Roth Conversion Timing
Roth Conversion Timing
I'm planning a fairly large Roth conversion this year (top of the 24% bracket). Any thoughts on the timing for the conversion. I'm wondering if now would be a good time with the market down. Or wait till the end of the year, mid December-ish. Taxes will be withheld from the distribution.

You may want to read this thread on the timing aspect...viewtopic.php?t=391502
and maybe this one too for the paying taxes part...viewtopic.php?t=443242
Paying taxes from another source is often preferred.

Re: Roth Conversion Timing
Thanks for the threads. Paying taxes from a source other than than the conversion is not an option.

A dollar in Roth is worth more than a dollar in a taxable account. A dollar in taxable is worth more than a dollar in a tax-deferred account.
Re: Roth Conversion Timing
In my view it's always better to convert when the market is down since that reduces your ultimate tax liability. Of course, it's not easy to pick the right time when the market is down. It might be down further in three months, but it's more likely to be higher by year end. I actually did a conversion today.
