A great article Rick - thank you.

Am deeply saddened by his loss but eternally grateful for his contribution to society and my account balance. A titan.

Was trying to think about what I could do in his honor and I'm gonna drink a good glass of my (moderately) expensive bourbon while making an additional contribution to my S&P index fund. I hope he'd approve.

RIP mister John C. Bogle. I cannot think of anyone else in investing history who impacted investors everywhere in such a positive manner. He was a true visionary and his S&P500 first index fund was truly a disruptive innovation in the financial world. I will miss his wisdom very much. Rest in peace.

This excerpt from Rickś article really resonated with me.
One of my favorite books Jack Bogle wrote was titled “Enough, True Measures of Money, Business, and Life”. It reveals Jack’s unparalleled insights on money and what we should consider as the true treasures in our lives. He details the values we should emulate in our business and professional callings and provides thought-provoking life lessons regarding our individual roles in society. Jack examined what it truly means to have "enough" in a world increasingly focused on status and score-keeping.
I have a number of Jack´s books, but this is also a personal favorite of mine and the one I had already decided to re-read before going to bed tonight.

Rick, that was a very nice tribute to the great John Bogle. I think perhaps from now on I might refer to him as St. Jack Bogle. He was truly a great man, one of those rare people with whom I was increasingly impressed with. That is hard to do.

I have a number of Jack´s books, but this is also a personal favorite of mine and the one I had already decided to re-read before going to bed tonight.
Yeah! I read "Enough" twice also. What a genuinely wise man, and which is why Jack was a great man for decades. I found it so refreshing that I read it twice to relearn and absorb all of his wisdom. Bogle shows how people can be content and satisfied with their lives as reflected by many of the philosophers Bogle cited and woven into his philosophy of living.
The subtitle says it all: "True Measures of Money, Business and Life." It’s not just about money, beating the other guy because one has to compete and WIN, it’s how we conduct ourselves as compassionate and committed human beings. Most of us want lives that are uncomplicated, low stress as we work hard to make our unique contributions to society.

Thank you Rick for reminding me of Jack's greatest book. He challenged and confronted head-on with our current unsustainable competitive system where making more money than the other guy/gal is the only measure of a successful life.

First: Rick- a great reflection and thank you for posting it for all to read.....

Second: to JPH- I agree with you- I too am surprised the Fiduciary Rule ( "Bogle Rule") has not-as yet been adopted. Perhaps a tribute we Bogleheads can work on is getting the "Bogle Rule" adopted. As Jack would likely say: "press on, regardless"

One of the many amazing things about Jack was that he kept on message sharing his/our philosophy until his last breath via almost every form of media. He was well connected and well respected so staying the course still managed to resonate even amongst all the other financial noise that the industry thrives on.

We absolutely need more respected and connected members of the financial community to carry that torch, and it certainly won’t be any active fund pundits or investment managers on CNBC.

I saw a “Fisher Investments” advertisement yesterday and it made me gag.

Jack Bogleś introduction to the Enough book is a lyrical reflection on his life history, starting with a tribute to the frugal habits he inherited as a legacy from his Scots grandparents (on both sides of his family.)

Particularly poignant and apt reading right now.

Great article, Rick, thanks for posting. I particularly loved the following quote.
He details the values we should emulate in our business and professional callings and provides thought-provoking life lessons regarding our individual roles in society. Jack examined what it truly means to have "enough" in a world increasingly focused on status and score-keeping.

Most people choose a career in the investment business to make money; Jack Bogle chose to use that career to make a difference. Rest in peace, Jack. You’ve done enough.
Bogle was a lot more than just a financial genius. He was a highly ethical man grounded in his values of seeking the general good rather than just maximally lining his own pockets which is all too common in the financial industry. He was a giant who will be missed.

It’s so good to see this tribute, especially the reference to Jack’s “tireless campaign” to “bring integrity to the financial system.” It reminded me of his appearance on a PBS show in 2007 about reports of private equity firms and hidden ownership of nursing homes. Interviewed by Bill Moyers, Jack said that capitalism should “ultimately serve the consumer” and that “Greed has a role in a capitalistic society, but not the dominant role.” Here is the interview in case anyone is interested:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-4tMkDrYnQ

Also, while reading your tribute Rick, I was nodding in agreement all the way until I got to your line: “Rest in peace, Jack. You’ve done enough.” And I thought, yes, he has done enough, but would he ever have agreed to that?

Could not agree more. Rick Ferri has taught me so much. Very knowledgable and resourceful. Out of all the advisors on our forum over the years Rick has clearly been my favorite. I missed his posts when he was gone and I am thankful that he is back.

I also like the direction Rick has been moving towards over the past couple of years: additional simplicity and less funds.

I remember Mr. Bogle from a talk he gave in New Orleans. I arrived an hour before the event. The lobby was empty except for one person at the registration table and Mr. Bogle. He told me he always came an hour early so he could talk to people. That says it all. RIP.
