What is your one favorite Fidelity Fund??

Post by Bronco Billy » Fri Jun 29, 2018 11:23 am

I really like Vanguard but @ work i have a Fidelity 401 retirement plan that i can stay in when i retire. I have opened their Brokerage link account that gives me more access to better funds than the 24 available.

I am sure not all will like this but there are no rules or guidelines. Just your favorite fund.

Thanks,

My favorite would be the one with the highest expense ratio and highest profit margin for Fidelity, because those customers will subsidize the low cost index funds that I invest in.

I have both a taxable account and an IRA at Fidelity. I've invested in Fidelity's FSTVX (Fidelity Total Market Index Fund Premium Class) fund in both accounts.

+1 - had this one for years and it did well (Beat market for many years).
I shifted to Contrafund for a number of years and Low-Priced-Stock among a few other active funds that seemed to do well
Now I am a Boglehead so only have their index funds.

FSTVX (total stock market) I guess would be my favorite now.

Doesn’t their total international fund exclude EM?

I set up a 403 with Fidelity and Vanguard

Post by Socrates » Fri Jun 29, 2018 12:02 pm

in the late 90s with a school district I worked for.

I had a lot of money and Low Price Stock FLPSX and it did very well and also Select Technology FSPTX.

I have cashed most of that out (still have a little of both) and purchased index funds through Fidelity:

SP500, emerging market and small blend.

I guess I could roll that into my Vangaurd 403b right? I just kept that half of the money in Fidelity and switched to their index funds which are also very low cost.

I have Fidelity accounts. I have only 2 investments in those accounts, so I suppose one of those 2 would have to be my "favorite"? LOL!

They are VBR and FBIDX.

There is no way either of those two should be anybody else's favorite Fidelity funds.

FSTVX for US stocks
FSIVX for international stocks

Those seemed the best stock index fund options in terms of diversification and ER, at least when I went over all available options 1.5 years ago.

Fidelity Contra Fund. It has been one of my largest holdings for 25 years. I have sold off everything else and moved into index ETFs but my capital gain in Fido kills me every time I sell some. Last time I sold some I had to pay AMT and that 2.x% medicare tax.

Contra is one of the only mutual funds with long term performance exceeding the index. It is heavy into FANG so when and if those stocks roll over the fund will finally under perform unless W. Danoff and sell the stocks and move into something else before everyone else. For decades he has been able to make these kinds of moves but it could all end tomorrow.

If I could get out of AMT and capital gains I would move into index funds.

If it must be one single fund, the one I would choose today--the fund family was not available when I was in the 401(k) plan--would be the Fidelity Freedom Index Income Fund, FIFKX ( ) FIKFX, expense ratio 0.17%. It's awfully conservative, but I'm retired. You might want something else in that series, if it is available to you; institutional class if you can get it. These funds are portfolios of low-cost index funds, and in my opinion the expense ratios are low enough.

When I actually worked for an employer with a Fidelity-managed 401(k) plan, the Freedom Index series did not exist. I felt that I need more than one fund to match my desired allocation. I used something resembling a three-fund portfolio of Fidelity Total Market Index (FTSMX), Fidelity Diversified International Stock (FDIVX), Fidelity US Bond Index (FBIDX).

Nowadays I would probably choose Fidelity Total International Index Fund (FTIPX) in preference to FDIVX.

From the wiki:

Fidelity Total International Index Fund (FTIPX): Tracks MSCI ACWI (All Country World Index) ex USA Investable Market Index, includes small caps.

Fidelity International Index Fund (FSIIX/FSIVX): Tracks MSCI EAFE Index (Morgan Stanley Capital International Europe, Australasia, Far East Index).

I use FSEMX extended market for my 401k contributions since I do not have the brokeragelink option. It’s .1% expense ratio compared to fstmx total market expense ratio of .09%. So for an extra basis point, I get a 15 year annual return of 11.24% vs FSTMX return of 9.66%.

