At the moment, only 2 funds in our portfolio provided a positive return to us this year: VFSUX (short term bond) and SAMBX (bank loans).

Ah, I didn't consider CDs or I-Bonds in my original reply. They both beat VFSUX/SAMBX.

My best monetary investment for 2018 was installing a basement egress window to change my rental house from a 3 bedroom to a 4 bedroom. The increase in rent equates to a 20% annual return on the cost of putting in the window.

My best investment ever, though, is the $40.71 on dinner for our first date more than five years ago. Without that, I wouldn't be spending the rest of my life with her and our 1 year old baby. What a great return for 40 bucks!

Our best investment was relocation. We had been in analysis-paralysis mode for quite a while and finally pulled the trigger this year. Couldn't be more happier. Breathing fresh air every day and watching the magnificent Rockies just outside our window ... priceless!

The TSP G-Fund is the only investment up for the year. I wish the DW and my federal careers had allowed more time for TSP additions.

Unrealized losses on everything else amounts to about 2 years salary and 4 years expenses. If the stock sell-off continues for much longer, I'll hit the 40% max for bonds allowed by my mental IPS and will start buying stock mutual funds in my 401k after years of buying only bonds in a futile attempt to hit age minus 25; now minus 20 (my only response to the turmoil other than TLH).

That's a meaningless stat for a CD you intend to hold to maturity, and unless the FDIC goes bust, it's as safe as you can get. I wish there was an option to turn off the mark to market of the brokered CDs at Vanguard because it is so irrelevant.

Also, a handful of bottles of Rougeard cab franc. Bought for 69 each in Jan and sold for about $169 apiece in Dec.

My best investment for 2018 without question was upping my savings rate by another 5% of my income in my Roth contributions.

My main fund is only down -2.5% after Xmas Eve YTD so I guess that's not too bad either.

Vanguard Short Term Bond Fund

I put two years expenses into the fund in preparation for retirement in a few weeks. It’s up a few hundred bucks in the last 4 months (dividend reinvest).

MOV (Movado, the watch company). Held for 11 months, sold in June for a 114% gain. It was a value play that worked out.

Not very Bogleheadish, I know, but there you are. It was part of a broader more diversified portfolio that overall for the year is doing just about as well as everyone else’s is right now.

My best performing current holding is 5 year TIPS.

My I-bonds have been positive all year, like they pretty much always are, so they are always a good investment when everything else is down. I also topped up on some gold mining stocks and a Brazilian ETF a few months ago, which were both really bad for the first 9 months or so, but are each up 20% since the S&P's 20% drop. So in these last few months diversification has worked well. My EM value funds are also only down 10% in the last 3 months compared to the 20% drop in the S&P. YTD there is not much difference in performance among them all, they just took different paths to get here.

Of course most of these diversifiers were much worse the first 9 months of 2018, particularly the gold miners and Brazilian funds (down 30-40% at one point). It's only in the last few months that the outperformance has shown up. Overall, though, I don't think any of my investments are positive on the year, with the exception of I-bonds and cash.

My business. Doubled my gross, tripled my net, quadrupled my net worth.

Hands down, this has been the best financial year of my life. In fact, I seriously doubt it will ever get better, in raw dollars. 2019 will likely be a tiny bit worse, and I’m planning to semi-retire in 2020 at age 42.

Best:
Time with my family
Myself, raise at work, bonuses, overtime
New rental building, short sale, refinanced after purchase
Bank bonuses, paid for a family vacation
High APY savings accounts
Regular contributions to 401(k), despite current valuations

Worst:
Buying GE on Robinhood for "fun".

Withdrawing from taxable in August to pay cash for our Q7. In addition to avoiding $6-10k in interest on the loan, we're $8-10k ahead on the money we took out because it missed the Sept-Dec slump.

Best financial investment: TIAA Traditional (stable value) that paid over 3% guaranteed in which we have about 20% of our portfolio.

Best non-financial: Eating healthier and more consistent exercise that helped me drop about 20 pounds (mostly fat).

Be wary of reports of annualized return because annualizing a 2-day 5% return like my SPSM bought on 12/24 and sold on 12/26 gives a ridiculously high annualized return even though the return is 5%.
