POLL: What was the first stock you ever bought?

POLL: What was the first stock you ever bought?

I can't help it. I am so tempted to buy BRK-B.  One share through Sharebuilder. After much reading over the past weekend (The Millionaire Next Door, Serious Money, The Boglehead's Guide to Investing and Retirement, etc.) I know I need to start with a simple index fund first, but I am still so tempted to get this other one (Berkshire Hathaway).

For the next two years my goals are to pay off a car loan first, Vanguard target Roth IRA for me and then maybe the Star fund. Going to work my way up to the three-tier portfolio too, and am tempted with some ETF's, TCEIX, a couple Oakmark and a Russell one, I have my list on a sticky note with tickers I am going to watch. There was one Schwab index with a really low expense ratio. Also watching the Vanguard Health Care.

Just curious what other's posters' first stock they ever bought was and/or through what broker?

Intention was for a "buy and hold" stock. (30+ years?)

Thanks,

I would suggest that no individual stock should be bought as a "buy and hold" investment. Even the seemingly best companies can fall on hard times over a period that long. Strange unpredictable things can happen, such as the Exxon and BP oil spills, GM bankruptcy, etc. For buy and hold, a mutual fund, preferably an index fund, is more suitable IMO.

Mine was Delta  (with etrade)! I count that as my best money ever spent. I would rather loose all my money on trade number 1 then on my last one  .

When I was a senior at the U. of Michigan, in 1951, I won money at an illegal, Toledo gambling joint. Along with a present for my mother, a new cord suit, and a new baseball glove, I purchased 100 shares in two companies in a new industry. Television Equipment Corporation and Trad Television Corporation. I still have the beautifully engraved certificates.

100 Shares of China Mobile in 2004. Sold half when it went to around $100 per share.

I started working in 1999, and all anyone talked about at work was what stocks they were buying. I bought a few - luckily I didn't have much money so it was a relatively cheap lesson to learn. I don't remember the specific stocks but at least one of them, related to the Linux fad of the time, lost 98% of its value before I sold it, and has since been de-listed.

Altria (MO, "Philip Morris") in '04, but in the 1980s I received a few stocks as gifts, with the paper certificate: IBM, Melville (later part of CVS), Xerox...
Oh, I guess I briefly bought and sold Sony in the late 80s or early 90s, so that beats Altria. But I still have the Altria!

If one doesn't count the stock my employer contributes to my 401k plan I've never bought a stock.

Edited to add:
I have inherited various stocks.

When the small company I worked for went public, most of my co-workers and I bought shares. I sold it 10 years later at a small loss. The company was later bought out.

Bought some shares in Tesla back in 2011. Wish I would have held onto them until now. I sold them for a very small profit, instead of a good profit.

I now own some Tesla and one Berkshire B, just because I live in Omaha and would like to go to his yearly meeting sometime before he dies.

How can you be "late" if you are young? Sounds like you're early?

Anyway, why did you buy only 2 shares? Why not 3? Or 10? Or 1?

My first stock was an IPO. A friend worked for the company and told all his friends that the company was going public and we should "get in on the action". So I bought 100 shares at $5 which at the time was a significant amount to me. I held the stock for a year or so and eventually sold for $16. Thankfully, this did not give me the itch to invest in this type of speculation afterward. The friend who touted the stock in the first place had restricted shares of the company and ended up losing significantly. The company is still around but has gone through a number of mergers, acquisitions, privatizing, etc. since but if I hadn't gotten out when I did I think my investment would be worth exactly zero had I kept it.
This turned out to be one of the better investments in my early years of stock investing. Celia, this may have been your company. :P
Thanks for bringing back the memories.

Family members, whose wealth grew from a concentrated portfolio of fewer than 10 position, gifted to me small amounts of AMEX, LLY, BUD, and SGP decades ago.

My first purchase was in 1998, iirc: a company that NTT bought less than a week after I opened the position.

The bulk of our US, and developed international, holdings are in individual equities, though, so my "first" isn't as meaningful as it would be for some forum contributors...

I guess it is all relative. I should have started when I began my career 6 years ago. All that wasted time :(

I bought 2 because it was really all we could afford at the time and I wasn't sure how the company was going to do. It was my first time ordering stocks and working through a broker.

In the late 70s.....50 shares of Playboy, the stock certificate had a beautiful picture of a Playgirl in a Playboy bunny outfit. Many men bought one share to get the certificate to frame. Playboy stopped selling single shares to stop that. Unfortunately when they all went to book entry shares, I turned mine in. For what I got I should have kept it.

