills. I live close to you so he does too. If you are interested give me a PM and I will get you his number. Maybe he can provide some translating and some other info on culture, etc....

Re: A Real Hoot - Chinese Version of The Bogleheads' Guide
I offer to rename this chinese book. I felt that it's very poorly named. From chinese's perspective, it almost sounds like just another ponzi scheme.
and, you know, the saying that china is to stock fraud is not wrong.
