Here is what I wrote on the forum after meeting Jack Bogle for the first time at the 2015 Bogleheads Conference:
Taylor Larimore wrote:Bogleheads:
For those of us who were unable to attend, what is the single most important thing you learned at Bogleheads 15.
Thank you and best wishes.
Taylor

"I learned that John Bogle is as incredible a person as I thought he would be.
He is cordial, decent, charming, classically educated, intellectually free-ranging, a strong speaker, wonderfully witty, and he truly delights in being around "his Bogleheads."

He spent a good part of the conference with us - seemed like he was everywhere.
I saw him in the hotel lobby on Wednesday evening - waving to everyone, smiling. His assistant had to pull him out the door.

He spoke to us Thursday morning and he signed books all afternoon - took a long time because he talked personally with each person and made sure that everyone had access to him. He posed for - hmm - probably some 3,000 pictures.

He was with us at our Vanguard visit, working the Boglehead crowd in the large atrium foyer like a father during a bride's wedding reception. He never stopped smiling, he loves people, he posed with everyone over and over again for pictures. He discussed anything and everything and if you asked him a question, he looked at you and gave you his full, considerate attention - with his opinion. I watched as he met an old Vanguard employee he had not seen in years and they discussed their jazz favorites.

On Friday morning he spoke to us again and answered questions posed by Mel. I was in the front and could see he was as happy as a clam at high tide. I think he would have stayed for hours. Well actually, he didn't even leave when he left. He was still in the lobby socializing.

He is such a warm person we felt as if we had known him for years.

The Bogleheads gave him a present - a beautiful walking stick topped with polished brass - and he used it the entire conference.

Taylor, to answer your question, this is the single most important thing I learned at the conference - Mr. Bogle's remarkable investing advice comes from a truly remarkable man."

I love this comment from William Bernstein in the Philly Enquirer piece:

“Jack could have been a multibillionaire on a par with Gates and Buffett,” said William Bernstein, an Oregon investment manager and author of 12 books on finance and economic history. Instead, he turned his company into one owned by its mutual funds, and in turn their investors, "that exists to provide its customers the lowest price. He basically chose to forgo an enormous fortune to do something right for millions of people. I don’t know any other story like it in American business history.”

Condolences to the Bogle family, and thank you, Jack!

Mr. Bogle represented the best values of America - honor, decency, righteousness, and courage.

Ever since I started investing, it was my dream to one day shake his hand and thank him personally for the education I got from his writings and books - my family is better off because of that learning. Sadly, that will never happen.

Thank you, sir. I (like millions of other investors) will be forever grateful for everything you did.

A little over 10 years ago, I stumbled my way onto the Bogleheads forum by way of a mention on the old “get rich slowly” blog, when I was mired in debt and had very little understanding of the investment world. From that point on, my life would never be the same, as I discovered the absolute treasure trove of this community that had sprung up based on the philosophies of Jack Bogle. My life today is absolutely better because of this wonderful community, which was only made possible because of Jack.

Rest In Peace Mr. Bogle. You will most certainly be missed.

I sincerely hope the family of Mr.Bogle’s heart doner are aware of how profoundly their loved one impacted the world by giving Mr. Bogle a second chance. Millions of people are so much better off because John Bogle lived. He was a humble giant of a man.

I always admired Mr Bogle in his interviews with his direct answers. He always spoke the truth, consistently countering the mainstream financial media bias. Frequently the interviewer would cringe at Mr Bogle's answers since Mr Bogle was so direct. He was always a reassuring voice. I am going to try to remember to periodically review his basic message since he is no longer here to remind me in articles or interviews. Very sad day.

Many years ago, I bid and won a lunch with Jack Bogle. I posted my experiences here.

Thinking back on this, back then I was single, and now married. His advice holds true on so many levels. Another thing I didn't fully appreciate, my winning auction bid was the minimum bid $1,000, in fact I was the only one who bid, compared to Warren Buffet's lunch which auction goes to the 'millions'.

Jack didn't have to give his time, but he did so out of the generosity of his heart a Vanguard employee that was involved in a local non-profit. The world needs more Jack Bogle's.

I owe so very much to John Bogle...the modest monetary wealth (enough) which I have managed to attain because of what he created; what I learned from him about mutual funds and the market; my peace of mind knowing that I was never going to be smarter than the market.

Even more, I appreciate him. His humble manner and gracious interactions with us was, and will always be, a model for each of us in our daily lives.

Indeed, R.I.P. John Bogle.

Part of what makes me sad with Mr. Bogle's passing is that he is an unsung hero to many. My brother, who has bought in to low-cost index investing to some extent, does not suffer this loss. I can't tell my brother how sad this makes me, the loss of a true working man's hero--perhaps only a notch below that of Martin Luther King and his ilk--without him thinking I'm a little bit nutty.

This is a private loss that I can't truly share with anyone close to me.

I've been in shock/sadness/grief since hearing the news early this evening.
As nisiprius said upthread, no words.... : o

So instead, I've been sitting in shock and watching the posts from those stronger than I stack up here. Well over 500 posts in less than 8 hours thus far. SoAnyway, I'm ready to try some words. Please forgive my weak attempt.

First, to the Bogle family: My sincerest and most heartfelt condolences. May the many news reports and posts on this forum (and elsewhere) of Jack's enormous impact bring you comfort in your time of unimaginable grief and sorrow.

Next, to those associated with this forum who knew Jack well: Mr. Larimore, Mr. Lindauer, nisiprius et al., I can only imagine what you must be experiencing. My deepest sympathy. To all of you, you do Jack proud. Like him, not only in what you say (which is important), but what you DO (have done, and continue to do). Please take solace in knowing that due to your tireless efforts devoted to carrying out Mr. Bogle's legacy over the years, on this forum and elsewhere, you share at the receiving end of the outpouring of gratitude you see here. Without your efforts, we wouldn't be in a position to express it or to have benefited. A special shout out to LadyGeek and your team of admins on this sad, sad day, who are keeping this site up-and-running when the server is understandably overwhelmed. I know you all are putting aside your own grief to attend to our need to express ours. "Press on, regardless"? Yes, you are all doing just that. And I for one am very grateful. And I'm certain that if you believe in a heaven, Mr. Bogle is quite pleased with your efforts as he watches from his current vantage-point.

Finally, in my mind, I would love to believe that had I been in Jack's position way back when, I'd have taken the harder path he chose. As other BHs have said way better than I, he could have taken the easy way, "gone along and got along", and been far wealthier. But he CHOSE otherwise. Because he cared about US. The existing order of things at the time offended his sensibilities of what was right, fair and just towards folks like us. So he pressed on.

He was ridiculed for his ideas early on, but he pressed on regardless. He fought mighty battles once the "establishment" who earlier pooh-poohed him really clued in to the threat that his beliefs/values/character posed to the established order. And he pressed on regardless. Why? Because he believed it was the right thing to do. I would love to believe that i'd have done the same. Sadly, I can't say for sure. And I'm sure I'm not alone.

Mr. Bogle, I am so grateful. And a bit ashamed - that I'm not sure I'd have possessed the courage, selflessness, talents to have made the choices you did. Candidly, sir, they broke the mold the day you were born. On the plus side, part of my sadness today was due to my thoughtlessly taking for granted that you'd be here forever. (shame on me) But today's showing on this forum tells me that you're not gone. You will live forever. Right here. Just in a different way than I'd imagined. Thank you.
