BBC: Fifty Things That Made the Modern Economy

Post by tadamsmar » Sat Jun 03, 2017 3:21 am

They have a nice podcast on the history of the index fund.

Bogle had the idea of the index fund back in 1951. After Nobel Laureate Paul Samuelson made a strong argument for it in the 1974 paper"Challege to Judgement", Bogle decided to give it a go. I guess the time seemed right with that kind of backing for the idea. At first it did not catch on and was called "Bogle's Folly".

This article by Bogle covers the same territory:

Another one of the fifty BBC podcasts, entitled "The Tally Stick" explains that money is just debt that can be freely traded.

Yes I listened to it on the radio about an hour ago. It was nicely done and can be downloaded here:

Bogle and Samuelson figure prominently, with a bit of Buffett in there too.

The main page for BBC's "50 Things That Made the Modern Economy" is here:

They appear to still have a few more episodes to go but there are some interesting topics on the list and available for downloading, including the "Tally Stick" one you mentioned. I just downloaded it along with a few others to listen to later, including one on the "Haber-Bosch process". Thanks tadamsmar for posting.

If you're interested, the "Haber-Bosch process" was covered in episode 7 of "Connections"
