We don't get too many opportunities to express our appreciation, so we'll take advantage of this one. By creating Vanguard and pioneering the commercial index fund, not only have you saved my spouse and me several hundred thousand dollars in fund expenses over the years, but it appears you've reduced the fees of the entire managed fund industry (chart below).

His contributions to the investing world are many and others have, of course, touched on them. What I'd like to add is he was one of the first financial writers I read whose writing was so engaging, I was interested in learning more, not simply for getting my own investing going, but because he made the topic itself interesting to read about.
