Fund Name: **Randomize!**

Our boutique stock-picking firm guarantees a fully random experience and complete unpredictability.

Just think: An octopus can predict the SuperBowl winner by changing color between just "1" and "2" -- a simple binary comparison.

If that's the case, then just think about how much better our random number picker must be -- it goes all the way from 1 to 3000! That's three thousand times more than "1", and a full one thousand five hundred times better than "2". Experts don't want you to know about this one weird trick!

Long Stocks

SBCF - Seacoast Banking Cp
BSRR - Sierra Bancorp
CRM - SalesForce.com

Short Stocks

ABG - Asbury Automotive Group Inc
NVR - NVR Inc

Upside Tiger-blood would like to apologize to its investors in 2018 for the -12.50% performance, but make no mistake, we are winning and it's all Upside from here. Winning is in the mind, it's only reality that is in the process of catching up.

Just a suggestion. In looking at the 2018 contest, the top 5 winners did not pick a single stock LONG. This means that to have the best chance of winning with these particular rules, you would only pick a short (or two), and do not declare any long stocks. I cannot contribute this purely to chance alone as there is not a single person in the top 5 who picked any stock LONG.

I meant to post this only in the 2019 thread, not the 2018 thread.
Down year overall so that makes sense. If only you knew when those would occur.

Thank you to everyone who participated so far. For everyone else, you still have til Monday morning to pick your favorite winners and losers. If you pick them off the link in OP, you’ll even be sure to have eligible ones :).

Speaking of eligible, I reviewed the funds so far and found a few issues, so if your fund appears below, please see my notes and address the ineligible selection. In general, you can either replace the choice with an eligible one or remove it and keep the rest of your selections unchanged - whatever you prefer. Thanks and good luck.

My Fund Manager hopes that Tesla goes way down this year so we can back up our hedge fund owned pickup and load up on lots more shares. But she suspects that will then rebound and of course in this contest December 31 is only date that counts. And I know better than to argue with a successful track record, but do hope that can pick up a lot more TSLA shares at lower cost this year so will not be disappointed either way. Good luck.

It sounded from their fund name that this might be intentional. If so, I don’t see any problem with placing a “double bet” on AAPL if that was their goal compared to their other stock positions. It hasn’t come up before, but I don’t see anything definitive in the rules to say the stocks you pick need to be distinct.

I was also wondering that - it's a very interesting strategy.

(To be clear, I'm just a contest entrant giving an opinion and will defer rules interpretation to the contest managers.)

TEVA is a foreign ADR, Israeli-based, and hence is not in the Russell. While I share your sentiment on NBEV, they are also sadly not an eligible stock to short this year. Please remove these two and if you wish, replace them with others.

Tanelorn Capital: Better Lucky Than Good
Our concentrated portfolios are designed to debunk that myth that short selling is risky and remind potential investors that no matter how cheap a stock is, there is always 100% to be made on the way to zero.

Short:
SHLDQ - Sears Holdings (last price $0.30)

It's not as imaginative pick and it was the same one that one last year's contest, but in investing, you don't get paid for being clever and we at Tanelorn Capital think we know a fat pitch when we see one so we're going all in betting against Eddie this year. We know some may take issue with our unusual approach so we also offer a more diversified short-bias alternative portfolio for those seeking a more conservative approach to short selling:

Short:
SHLDQ - Sears Holdings
SHLDQ - Sears Holdings
SHLDQ - Sears Holdings

Just kidding, but that's the kind of diversification you see from time to time... long the stock, short the puts, long the calls so it's diversified right? Here's our alternative short basket for this year:

Short:
MDXG - MiMedx Group
WATT - Energous Corp
ZN - Zion Oil & Gas

Honorary mention to FCEL and PHIIK as possible candidates on our "short" list, and while we think their stocks have serious downside risks including possible bankruptcy, we do prefer our short plays to lack any meaningful shareholders equity or a viable business.

The deadline for the contest has passed and the starting prices will be today's closing price, Jan 7th. For those who corrected their picks in time, I have updated your positions. For those who did not reply to my above comments, I removed the ineligible ones and left the remaining picks. I should have a spreadsheet ready shortly for us to track the contest.

Good luck to All!

Here is the spreadsheet with the current contest status:

Current standings - 2019 hedge fund contest

Please double check and see if your fund looks correct. If you click on the name of the fund, you should be able to see the performance of your various picks since the start of the year (which isn't quite the same as the start of the contest, but close enough).

My shorts (FB, CMG, JNJ) don't appear to have made it on the spreadsheet. Thanks for doing this!

I'm having trouble with clicking. My fund doesn't display anything, and neither do others.
However, every now and again, I get a chart opening for SPY, and I can't replicated that everytime; I don't know why SPY chart pops up sometimes, but not others.

Thanks for the note, mokaThought. I fixed your fund and a couple other small typos I’d made. Hopefully everything is correct, but if not, just let me know.

See if this link works for you - it’s what I get when I click on your fund name, which compares SPY to ILMN (your sole pick).

Something is wrong. The stock I picked to short is up 5% and I appear to be in last place. Clearly a spreadsheet malfunction, please fix!

Thanks.

My apologies.

Upon first look, the chart seems to show only SPY, so I didn't notice the "fine print" lower down.

The MOXIE Fund is certainly off to a terrific start. NOT! :D
