What was your best investment in 2018?

Post by ge1 »

In a year where almost all asset classes have seen declines - what was your best investment?

For me it was - by a large margin - private lending to a couple we know well who flip houses and we earn 8% on the loans. Underlying property serves as collateral.

And we sold our rental property with a nice gain in Q2.

I suppose my best investment this year would be... investing this year.

Buy low. Sell high. Be patient. Stay the course. Live long and prosper.

1.) Neck surgery: high risk/high reward for future decades of positive health. (Analogous to buying low on EM? Lots of pain, but hopefully worth it.)

2.) TIAA Traditional

I switched my 401K out of high fee managed funds into Ultra low fee index funds. My time here on this forum has been a great investment as well.

Paid off my mortgage. Put nearly $50k into it this calendar year. While it was only costing me 2.75% it will be a huge investment in lowering my overall stress level.

best investment was investing in MYSELF rather than saving some of those dollars. Much better ROI than the S&P in current or future.

Converting some equities to about 250K to CDs earning 2.5--3.5% spread out over the next five years (getting ready for retirement next year). Left other aggressively-invested buckets untouched...will tap those much later.

TIAA Real Estate - up 4.8% YTD thru November.

Also have a fixed annuity (not annuitized) with Protective Life that pays a guaranteed minimum 4.5%

Also have two flavors of TIAA Traditional yielding a blended average 4.0%

My equities (approx 45% of my portfolio) are in negative territory this year.

First the real, depressing answer: I bonds.

Then the fun answer: did a pro-bono project and am now consulting in a brand-new field with more work lined up in 2019.

Health insurance premiums. My wife had cancer and needed two surgeries. Total out of pocket: $0

My best investment ever, though, is the $40.71 on dinner for our first date more than five years ago. Without that, I wouldn't be spending the rest of my life with her and our 1 year old baby. What a great return for 40 bucks!

We took our last family vacation for a few years and had a really nice, relaxing time. We went to Vancouver and Seattle over spring break and saw some cool stuff and ate some very good food. It was a great investment as have been all the trips we have taken as a family over the years.

We are transitioning into retirement this spring and will likely hold off on any trips until our daughter graduates from college in two years.

Wife went to nursing school. All in $5,000 per year tuition and fees et cetera, and as soon as she graduated this spring she made as much as me but with two more weeks off per year and better health insurance. Ka-ching!

The Thrift Savings Plan, essentially a 401(k) for US Federal and military employees, has the G Fund, a fixed income fund that returned 2.8% for the year, while most bond funds are down 2% for the year. I’m thankful that most of my fixed income allocation is in the G Fund.
