[New Vanguard website layout starting Saturday, August 11]

Post by am » Sat Aug 11, 2018 12:42 pm

I am seeing a new layout of my online accounts. There is a notable absence of expense ratios and the mutual funds and etfs are lumped into one without subheadings. Anyone else seeing this? After some clicking on the site, it goes back to the old format. I wonder if they did this to deemphasize fees given the recent fidelity changes?

I don't see any changes in our accounts. Everything looks the same.

You talking about within the Holdings tab? Yes, it's changed. The funds are in different order now with a different look and a new download button.

Yes. No expense ratios and etfs and funds are lumped. But if you click around the site and go back to holdings, it reverts to the old format.

I’m not sure what page you are looking at.
The home page called ‘Welcome’ has a very prominent box showing ETF’s & mutual funds that you can choose.
I tapped each of these choices to see the lists and the ER’s are shown.

Maybe this is a stepped roll out? I'm not seeing any difference.

Same for me. Just opened the account and the expense ratios all showed as in the past.

Not to sound paranoid but I think you're right. This is what I see, too, although I probably would not have noticed it (!). It was always sort of my "to-do" list when I looked at the ERs of my non-VG, non-index holdings -- waiting for corrections to swap those into the "right" funds with minimal tax implications. Now I don't have that mental "flag."

Edit: This was if I click on an individual account from the "Overview" screen...but if I select "Balances & Holdings" tab under "My Accounts" in the toolbar, I see the same old thing with the ERs.

And their portfolio watch still lists the old fideltiy index fund expense ratios. Makes me wonder if this is an intentional move.

I would be shocked if they could make design changes to the website that quickly after Fidelity rolled out their new funds. And what's the utility in hiding a 0.04% expense ratio? From people who already own the fund?

It's so annoying. The concise format that used to occupy 1/3 of a window now fills the entire window.

TIAA's changes are worse. Can't find a **** thing.

Anyone noticing Vanguard website changes today Saturday August 11

Post by Paul Romano » Sat Aug 11, 2018 1:18 pm

[Thread merged into here, see below. --admin LadyGeek]

I'm noticing changes for the first time when logging on today.

Under Accounts and Balances my Vanguard Mutual Funds are no longer seperate from my stock and ETF holdings.

They are all now mixed together.

I liked the old view better. Seperate breakdown for Vanguard Funds and stocks and ETFs.

They are also now alphabetical by symbol which I find a bit confusing.

They use to be alphabetical by the actual name of the holding.

I'm not that familiar with the symbols. The symbols are now more dominant then the names.

Anyone else noticing these changes?

I think they should announce when they are making changes to the website.

Nothing new on mine. I never noticed but I think mine have always been in symbol order. I don't have so many holdings that the order matters.

I always go to "Balances and Holdings", I don't think I have ever clicked on the "Holdings" tab.

"Balances and Holdings" show ERs, no change to that, I don't believe. In fact I used the page this morning to calculate the total ER cost of our Vanguard investments.

Mine has not changed either, but I’ve always had a brokerage account since I only opened it a couple years ago. Maybe the older accounts are being “updated”?

I see some changes too, but it's possible they were only for a subset of the users. Pretty standard in IT deployment.

Yes, and I agree. Beyond that, it seems they are still in some sort of transition. If you navigate around enough, you can still land on the old style web pages. Seems a little amateur for such a huge firm.

The new layout (if it is finished) is cleaner, but it offers less detail.

Did you have individual accounts for those funds? They were moving everyone to the brokerage platform, might account for the changes you see.

yep. i got an email about it. something about "new personalized account page" (it's also in the message center once you get in). I wasn't sure if it was trying to convert me to brokerage or what so I canceled out (they're pushing hard to convert to brokerage at the main page). I attempted the secon log in and it took me to the normal page.

For those who went through the "new personalized account page" what are the rest of us missing?

Thanks Lady Geek for merging duplicate thread. Somehow I submitted 2x in error.

Also missing with the new format is the expense ratio. Information I found useful.

I did not receive any notification regarding the changes.

I noticed at about 11pm Pacific Time last night.

I also don't like the changes and hope it's not the final rendition.

Looks like a simple cosmetic change. I don't notice any new functionality other than the download button and I wouldn't be surprised if that was already available.

This is awful. Everything is now in gigantic 18-point type, and the layout is so huge that on my 1600x900 display--with the window as large as it will go, which is 825 pixels high--it takes eight scrolls to see everything. In other words the layout is designed for a screen that is over 6,400 pixels = about 64 inches = over five feet high.

Don't anybody dare call this "adaptive web design."

I wasn't annoyed as much when I checked the balances over time. Apparently, they don't allow IRR (Internal Rate of Return, a.k.a. "personal rate of return") for anything less than 1 year (YTD). OK, fair enough.

I have agent authorization (POA) for my Mom. The last time I tried, I wasn't able to check her account's IRR. This time, I could.

For Vanguard, this is an improvement.

I visited this morning and the view was "defaulted" to the new layout. It is terrible for printing and the info is clipped in some displays. I am definitely not excited by the csv download to Excel.

Fortunately, the Balances and Holdings page is still looks right, otherwise my monthly printout will be a whole lot less fun.

Rats! More download friendly, less printer friendly. I could get the info printed on 2 sheets, (or 1 sheet for vital info,) now it takes up 3 with less information and more white space!

You can look at distributions easily with choices of ytd, quarters, etc. That seemed different.

For me this has been happening for several weeks. Very strange. I don't like the "new" look, and assume it's an error of some sort since it does revert eventually.

New Vanguard website layout

.
Although my logon did not change until today, my wife's logon was changed by Thursday August 9, 2018.

Like the change in the Welcome page, they have made things more compatible with tablets and phones, leaving a layout that works well on PCs.

They seem to forget that many people like using PCs for financial access.

They also have changed the order to be alphabetically by fund symbols instead of alphabetically by fund names making it harder to find things for people who do not trade often enough to memorize symbols.

I didn't stop at the first screen. I also looked at the "balances and holdings" and the "cost basis" screens. What screen(s) should I be looking at?

The view is different depending on how you access you account balances.

My Accounts -> Balances and Holdings = the old view

of

My Accounts -> Holdings (2nd tab of 5 across top) = the alternate view

My Accounts -> Holdings (2nd tab of 5 across top) = the alternate view
I don't think this is new as I've seen this for some time.
I seem to have new tabs for Holdings and Performance.

Interestingly, I don't think the Performance tab is working. for one thing it appears to not correctly include my Vanguard 401(k) (actually probably the rollover from my legacy IRA into the 401(k) and it seems to confuse monthly vs. cumulative and starting dates for the range. Seems overall busted. The legacy one works fine on all of these points.

The ER is still there in one click to the Prices and Returns section under holdings (2 clicks in the new view.)

I just logged in and see no change to the display. Do the folks who see changes have the old mutual fund accounts or the brokerage accounts?
Just an FYI; my log-in shows all our accounts, mine, ours, hers all on the main page. Some are brokerage some are not. I have not seen a change to the first screen, ever (at least what I can still remember).
I didn't stop at the first screen. I also looked at the "balances and holdings" and the "cost basis" screens. What screen(s) should I be looking at?
I looked at balances and holdings also. Same thing I have always seen.

If they retain the Balances and Holding view I'll be happy - otherwise its like being forced to wear new ill-fitting shoes every week for the next year. :annoyed
