Just made 2017 IRA contributions... so relaxing!

Postby Pete12 » Fri Feb 17, 2017 11:13 am

Almost 8 months in of being officially a "Boglehead"...

Today I made our 2017 Roth IRA contributions at Vanguard and I have to say it was such a relaxing experience! No agonizing about what will happen with the markets, no listening to my old FA drone on and on while proposing 8 different funds, no worrying about doing dollar cost averaging versus dumping it all in now... simply a few clicks on the Vanguard website, put my order in for Total Stock Market Index and boom- that's it. Just have to keep an eye on my AA as time goes on.

I would never have had the confidence to do this without you guys - thank you! :sharebeer

Congrats! Just a friendly reminder that you can still contribute to your 2016 IRA until 4/18.

Thanks! We managed to do our 2016 contribution last summer, unfortunately prior to that we missed out due to the way the cookie crumbled...

well done! yes it is a freeing feeling. Now max out the 401K and the rest of your options. HaHa
Max out your tax sheltered retirement accounts with inexpensive, well diversified, index funds and you will beat 90% of all investors.

Congrats! Joining in your celebration as I too am a new Boglehead and made our 2017 contributions via Vanguard with much freedom from fear and noise. We dropped our Financial Advisor 6 months ago and transferred to Vanguard with DH’s trepidation - but now he is completely on board the Bogle-Train with self-investing in VG low cost index funds. Receiving the 1099Bs solidified DH’s support - seeing the Advisor Fees on the closed accounts :moneybag  vs NO FEES for the new accounts with Vanguard 1099Bs :D …incredibly liberating! Portfolio Expense Ratios really do make a HUGE difference.
Thank you Bogleheads! :sharebeer

Keeping it Simple,

I never do that due to fear not not working long enough to rack up $6,500 in earned income.

Which is mainly just paranoia, plus a respectful nod to Murphy and his minions.

I too am a newborn boglehead - toddler of about 18 months actually - and am also relishing the same peace of mind described in the OP. Deciding that I Know Nothing about the future and Neither Does Anyone Else is liberating!
