And then, suddenly, US oil production starts rising again (and is now pretty close to its all time peak?). That's fracking."

The words "Peak Oil" is not allowed to be spoken on Bogleheads forum? Why?
Because Peak Oil is a highly controversial topic that resulted in many contentious discussions. Several years ago, it was one of the entries in the Non-actionable (Trolling) Topics guidelines, but was later removed when Peak Oil was no longer discussed. Please refrain from broaching this topic.

If there are any further questions, please PM me. Don't post in the thread. Thanks.

Wiki To some, the glass is half full. To others, the glass is half empty. To an engineer, it's twice the size it needs to be.

It is a mixed bag as to VDE's long-term future. I will say that the industry is not going anywhere fast (positively or negatively) since I have ground-level knowledge of this sector. It could definitely burn investors as VDE is volatile; it could reward them, however.

I know some other countries are more oil heavy, so investing in international ETFs could give you the desired outcome; I say to do this first.

Most investors (especially if diversified globally) have plenty of oil already and do not need VDE to further that "oil risk". VDE is left for those who have some solid reason to overweight it beyond the market weight; if you are not a speculator, then very likely you do not need it.
It is better to be half-wrong than have a 50% chance of being all-wrong. With the former, you will learn and have money to try again. Otherwise, you will never learn and will have nothing eventually.
