This is one really weird yield curve. We have 2 inversions for today, 11/24!

But given that the bond market is broken, we probably shouldn't be trying to read too much into it.

Anyone plan to load up? :D I have no idea why their stock was soaring to begin with.

At this rate, I don't think we can hit my 5400 year end target. I thought it was possible till 2 weeks ago--1000 pts each week of the year. But I think I accept that it won't happen now.
I wouldn't recommend touching JWN. They might go the Sear's route.
I don't think this can happen. Sears was run into the ground. Nordstrom still has a lot of family ownership.

Nordstrom has good management and I think a good strategy. They won't clobber Amazon but they'll come out on the other side. They are gobbling up tech talent from Amazon, so you can see where they're pivoting.

Soaring even higher. Even though Nikkei is languishing.

Though I indulge in it, trying to make predictions from futures is like looking in a fun house mirror and trying to describe reality.

Black Friday is now a worldwide event. So I think US companies will make good money even if the US retail does poorly. That bodes well for the next few days.

This thread is about US stocks, so I was focusing only on those. There are articles saying Black Friday numbers were bad and going by traffic and mall crowds locally, I can believe that. Normally that would not bode well for the market on Monday. But I think given worldwide Black Friday deals (that's a first) I think sales will be stronger than ever.

Well, the overnight reality distortion field was turned off, and the soaring was very nice. S&P up more than 1%, NASDAQ leading with even greater gains.

Not complaining, but the premarket gap-up didn't make sense when international went down hard (like Nikkei -1.7%).

With 20/20 hindsight it is hard to call this a taper. More like a little early morning overexuberance followed by a small readjustment.

I bought the dip this morning on Disney at $146.29, one of my three funny money stocks (the other two being Amazon and Google.) Jim Cramer's investing club did the same thing, coincidentally. He got a better price than I did: 75 shares at $144.82 for his charitable trust.

"Cramer’s Investing Club: We’re looking long term and buying more Disney on the dip"

(Now...officially...gonna take a break from all investment related activities e.g. monitoring and messing around with funny money! I was supposed to do that today, but failed miserably.)

From CNBC:

Fed Chair Jerome Powell believes that the omicron variant of Covid-19 and a recent rise in coronavirus cases pose a threat to the U.S. economy.

Worries over the new variant could “reduce people’s willingness to work in person, which would slow progress in the labor market and intensify supply-chain disruptions,” he said in prepared remarks.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen will join Powell on Tuesday in testifying before the Senate Banking Committee on Tuesday.

Perhaps markets will read this as a delayed or prolonged taper, and perhaps pushed the interest rate "liftoff" even further out.

What's with the seesaw? Futures were up earlier and now they are way down.

If I do some last minute cyber Monday shopping, would that help?

Edit: I just made a purchase for about $65. Between that and lostdog going to the gym, we should be covered for a green close tomorrow.

Everything else? Look at Treasuries. Everyone screaming about inflation but there doesn't seem to be any upward pressure on yields.

I sold all my ARKK and ARKW after several months of holding and watching them just drop in value. Put the money back into the S&P500 index.

I bought into the Cathie Woods hype and regret it.

I still have a profit in my shares of ARKK, but it has shrunk so much that I am considering just dumping what gains I have, paying the small taxes, and just investing the proceeds into VTI. I don't really see ARKK doing well in a rising rate environment, but in the long run, it may be a fine fund. But much more uncertainty than just owning VTI
