"Ladies First" did not meet expectations in 2017 and I have directed my marketing team to refocus our efforts and set priorities. After considerable research at minimal cost, we proudly introduce the same product with a new name.

For 2018, we are going forward with economically sound best practices. To foster team building, we have selected a single fund.

Name: All in the same boat

6. The universe from which to choose is the Russell 3000 http://www.ftserussell.com/files/suppor ... ssell-3000. If you pick shares not on this list and it's not caught and corrected before the deadline, your portfolio will be disqualified.
Please double-check. The file I downloaded is for 2016, as it was named: ru3000_membershiplist_20160627.pdf (2016-06-27)

The master copy is here: Russell Reconstitution | FTSE Russell

Near the bottom of the page, under "Recon resources and materials" --> Click on "2017 Index membership lists (PDFs)", then Russell 3000 which will download as ru3000_membershiplist_20170626.pdf (2017-06-26)

I think you want the 2017 list.
I posted the same up-thread. Hopefully, between the two of us, Tanelorn and BackOfTheNet will see the update and move to the 2017 list. Also, hopefully those who already made their hedge funds will double-check their picks. The Russell Reconstitution page also has a list of all the additions and deletions for 2017, although I'm not sure that's easier than just searching through the main file for ticker symbols.

Name: ^____Beat the Average Joe____^

Long: BRK-B
Shorts: None

Note the name change. Basically, all funds ranked higher than mine have beaten the average Joe. (I presume a lot will since there are no hedge fund "fees" accounted for in this competition).

Would be interesting to see if individual stock picking can beat a diversified index strategy when fees are virtually eliminated in the equation.

BABA is not in the Russell file I checked, probably because it's foreign based. You may want to edit your pick(s) before the Monday morning deadline. There are probably more than 40 companies run by thieves, some even in Russell, but you might want to short them instead of going long :).

Regalia Absolute Equity

After an excellent first year, we are looking forward to repeating our debut performance, and bringing our clients market beating returns with our strategic and innovated investment strategies.

This year we plan to go long on AMZN (all hail our eventual and inevitable overlords), MA (remember all those things money CAN buy), and TXN (kids are still using TI-83s, right?). On the short side, we are planning on going with GME once again.

LONG

A quick note on your long pick, NVDA. You can't pick it x3 for your three long spots - each has to be a different stock. As such, your portfolio as it stands under the contest rules will be 1/4 long NVDA, and 1/4 each short M, BBBY, and SHLD. If you want Nvidia to have a bigger share of your portfolio, consider making fewer short picks, since each stock is equally weighted.

Tanelorn Capital: Better Lucky Than Good
Our concentrated portfolios are designed to debunk that myth that short selling is risky and remind potential investors that no matter how cheap a stock is, there is always 100% to be made on the way to zero.

Short:
OMNT - Ominto Inc. (last price $3.37)

We know some may take issue with our unusual approach so we also offer a more diversified short-bias alternative portfolio for those seeking a more conservative approach to short selling:

Short:
SHLD - Sears
WATT - Energous Corp
WINS - Wins Finance Holdings

On a final note, we want to offer our best wishes to fellow short sellers whodidntante (SHLD) and goblue100 (WINS) for 2018. In the interest of the contest, we will note be choosing either of their single short picks as our top short pick, although we admit both are strong candidates and were under close consideration.

Snap Inc, the Snapchat parent (ticker SNAP), is not in the Russell, so you're not missing out. This was discussed previously in this thread. My post about BABA was not intended to imply all their entries were eligible - I was just correcting the ones I knew for sure weren't.

Tanelorn,
I would like to point out that the "bad" symmetry for the short seller is a risk reversal for the LONG position.

In other words Hedge Funds should never limit their gains to 100%, they have to think bigger!

Thanks. You're right about capped returns, and while no one has gotten over 100% in the contest for their final result, at least in the few years I've been participating, individual stocks picks certainly have. In practice, for shorting to do better, you want to get some margin on your short position, say 3-5x, and you can make 400% or whatever instead of 100% when they go bankrupt, turn out to be a fraud, etc. of course that still won't compete with a good day for a cryptocurrency stock (CNET recently for example), but does pretty well in absolute terms as long as you don't get forced out by your broker in a squeeze. Luckily our contest short sellers don't have to worry about any of those issues.

I realized today that I used the 2016 list originally linked, and that JMBA is not on the 2017 list. It might be too late, but I'd like to swap in JCP if JMBA is disqualified.

Overthought:

I fixed your pick. That was my fault linking to the wrong year. Also, contest entries are available to view here:

I'll also update the OP with the link. Good luck all this year!

I don't see the benchmark "I don't know and I don't care".
Wiki To some, the glass is half full. To others, the glass is half empty. To an engineer, it's twice the size it needs to be.

I could put in some benchmarks for reference. What would an IDKAIDK fund look like? 1 long position of VTI?
