Post by Taylor Larimore » Wed Oct 23, 2019 9:56 am

Bogleheads:

The Wall Street Physician has written this nice article about Vanguard's Total Market Index Fund:

Invest In The Largest Mutual Fund In The World

Best wishes.

Then show up.late to the party when international does well. Start a thread asking if you should get back into total international index because VTSAX is such a drag.

It's the largest fund and it still doesn't suffer from asset bloat (Three Fund Portfolio) - or so I'm told by a reliable source.

VTSAX is also my favorite mutual fund.

I thought WSP had started blogging again (he seems to have quit in February) but it was just a republication/update of a prior post. Maybe that means he's starting up again. I hope so. It was a promising blog.

The author takes no stance on whether one should or should not invest outside of the US.

It reads as if nothing exists outside of the US.

That’s like complaining about an article advocating the virtues of asparagus doesn’t comment on cantaloupes.

People born and raised in US carry a rosy view of world outside the US which is natural. Outside world is not as ethical and rule based as US and this is coming from someone who migrated to US from somewhere else. Even criminals stop at red light here because it’s ingrained in everyone’s mind. Buying international total stock is not similar to buying total US market. Diversification argument is similarly flawed in this regard- I don’t diversity fine wine by buying rotten cheese.

Great point. All of the professional/institutional traders around the world must be morons for not factoring any of this extra risk into the valuations of these ex-US stocks...

The article linked makes no argument for or against international investing.

Perhaps we can save this (endless) debate for another thread?

Apparently, there's a "diehard" fan of the largest mutual fund in the world:

Born and raised in Venezuela, can confirm the US is far more structured and dependable than Ex-US.

I keep 40% of my stocks in International and overweight Emerging.
