I think that the Conference organizing committee has done the impossible.
I thought that the speaker lineup from the 2022 Conference couldn’t be topped. But the 2023 lineup has even more luminaries than last year.
I’m looking forward to the 2023 Conference!

Will there be a recording of this event?
Re: IT’S TIME: REGISTER FOR THE 2023 BOGLEHEADS CONFERENCE
I appreciate that the conference is over a weekend.
I attended last year's conference and took three days off of work since it was Wednesday to Friday. However, since it starts on Friday this time, I would only need to take a single day off of work.
I was initially not planning to attend this year, but I am reconsidering.

Re: IT’S TIME: REGISTER FOR THE 2023 BOGLEHEADS CONFERENCE
I have registered for the conference and the dinner and booked the hotel. I have two observations:
1. I checked booking the hotel with my Marriott points but it was too expensive at 70k points per night. The conference rate is more advantageous. If you provide your Marriott account number, you will still get the benefits associated with your Marriott status.
2. The hotel is within a half-block from a Metro station, which is a significant benefit in DC.
I live in the Metro DC area and could have commuted to the conference daily. But I find an important value in socializing with other Bogleheads at breakfast, dinner, and nightly bar.
Looking forward to the Conference,
Victoria

This looks so exciting; I have to ask if anyone who went to the Chicago one last year found benefit going to it live rather than watching the recordings from home for free later?
Was there a lot of networking going on?
I have to ask obviously because there's obviously some cost associated with going in terms of money and effort.
Also, is the banquet worthwhile to attend for networking and learning from others?
Appreciate any feedback people have to offer.

Re: IT’S TIME: REGISTER FOR THE 2023 BOGLEHEADS CONFERENCE
I always enjoy meeting people and chatting with them but when I think about networking I tend to think about opening up some new business or career opportunity. I wouldn't expect that but there's certainly plenty of socializing. I think in person is way more fun than watching videos later, but if you just want the content.....Macaroni2314 wrote: ↑Fri Apr 14, 2023 12:50 pm This looks so exciting; I have to ask if anyone who went to the Chicago one last year found benefit going to it live rather than watching the recordings from home for free later?

Yes, you can get the content by watching videos. And if the quality of this years videos is the same as last year, they will give you good experience.
But I really enjoyed the “live” interaction with others. It was really gratifying to see that there are 400+ people who see things the way that I do. And I’d also suggest attendance at the banquet.
I’d encourage you to give this conference a try. If you like it, great; if not, you’ll know that for future reference.
An added plus is that one of DW’s favorite vacation spots is the DC area. So we’ll likely stay a few days before or after the conference.

VictoriaF,
Is the Silver Line open now to Washington Dulles airport? (Last time I was in DC, they hadn't even begun construction on it, which just shows how long it's been since I've been there.

Cool, finally! I will have to check it out some time this year, but sadly not for BH ‘23. Will spend that weekend in Hawai’i. Maybe next year I can avoid booking any travel for October until the date for BH ‘24 is known.
Re: IT’S TIME: REGISTER FOR THE 2023 BOGLEHEADS CONFERENCE
From my point of origin, I can't fly (at a reasonable price point) on Oct. 13 and get to the conference by 1pm. Therefore, if I want to attend the full conference, I'll have to arrive in the area by Oct. 12.Bogle Center wrote: ↑Wed Apr 12, 2023 5:08 pm The conference will run from 1 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 13, through 12 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 15.

You can make hotel reservations and receive the special conference rate of $135/night via https://book.passkey.com/event/50527737 ... 44099/home.
The link above didn't allow me to include the night of Oct. 12 in the reservation. Does this mean the conference discount is for the nights of the 13th and 14th only?
Google shows the hotel as being $212 for the 12th, so I guess that's an option (just not so great a price).

Then it seems to be a thing of the past. As of now, via the above link, including Oct. 12 results in:

No worries. Maybe I'll stay in DC on the night before the conference.

