Morningstar.com shows that VSMGX (LifeStrategy Moderate Growth with a 60/40 AA) lost about 3% for May 2019.

I’m down a cool $80k, but TLH’d $2k. I’m hoping for a solid 14% drop so I can complete my TLH wheel from December and get everything back to Vanguard funds.

Fun month. Good luck all!

We took an overseas trip, I ran a road race and one of my clients signed a nice contract. May 2019 was a good month.

I look at my portfolio on the first day of each month. I don’t pay any attention to the short term performance.

May 2019 was a "devastating" month

-$85K investment returns (which I don't track or notice)
-$672K withdrawal for a house downpayment (which I definitely DID notice, hoping to never make as big a withdrawal ever again)

I took a withdrawal during the month of May. How do I account for that during the month of May when making a comparison of end of April to end of May balances?

You could do

Code: Select all

(May - April) / April
or

Code: Select all

(May - April + withdrawal amount) / April
or load up excel and do an XIRR calculation. I'd probably do the former since I'm only interested in overall portfolio movement and not calculating the actual return % of my portfolio.

Easiest way is this, IMHO. Find four numbers:

A = the 4/30 closing balance on your account
B = the account balance immediately before your withdrawal
C = the account balance immediately after your withdrawal
D = the 5/31 closing balance

Note that C minus B = the withdrawal amount

Return for the month is:

Code: Select all

((B/A) x (D/C)) - 1

I had a loss of 1.5% on a 40/60 stock/bond two-fund asset allocation in May 2019. I have a gain of 7.3% YTD through May 2019. :)

Overall, I slept pretty well.
Didn’t get back to my exercise regime though.
Got in a couple fun trips.
Kept the lawn adequately mowed and fertilized.

MAY 2019 down 2.6%, 65% equities, 35% stable assets.

DEC 2018 was down 5.2% with same asset allocation.

Like previous poster, I check every month, just for information.

Interesting that so many people seem to track performance on a 31 day period based upon a calandar month. I don't do this.

So, how do you track it?

I track it monthly because Quicken does and that makes it easy.

I look at it monthly because I have a lot of money still flowing in and have to make investments are adjustments. I also TLH. Monthly is just convenient.
