50/50

I've been fairly close to 50/50 for many years. How far back does Vanguard's Total Int'l go? Early 1980's? That's about how long I've been hanging around 50/50. I've been more, and then less attentive to rebalancing at various time periods in my life. My Int'l does tilt a good bit now to the small caps - think VSS. Is this TMI?

OP - If you get a good number of responses, will you tally and post at the top of the thread? I miss the old days when we could take and create our own polls which included a variety of options and automatically tallied results.

Vanguard is pretty much saying market cap weight BUT making sure they're sensitive to not trolling the home bias people.

"Conclusion
In light of our quantitative analysis and qualitative
considerations, we have demonstrated that domestic
investors should consider allocating part of their
portfolios to international equities. In determining how
much to allocate between domestic and international
equities, a helpful starting point for investors is global
market-capitalization weight. In practice, many investors
will consider an allocation below this starting point based
on their sensitivity to a number of considerations,
including volatility reduction, implementation costs,
taxes, regulation, and their own preferences. "

70% US, 30% Ex-US. Vanguard recently recommended an allocation of 40% international.

Seriously? Your US / ex-US allocation is a PDF?
Why would an investor choose their US:international allocation based on opinions of anonymous posters on a website? Wouldn't you generally want to have some reasoning behind the decision? You're going to find international equity allocation to be anything between 0-50% on this board and everywhere else. Digging a little deeper to understand why a specific allocation was chosen would be more helpful to most.

Yes, I intend to tabulate results.

I intend to use 55% U.S./45% ex-U.S. for those who answer --"market weight", or "whatever Vanguard Total World Stock Index Fund (VTWAX) is", or similar.

+1, though half of our EM is EM bonds. I don't allocate them as bonds since they are quite volatile. So I guess we're 50 US / 25 developed / 12.5 EM stock / 12.5 EM bond.

Close enough to 50/50.

I split the difference of 50/0 so I'm 25% IXUS (or VXUS or VTIAX). Hopefully I will spend half the time complaining about having too much Intl. and the other half complaining about having too little. Right now the former is taking over the brain.

80% US/20% Intl

Mainly skewed to US do to funds in 401k plan. I've upped taxable and IRA contributions recently to Intl to get closer to 70/30 split over the next year.

90/10.

I'm in the camp that argues multinational companies in the S&P 500 provide sufficient international diversification. Moreover, the U.S. is such a large economy that a large downturn in the U.S. would hit any other equity market just as badly if not worse. I also don't trust the regulatory environment for emerging markets.

n = 81 so far. Not large compared to most prior polls, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014.

5%, 15%, 25% etc. rounded up to 10%, 20%, 30% etc.
"market weight" counted as 50%

% of equities in non U.S. equities
00% , 8= 10%
10%, 2= 2%
20%, 18 =24%
30%, 20 = 25%
40%, 8 = 10%
50%, 25 = 31%

median between 20% and 30%.