This time, I decided to stay the extra nights before/after in DC. Flying into Dulles, I can take the DC Metro to Metro Center, Hotel Harrington is nearby, cheapest room is $125+tax. The next day, I can take DC Metro right to the Conference hotel. I think this makes for a more interesting trip than staying the extra nights in Rockville.

Re: IT’S TIME: REGISTER FOR THE 2023 BOGLEHEADS CONFERENCE
I have only been to two Bogleheads Conferences, in 2018 and 2019. In both cases, my wife and I rented the hotel room for an extra couple of days and took in some vacation time in the Philadelphia area, which we enjoyed very much. (In the case of this year's conference, I wanted to do the same in DC, but we have a conflict that makes it impractical.) If you've never been to Washington DC, I'd encourage you to add a few days onto the reservation and take in the sights there.tennis4030 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 18, 2023 4:47 pm I am new to the group and this year will be my first Bogleheads conference. That is great news about the train, being so close. If I am correct, I can do this on the cheap...pay the air fare, about $1000 RT, and then the banquet is $100. Is there a grocery store in the area? I am a pretty good walker, so anything within about a mile radius is good.

This appears to no longer be the case. I see rooms available for Thursday through Sunday nights for 32K, 27K, 24K, and 32K points for both 1 King and 2 double rooms. When I checked a couple weeks ago, none were available.VictoriaF wrote: ↑Fri Apr 14, 2023 11:27 am 1. Note that it looks like the late checkout benefit isn't guaranteed for Platinum status at conference center locations.
Checking in the past hour or so, I saw the $135 (+13% tax) rate for Thursday through Sunday nights, up to 4 nights.HanSolo wrote: ↑Tue Apr 18, 2023 5:09 pm Then it seems to be a thing of the past. As of now, via the above link, including Oct. 12 results in:

Thank you, Lyrrad, this is helpful.Lyrrad wrote: ↑Sat Apr 29, 2023 2:39 amThis appears to no longer be the case. I checked booking the hotel with my Marriott points but it was too expensive at 70k points per night. The conference rate is more advantageous. If you provide your Marriott account number, you will still get the benefits associated with your Marriott status.
I live in the DC area and need the hotel only for two nights, Friday and Saturday. I have booked at the BH Conference rate for 2 x $135 + 13% = $305.10.
Using a conservative value of Marriott points as 1 pt = $0.007, a comparable cost in points would have to be $305.10 / $0.007/pt = 44k for two nights. As of this writing, I could get two nights for 69k. And so I am keeping my dollar-based reservation. But I'll be checking the point rates in case they drop.

Arrgh! Looks like the hotel discount rate is back to just Fri and Sat night again. Hoping they will open up some more nights at the discounted rate!

Hi all,
Just a quick note that unfortunately, JL Collins will not be able to participate in this year's conference. (We're sad, too.) We wanted to alert you as soon as we found out.

Re: IT’S TIME: REGISTER FOR THE 2023 BOGLEHEADS CONFERENCE
I had previously booked the two nights of the Conference at the conference rate. This week, I got wind of an offer to take a tour of a famous five-sided building next time I was in DC, so I called the Marriott number trying to add a day on the front of the booking (I have a conflict after the conference so I couldn't add it on the end). The best they allegedly could do was to cancel my existing booking and re-book the three-night stay at normal rates. I told them "no thanks".

Did you just book a one night stay for the night before at a non-conference rate (direct seems to be $275/27,000 pts) and keep the original 2 night booking to follow?oldcomputerguy wrote: ↑Sun May 07, 2023 7:04 pmI had previously booked the two nights of the Conference at the conference rate. Or better yet stay in DC the night before?

I thought about it. However, my wife also likes to go to DC, and she isn't able to come with me to the Conference, so we're just going to book another trip sometime in the near future and both enjoy it.

Is it (i) suit and tie for men and comparable for women, (ii) business casual, or (iii) fully casual for the banquet, and for the program?

You'll see everything from suit and tie to jeans and t-shirts. I think the most common for men is probably dress pants and dress shirt, no tie/jacket.
I hope this means you'll be joining us! I'd love to meet you in person.
