year-end capital gains distributions

Post by ladycat » Wed Nov 07, 2018 10:32 pm

I read this article saying many funds were announcing their year-end capital gains distributions. https://www.morningstar.com/articles/89 ... rs-in.html
Does anyone know where to find this information for a particular fund?

If your search, “Fund Name year-end distributions”, you may find the answer. When running this search on the Vanguard website it shows the actual 2017 distribution amounts and dates. The 2018 distribution is likely to be done on similar dates but you’ll need to wait a few more days to get the planned amount.

I found some of them by googling: "2018 expected mutual fund distributions"

Add the name of the company offering the fund to see if their funds' distributions are posted yet.

Although I didn't find end-of-the year distributions for Vanguard yet, this page shows the most recent distribution for each of their funds:

I thought it would be on the fund research or info page but didn't think to Google it! I found it for Fidelity (which is what I was looking for).

Thanks!

Note that the Fidelity page only shows expected capital gains distributions even though it is labeled "year end distributions". Expected dividend distributions aren't shown, so don't be surprised when you get them. I think at some point Fidelity will add a dividend column to that table, but I don't remember when that happens.

If I remember correctly the Fidelity estimates for the fund I own weren't particularly accurate last year.

I was a little disappointed to see year-end (or, for some funds, their 4th quarter) dividends missing from this year's list. They were there in recent years. And they included qualified versus non-qualified, also handy in tax planning. I also agree that the estimates were sometimes pretty far off from what eventually got paid out.

Vanguard provides a schedule 3 times.

11/12/18 - List of Vanguard mutual funds and ETFs that are expected to distribute taxable capital gains, with scheduled record dates and preliminary capital gains estimates, as of October 31, 2018. Estimates of year-end capital gains for applicable Vanguard ETFs®, broken down by short-term, long-term, and total gains. Estimates of total capital gains per share for all applicable remaining funds.

12/10/18 - Updated estimates of year-end capital gains for applicable Vanguard mutual funds and ETFs, broken down by short-term, long-term, and total gains, plus estimated income and qualified dividend income percentages, as of December 31, 2018.

12/17/18 - Updated estimated breakdown of distributions for Vanguard Managed Payout Fund, as well as estimates for any additional year-end distributions for this fund.

The estimates provided on 11/12/18 are ballpark. I found on some funds they can be different by a noticeable percentage. The 12/10/18 estimates are much, much closer. I use those to make any end of year decisions that I need to execute during the year. I then closely watch the distributions because some of mine happen as late as 12/27 depending on the calendar.
