December "Bogleheads on Investing" podcast guest will be Sheryl Garrett

Post by Rick Ferri » Sat Nov 16, 2019 12:57 pm

My guest in December will be Sheryl Garrett, CFP, the founder of the Garrett Planning Network, a nationwide network of more than 300 hourly based financial advisors whose mission is to help make competent, objective financial advice accessible to all people.

Garrett is frequently quoted in media and a recipient of numerous awards and recognition for her contributions in the field of financial advice. She's written, co-authored or served as a series editor on more than a dozen books and has been very involved in financial education and awareness and investor protection.

President Barack Obama singled out Sheryl eight times during a 2015 speech at an AARP event. He said she was an adviser who puts clients' interests first and supported her efforts for tougher investment-advice standards for brokers who handle retirement plans.

This episode will focus on the financial advice business. Please post your questions for Sheryl here. Only general questions, please. No personal advice questions.

Questions for Sheryl:
  • Do investors modify financial plans more/less frequently when employing AUM or fee-based compensation models?
  • For individual investors employing automated advisory products/providers, is the high deprecation rate a concern?
  • Should one size fit most? How should individual investors respond to financial advice rooted in projection?
Thank you Rick for hosting these podcasts.

Questions -

For what type of client is a firm like Sheryl's most appropriate? Are there investors who are too large/small/complicated to benefit from her firm's services?

How can her firm maintain "quality control" over the 300+ advisors in the network?

Rick, thanks for hosting the podcasts. You have an excellent "radio voice", and you've gotten A++ guests to join you on the podcasts.

Now that Vin Scully has retired, Rick Ferri ought to be the new Voice of the Dodgers! Just kidding, but Rick does a very good job on the podcasts. Keep them going. The Dodgers' spot is filled, Rick can settle for being the Voice of the Bogleheads.

What plans are in the works to improve the Garrett Planning Network? From friends who have tried to use GPN, they found advisors who wanted to convert them to an asset-under-management style relationship and not an hourly arrangement.

How are the service providers in the GPN vetted, if at all?

What is the annual turnover of service providers in the GPN? That is, if I had searched 2 years or 1 year ago, what percentage of new service providers would I end up with if I searched now?

I have a question about giving & financial planning. There is alot of attention given to asset accumulation, low cost investing but less on how giving should fit into financial plans. Since our resources (including money) are expressions of our values, how has she or seen other financial planners integrate giving into financial plans?

Rick,

Here are a couple ....

- What if any screening does Garrett do for advisors that become part of their network?
- What feedback and monitoring processes are in-place for regulating advisors under their umbrella?
- Why do the allow dual fee-types (e.g. either hourly or AUM) to be part of their network?

Thanks

Here is my question: “Why should a Bogleheads investor with a three-fund portfolio consider consulting with a fee-only financial planner? I don’t need investment advice. What else do they offer?”

A couple of questions:
1. What changes has she seen in the qualifications, experience and demographics of advisor joining GPN?
2. Does GPN have data on the type of clients coming to GPN members? Are these folks early in their careers or with smaller portfolios compared to the industry average?
3. What changes she would like to see from the regulatory perspective that will help improve the image of the industry?
Thanks!
