Bored when market is closed

Post by InvestorNewb » Mon Jan 19, 2015 1:02 pm

Does anyone else get bored/annoyed when the market is closed? I was looking forward to making some money today but forgot about the holiday.

It should be open 24/7/365.

You need to find something else to occupy your time. If memory serves me, you're in Canada right? It's not a holiday in Canada so I assume you're making some money at your job.

There are plenty of foreign markets around the world. Don't limit yourself to the US exchanges or accounts with US brokerages. The internet opens the world to you.

When the markets are closed you can browse credit card bonus offers and various frequent-travel rewards. This game is specialized for one's goals, complex, always changing, providing fast feedback, and -- if you do it well -- saving real money.

I think it would be much more boring to stare at the market fluctuations all day.

Review your 2014 taxes and 2015 tax planning. It's at least as boring as the market noise.

Newb, check out the thread about the market in China going a bit whacko today. THEE market isn't closed... one market is. And, you may have lost some money today depending on how much international/EM you have, if any. :o

No need to be bored. Go read a book, get some exercise, watch a movie, watch paint dry, or do pretty much anything else other than obsess over investing 24/7/365.

To hell with boring old equity markets and their silly irreverent hours and days of operation…

Get into the “real game” of FX trading: it does go 24/7/365 from from time zone to the next. Go-Go-Go!

I recall reading one of Schwager’s “Market Wizards” books in which one of his interviewees traded FX and kept quote machines all over his home and office… including on his night table so he could make trades in the middle of the night when he couldn’t sleep.

If the market was open 365/24/7 when would you find the time to shop for food, eat it, defecate it, etc? How about the clothes you buy? How about spending time cleaning up the ladybugs or setting traps for your mice?

U.S. markets are open some days and closed on others...of course...what of it?

To me, the point of following a Bogle-type approach to investing is that I can minimize the attention I pay to the market and devote myself to the rest of my life. It is the rest of my life beyond investing that is what is really important.

Sold a Chocolate/Candy company on Friday in a limit sale. Sold a few hours too early. That company gave me a quick high, didn't even own it for 7 days. Willy Wonka to get more chocolate and my sugar fix. :D

I find holidays in general to be boring, now that I don't have to work. At least most businesses were open today.

Go to a nearby casino and lose some money there. At least you`d be spreading your money around.

It wouldn't change my investing strategy at all if the markets were only open one day a month.

Have you considered watching the Swiss Franc currency markets? Those should give you some 24/7 excitement for the near future anyway.

It should be open 24/7/365.
Once humans aren't really needed (and we might be there now), this will happen. Right now, we have physical exchanges with human traders (including those who are "making the market"). This all can be automated. Much of it has already been. When it all is, I wouldn't be shocked at all to see 24/7/365 markets.

Do some Forex trading - Alpari have been finding it pretty exciting of late. Their employees less so.

Maybe go to a casino or something. I find playing poker to be more fun than staring at the meaningless up and down movements of stock indices during the day. Of course I have been playing my son's 3DS when he is in school. Also a better way to cure boredom.
Never underestimate the power of the force of low cost index funds.

How's that fool-proof roulette strategy of yours working out? Why not make some money that way while the market is closed?
