Gold continues to soar!

Why do people keep posting Gold Bear sentiments with the market at all time highs AGAIN!
More of us are becoming Gold Bulls everyday.
I continue to adjust my AA - moving Gold to stocks - but it appears there is no stopping this Bull!

If gold does poorly people on this forum will point at that as proof it's a bad investment.

If it does well they point to it as a bubble.

No honest discussion. Everyone just wants to play "Heads I win. Tails you lose."

It's just another variation on SCV vs. TSM. If SCV does well then "past performance doesn't guarantee future results." If SCV does poorly then it's all about "SCV has been the worst performing category according to Morningstar."

It pains me that people don't see the basic contradiction.

Almost anything outside of stock/bond index funds is derided by some here: annuities, real estate investing, entrepreneurship, precious metals, private equity, etc.

I've still enjoyed my brief time posting here and much longer time reading due to the wealth of information.

don't forget bitcoin, which is not a precious metal.

btw, not all annuities are not derided, just indexed annuities, the most heavily promoted by insurance sharks salespeople. SPIAs are often recommended under the right circumstances.

Entrepreneurship is not derided. But many who inquire aren't aware of all the various risks involved. Many people think it's easy to start a business and the money just flows. Same with real estate. It doesn't always work that way. Bogleheads can tend to be cautious and want investments to be passive, not active. Nothing wrong with that. Many here ask, "What do I do now? Just sold my business for $3 million." There's hard work. And there's luck. Sometimes both can be involved in these situations. Diversifying and owning the global economy removes the luck and rewards the patient.

so you've read "a long time ago". but maybe it's time to re-read.

Not miners. If you're looking for an ETF, I believe BAR and AAAU are now the cheapest and second cheapest. (I may own one/both).

As anoop pointed out later in the thread, SGOL is also tied to BAR for expenses.

Well, there's a long running "Stocks Continue to Soar" thread so why not gold although, over the long term, soar might not turn out to be the right word for gold.

No you have it all wrong. The speculative question - $1600? - juxtaposed against the current price is what gave the thread its charm.

I own a decent chunk of physical gold I bought at an average price of $600 or $660 fifteen years ago. I think the party is just getting started.

The allocation in my portfolio will get rebalanced out of gold if this up trend continues... But I'm waiting for my Mom to call me asking if she should buy gold before I start selling the physical stuff.

Depends I guess on why did you buy the gold in the first place? For me, if I bought gold it would be to enjoy as a coin hobby and wouldn't ever sell and look to pass it down to my future generations.

At the time I bought it, my intention was to hold it as sort of a doomsday asset and/or pass it on to kids (tax free :D ). But since then, my views have evolved and now I am not that big a fan of gold. So I am a bit ambivalent.

No.

I asked my wife today if she heard that gold hit an all time high and she said no.

If she comes home and tells she some news about gold, then I would actively start looking to sell. Not because she gives a hoot about it, but because she would hear about it at work.

That's an excellent question ... I know some of the miners like Newmont (NEM), Barrack(GOLD) and Agnico Eagle(AEM) are rather large companies and you would think they should be part of the index. Curious to see if anyone knows the answer to this.

NEM is in S&P 500. I didn't see the others in ITOT, but that may be due to sampling.

Barrick is the 6th top holding of iShares MSCI Canada ETF, and Agnico is 22nd. I assume both can be found in Total International.

Not miners. If you're looking for an ETF, I believe BAR and AAAU are now the cheapest and second cheapest. (I may own one/both).
I'm curious but have never checked are gold or any precious metals miners part of the total stock market ? I know commodities are not. Or at least I don't think they are...
That's an excellent question ... I know some of the miners like Newmont (NEM), Barrack(GOLD) and Agnico Eagle(AEM) are rather large companies and you would think they should be part of the index. Curious to see if anyone knows the answer to this.
Barrick is the 6th top holding of iShares MSCI Canada ETF, and Agnico is 22nd. I assume both can be found in Total International.
Can't believe I didn't realize those were from Canada

Based on my fair value model that treats gold as a long term inflation adjusted bond, gold is still catching up to the tremendous decline in long term real yields. Fair value is $2109 vs. spot price of $2068, given 30-year real interest rates of -0.48%.

The decline in real interest rates has gone beyond what I thought we'd ever see. Gold can be thought of as a canary in the coal mine of commodity inflation. If people start hoarding commodities like oil, rather than just precious metals, in response to the poor returns offered by bonds, we would finally see low rates leading to inflation.

Why Silver? Is this a short term position for you or do you plan to hold long term?

Thanks
I've just been using it to collect Option premium due to it's currently high IV, I wouldn't have the courage to hold it but congrats to whoever has been holding :moneybag :moneybag
