Graph of percentage change by day?

Post by Diver4242 »

I've been searching for a graph that would show me percentage change in a fund price by day for some period of time. How could I see that?

You could go to finance.yahoo.com entering your fund ticker and then bring up the historical prices column, download that to a spreadsheet, calculate the % change, and create a chart.

Marketwatch, Yahoo, StockCharts have it for funds.
For these sites, if you look for the ";Rate of Change (ROC) indicator", then change the period (the lookback period) it will show a chart with the 1-day change.

Marketwatch, if you enter your symbol, go to Advanced Charts, ROC is in the dropdown for "Lower Charts".

Yahoo is a similar sup, with the added bonus that you can download the daily prices if you want to do your own calculations.

Correct. For example, here is a bar chart I made in Excel of Vanguard's Total Stock Market fund for March 2020. [*] I didn't realize the daily changes were so extreme that month.

Code: Select all

* Before reading dbr's post, I had already copied and pasted the prices from Vanguard's website by clicking Search for more historical price information on the Price & Performance tab. Downloading prices from Yahoo Finance would probably have been easier. Also, Yahoo displays dividends so that I could see the price rise March 25th was despite $0.297 being paid out that day.

It is surprising how large the fluctuation in daily gain/loss is compared to the loss from issuing a quarterly dividend and explains why the effect on price of issuing a dividend is mostly unnoticeable.
