I'll be buying at the close today. There very well may be more pain from here but this seems like a decent spot to get in.

My son will be nibbling at the close today as well by buying more of his Vanguard target return fund. He's only 30 so he will be investing for the long term, i.e., 35 years. In 35 years, this downturn will be just a blip in what we hope will be a steady upward trend over the long haul. I might even nibble as well even though I'm 73 and retired. As to how much, it won't be much but just enough to feel that I took advantage of a buying opportunity. We could be trying to catch the proverbial "falling knife," but over the long term we should be okay.

Just put in an order. Shifted around 3% of my portfolio from fixed income to stocks, per my IPS. Maybe it goes down from here, or up.

The problem is not just now. The entire world is in lock down/hold mode and the entire affect on economy will not be seen until earnings are reported for next 2-3 quarters. and on top of all this, it is not like Corona virus is peaked out and it is going to recede from here. I suspect that it will go down even more over time.

Well, the problems aren't over, but of course if you subscribe to any version of the efficient market hypothesis then you believe the markets are pricing in a range of forward-looking probabilities. But let's step back and look where we are so far.

Including today, we've already seen a substantial drop in stock prices. I don't know if it's the last one, but this drop is forward-looking, as in: it factors in the things you are expecting to unfold, one way or another. So you still have to know better than the market to expect it to go down.

I put in an order today to exchange some Total Bond Index money into Small Cap Index fund in a deferred account. My AA was out of whack by more than 5%, and VG's new web layout was telling me this repeatedly. I didn't exchange enough to bring it back to my desired AA, but back within 5%. I'm not too worried about it yet.

I bought my first 3x weighted short/bear etf today. Small potatoes, $3500. I wish I had the guts to go really big at times like this. I think there is much more fear to come which will drive stocks lower. My regular contributions to 457k are continuing as always. I consider anything under $10k play money.

I was thinking you are 100% stock investor (who will be the only category that can not buy stocks when stocks are down).

Generally, people sell bonds to buy stocks.

No. Bonds/cash. 'Dry powder' is an illusion. It's just inflation-dragged cash you're pretending isn't part of your portfolio. /2 cents

$5k worth of VTI today for the 4th time since the decline started. Sold some former company stock in my IRA during 2019 and never re-invested it so I've been heavier in cash than I should be. Also never invested my Roth contributions or solo 401k contributions from last year so again, I'm needing to put that money to work. I absolutely think this thing will go down further, but I'm not trying to time a bottom. Just prefer to invest lumps on bad days and there weren't any in 2019.

eta: For posterity, here are my VTI prices paid so far:
2/24/2020 = $164.00
2/28/2020 = $146.40
3/06/2020 = $148.00
3/09/2020 = $141.00

I made a slight AA adjustment (not a tactical one, but one I've been ironing out over the past few weeks). This moved me from 80% to 90% equities, extended the duration and quality of my bonds, and tilted equities slightly.

I will continue making my monthly IRA contributions and my biweekly 401k contributions. Plans shouldn't change because of market movements.

yep, that's why I'm waiting until the quarterly reports start to come out; likely see a further drop and that's when my "dry powder" will start to get used
(retired, have pension, still deferring SS but could start anytime, under 2% wr..... and IPS has at 45% equities; gain harvesting on 11/27, kept in MM since, had us at 42% before drop)

{AFA cash being "inflation drag".... in retirement preservation is as important as growth, especially if wr is as low as ours is}

Placed $2,000 in the market last week (Biotech stock and a fund). Could have waited for the dip today but I don't have a crystal ball. Other than that, I'm staying the course.

That damn tax loss harvest. Too bad I don't make excess cash (all cash already routed too efficiently to find 'free cash' lying around).

Going to try to increase my emergency fund a bit more in the next few months in case of unemployment, etc.

That said, I think stocks are bargains now for long term holders. It was basically always a bargain but from today, a super bargain

Bought 25k (1.25% on 2/27), Bought 12k (0.6% on 2/28) as normal contribution, and bought another 25k today 3/9.

That's what my IPS says to do - down more than 5% in personal portfolio and SP500 down 2.5% triggers a once per pay period buy of 25k. Essentially I'm moving my six month emergency fund from cash to credit.

Transitioned from TRD 2035 to 2045 in my active 401k.

May switch to TRD 2045 in my other 401k and my wifes accounts later this week...

I bought $30k of FSKAX from the dry powder in the Fidelity Brokerage

I also preponed the Roth conversion of $30k of VBTLX to VTSAX .

I suspect the Market will recover, (do not know when) as the domestic fundamentals & positive job growth have not changed much, except the wretched virus.

We have "working capital" that is not counted as part of our equity portfolio -- because it might potentially be invested in real estate, private equity, VC, etc.

Stocks are only 35% of our net worth.

If stocks get cheap enough, our IPS allows for us to re-allocate working capital from other non-equity projects to equities.

I make my 401k contribution monthly, within the first few business days of the month. As long as I have the revenue coming in, I will make the contribution. Every dime goes into Wellesley (VWINX), regardless of the price or circumstances.

That is my course, and I'm staying it, even if that means I have to tighten the belt on the burger and beer fund.

Thanks for sharing this. I figure if push comes to shove, and I manage to get "greedy while others are fearful", I could delay my summer property acquisition and buy something weird like Vg Total Stock if it seems cheap. That would sooooo be market timing, though.

Rebalanced (effective at close) today, moving money from bonds to stocks. I'm not a market timer, but if you wanted to try and time the market taking a shot right here at right around the 20% down mark isn't a bad idea.

I exchanged some of the 'general' account (our bond holding) in my 457 for SP500 index. So I 'bought' some, I guess, via re-balancing.

My current 457 account gets funded via check from our local government's payroll office. The timing seems random - check cutting, mail delivery, etc, I guess. Never 14 days apart, repeatedly. Just looked and my last contribution went in on 3/4 - the last "peak" we had.

The harder conversation for us will be at -50% -- that's where our IPS says DW and I talk about whether we should use our vacation home savings.
