Bogleheads now on YouTube

Post by LadyGeek »

We now have a YouTube channel. Wait, what? Yes, we’re on YouTube. See: Bogleheads

As some members already know, the Bogleheads local and virtual chapters have been recording their virtual Zoom meetings. Those meetings are published on YouTube, but are done so in way that keeps them from appearing in the Google search engine (“Unlisted”).

You could only find the video if you knew the link.* Although this is helpful for the meeting attendees, it does little with getting Jack Bogle’s investment philosophy out to the general population.

We were avoiding the YouTube search engine is due to advertising. In addition to the site owners’ desire to have no advertising on this site, there is a relationship to the John C. Bogle Center for Financial Literacy – an IRS qualified non-profit organization.

Accepting advertising (here, or by or any site with a relation to the Bogle Center) runs afoul of IRS regulations and is not permitted (unrelated business). This is a big deal, as a non-profit organization will be disqualified by the IRS for violating these regulations.

A publicly visible YouTube video will have advertisements appear that are out of our control. If (insert financial advisory firm) wanted to advertise on the page, we could not stop it.

Until now.

The Bogle Center has recently received approval under the YouTube Nonprofit Program, which is intended for IRS 501(c)(3) compliance (nonprofit organization). We get the full benefit of the Google search engine with no ads.

The YouTube channel is managed by forum member VELO724x (Bogle Center board member Dr. Ricardo Guerra), the videographer who recorded the Bogleheads Conferences.

I’m working directly with Rich and have uploaded all of the Bogleheads Chapter Series videos to the channel. Rich has uploaded all of the Bogle Center’s Speaker Series videos, as well as all of his conference videos that are currently on Vimeo.

We’re working together to get John Bogle’s investment philosophy out to everyone world-wide. The YouTube channel is a step in the right direction.

* See: Virtual online chapter presentations, which has been updated for the Bogleheads YouTube channel.

You're welcome.

Astute viewers will note that the first video video in the Bogleheads Conference Proceedings playlist is from 2010. Why? It's a quick investing intro by Jack himself.

See: Bogleheads® Conference 2010 - Jack Bogle on Investing: The Essentials

The interviewer is Rich Guerra.

The Chapter Series videos represent a ton of work by the Bogleheads local (and virtual) chapters. If anyone would like to help, please take a look at all of the activity in the US Chapters forum. The assistance is much appreciated.

This is a great idea since Youtube is now a major trusted source of personal finance information and education for the general public. Anything that spreads the word on Mr. Bogle's teachings is a very good thing.

This is a very good thing, making it easier to access the excellent information in these sessions. Not sure if YouTube is on the whole a major trusted source, but this particular set of videos will be.

Thank you, Thank you to Lady Geek, and Dr. Rich,

for letting us know. Woo hoo! How exciting. 🎉🎊 It's wonderful to know, more people will be learning about Mr. Bogle's investing philosophy, who might not have been reached yet.

I just shared this special announcement with our members/readers/lurkers, at our Facebook Bogleheads site.

This is huge. :happy

I have also posted this announcement to our blog: Bogleheads now on YouTube

I've previously stated that I'm an admin for the Bogle Center's website and I have also posted the announcement here: Bogle Center adds Conference Proceedings and Chapter videos to YouTube

The Bogle Center actually posted the Speaker Series a few days earlier, hence the prior announcement.

Our reach continues to grow globally, and this is yet another great tool to help spread Jack Bogle's and the Bogleheads' message to help even more investors.

Well done, Rich, Lady Geek and everyone else involved in making this happen. And to Kathleen for helping to spread the word on Facebook.

This section also provides for links. The Bogle Center is also on Twitter and has announced the YouTube channel.

In case anyone who subscribed to the channel was wondering why they got a notification, we missed uploading one of the videos from Vimeo (2018 John Bogle Q&A). It's available now.

The wiki has been updated for the YouTube channel. See: Bogleheads® Conferences

Each of the conference videos are located under the appropriate year. If you want to know what happened at the conference and only saw the video, this is where to look.

To avoid confusion between the conference number and the year, I modified the section titles to add the conference year.

Thank you Mel,

for mentioning about our Bogleheads Facebook site. To date, after only being posted about six hours ago, 5,346 people have been reached.

This is so historic, to have our own Bogleheads YouTube Channel!

I know Mr. Bogle would be so happy to reach even more people. Being the Bogleheads are such a tech savvy group, I'm confident, we'll keep up with the new platforms that become established, and reach even more people, especially the younger generations to come, and keep Mr. Bogle's memory, and investment philosophy alive.
Best wishes, | Kathleen

We have added the Bogleheads YouTube site link to the "Follow Us" segment of the Bogle Center site header. In case you are not familiar with logos, the order of links in this segment are:

To help viewers find the Bogleheads chapter meetings, along with our email subscription list (yes, we have one), I have updated the Chapter Series show notes (description) to point to the blog's Calendar of Events.

In the Bogleheads conference proceeding videos, I have added a link to the wiki's Bogleheads® Conferences article so viewers can see the videos in the context of the conference, along with finding everything else we post about the conferences.

My first post for this forum is here to say a major THANK YOU! The Youtube page looks like it's filled with a wealth of knowledge, no pun intended, and as a relative newbie to investing (about a year or so in) , I have found lurking on this forum, watching Jack interviews, and reading the Boglehead books incredibly helpful. The Youtube channel is something that I will joyfully have occupy my time for the remainder of the summer :)

Thanks so much for doing this! I find that every once in a while I need a reminder of why I invest the way I do. (Yes, I know I shouldn’t be swayed by the day to day fluctuations of the market, but sometimes I blink.) Getting a dose of Bogle wisdom definitely has a calming and reassuring effect. Thanks again!

This is awesome!!! Thanks to all involved for making this happen.

I spend a good bit of time on YouTube, and greatly appreciate this valuable addition.

One comment/request I do have, though, concerns the documentation for the videos. I just watched the thoroughly enjoyable Bogleheads® Speaker Series – Panel of Experts with Benz, Bernstein, Piper and Roth, moderated adeptly by Karen Damato, for example, and was interested in knowing when the panel discussion was recorded. The timing of a discussion often helps to provide additional context. I just couldn't find that date anywhere.

Is there any way the recording dates could be added to the video pages?

Thanks again for a wonderful resource!