Other fidelity funds I use in my own portfolio are fpmax emerging markets and fsrvx REITs. Both have been good to me.
Mac 4 fund portfolio: 45% US small cap value (IJS, VBR), 40% Emerging Markets (IEMG, VWO, FPMAX), 10% long term US treasuries (TLT), 5% US REITS (VNQ)

For me it is FHIFX, Fidelity Focused High Income Fund. It invests in corporate bonds rated B/BB/BBB, giving me enough monthly dividends to support my early retirement without having to invest in much lower rated bonds. In my IRA I have a lot in FUSVX, the S&P 500 index fund.

FSPHX, Fidelity Select Health Care Portfolio. But I still own my original 30 year old position, so I'm somewhat biased.

I've been with Fidelity Four in One Index (FFNOX) since the launch in '99 and appreciate the 8 basis point current charge. Not bad for Fido and saves me a lot of rebalancing time. I do have Vanguard ETFs and some other Fido index funds to fill out the missing elements like emerging, short term bonds, international small, etc. New money goes into Total World ETF at V., however, as my favorite fund.

Given that you stated there are no rules, I'm still going to break your unwritten rule. I have multiple fidelity accounts. My favorite in my Roth is fstvx, my favorite fund in my taxable at fidelity is itot even though it is not a fidelity fund. Fstvx in table Drove me crazy so I started using itot.

I have one account at Fidelity: a small 401a from my first job that I cannot rollover. Its sole holding is FXAIX, the Institutional Premium version of Fidelity's S&P 500 fund. I like it because the ER is just 0.012%. That's even cheaper than my 401k's Vanguard S&P 500 collective investment trust.

That depends on one's tax bracket, but triceratop's tax-efficiency spreadsheet has the gory details. For my situation, last year FSTVX would have been 30% more expensive than ITOT (0.46% total cost versus 0.36%).

I dont really have a problem with the 24 funds. It just gives me the option to SO many other funds. There are some good ones and have made decent money with them but half of them are the Vanguard Retirement funds.

I am invested in:
Dodge & Cox Stock Fund DODGX
Fidelity® Contrafund® -FCNKX
Vanguard Target Retirement 2020

They also have 2 bond, 2 small, 2 mid cap and a couple others.

My plan is to leave the Company 401 in place when i retire. My favorite fund is VFIAX. I have enjoyed the responses to this thread. So far i have gotten the help from over 30 FA without any cost. :happy I have looked at almost everyone's favorite and would not be surprised i invest in a couple of them.

FFNOX Fidelity four in one.

I wish they would come out with a range of "lifestrategy" funds but this one is pretty good if a high stock allocation is what you want. I prefer it to the vanguard equivalent because of the lower international exposure.

While a 30% difference sounds like a big number, it is in fact a .10% difference between two funds that each had total returns in excess of 21% last year.

Just to reiterate what many others have said: Fidelity Four-In-One Index Fund (FFNOX) ER 0.11%

Although I am also invested in:
Fidelity Total Stock Market Index Fund Premium Class (FSTVX) ER 0.035%
Fidelity Total International Market Index Fund Premium Class (FTIPX) ER 0.10%
Fidelity Total Bond Market Index Fund Premium Class (FSITX) ER 0.045%

I don’t have any specific favorite, but I like there “non-enhanced” index funds for building simple index portfolios.

My biggest holding is the Fidelity Total Stock Market Index fund, Premium Class. I have been very pleased with it.

Nowadays I would probably choose Fidelity Total International Index Fund (FTIPX) in preference to FDIVX.
I suppose it is still on topic if I ask...

Why FTIPX instead of FSGDX? The former tracks the MSCI ACWI IMI ex USA index and the latter tracks the MSCI ACWI ex USA index. The expense ratios are the same. I just learned about the difference because of your post (we own some FSGDX). Is this the same as the S&P 500 versus Total Market discussions?

I believe FTIPX has small-cap exposure, so it's very modestly more diversified.

That said, their top 10 holdings are identical, and they both fit into the same style box - so I suspect performance is pretty much equivalent. There are a few threads on here about both funds.