Incidently, how many Bogleheads are old enough to have held mutual fund shares in certificate form? I held 2, Janus I can remember specifically not the other. Janus even issued year end capital gains in certificate form, at one time I had about 6 or 8 Janus Fund certificates..........Gordon

I never bought an individual stock.

I did have ETFs VSS, EWC, and VWO at one time, but since have sold them to buy VTIAX once it re-organized and now stick to mutual funds (mostly admiral index funds).

Home Depot. Read an article in Money magazine 1994 recommending it. kept it as part of large cap allocation after I decided to go passive. Eventually donated it Vanguard Charitable donor advised fund.

ORCL (Oracle) at Merrill Lynch full service broker in 1997. Bought 100 stocks at $3500. I think paid !% fee ($35). Afterwards bought many stocks until 2000 with ML and transferred account to TD.
Sold all individual stock after Boglehead conversion since 2005-6.I have not bought single individual stock or bond since. Best turning point of my investing life!

Studebaker-Packard.

In high school I had saved up some Christmas and birthday present money [$30 ?? -- a lot at that time] I felt sorry for Studebaker-Packard and wanted to help the company out [in defense, I was 15 and not trained in economics].

My high school was in Manhattan and on my way home I went down to Wall Street, walked into several lobbies, saw a sign that said "brokerage" and went upstairs to buy the stock. It wasn't that simple since I had to get my parents to countersign a document [?] and I had to go back another day to complete the deal.

First single stock I bought was Facebook (since sold).

Have owned mutual funds since the 1980s.

The only brokerage products I buy now are VTI and VXUS (no load through Vanguard).

BTW, I just finished selling all my BRK/B and converted it into VTI and VXUS. I'll do the same with the last of my single stocks (AAPL) next year.

I bought about 300 shares of Ubiquiti (UBNT) because the owner bought my local sports franchise. Sold for a small profit and then bought a few more shares with the profit. This way I still enjoy following the stock, but don't get heartburn when it drops in value.

Bought 100 shares Texas Oil & Gas (TXO) in about 1977 from Wagenseller & Durst in Southern California. It did great during the oil crisis/gas shortage years back then. It did so well I decided I didn't fit at a itty bitty brokerage like Wagenseller & Durst so I moved to Merrill Lynch. Some time after TXO got bought by US Steel I sold it. About 1987 I moved to Schwab and have remained there ever since for the most part, primarily in mutual funds and now ETFs.

Within the last couple of years I was disposing of some old records and was amazed at how high the trading commissions were back in the 1970's/1980's. The commission on a trade with a total value of $3,000 could exceed $200. That's a lot now and it was a lot more 30 years ago.

Bausch & Lomb - I think it was 1968

I was 17 years old and a classmate's father was a lens grinder with B&L. The company was attempting to offer contact lens but had recently been turned down by the Food and Drug, I believe. The price dropped a good bit but he told me that approval would surely come. He was a grinder so I don't think he had inside info, just an informed view. So I think it dropped to maybe $15 and my mother and I bought some. Think I bought $1500. Sure enough, in several months approval came and price jumped north of $30. I sold.

Sometime in the 60's when I was about 15, I got my father to sell the few shares of ESSO he had given me (he worked for them) and buy Ling Temco Vought (LTV) which did quite well.

That's an excellent question. It was so long ago that I have forgotten. I did very well with individual stocks, but given that this was during the great bull market, it says nothing about my investing skill.

The first equity invesment I ever made was the T Rowe Price growth stock fund, which I bought $500 of in about october of 1972. I sold it for about a 50% loss sometime in 1974 or 75.

The next foray came in about 1981, when I bought about 5k or so of United Technologies, and put about $1000 into Bentley Labs, which I did on a whim because of an analysts report that came across my desk. After the fact, I got the annual report and realized it had a qualified opinion because of some litigation over an ownership of patents dispute, but I just held onto it anyway. UT ended up flat to down over the next couple of years, and Bentley quintupled as they got their legal issue settled and were acquired, I think, by Baxter Travenol, which was then acquired by American Hospital supply.

I can remember thinking that it was great that I was getting some AHS stock in the acquisition, and I looked up the performance of the company. From the early 70s to the mid 80s, the earnings increased by about ten fold, but the stock price didn't go anywhere (remember what was happening to rates) and the PE multiple contracted from an early 70s 70-80 times down to about 8 times earnings or so by the mid 80s.

I actually just bought one share of BRK-B, in order to get a discount on my GEICO car insurance. I think I learned about the discount on this forum. As it turns out the discount is "up to 8%;" if you have other discounts in effect then the BRK-B discount is lowered, in my case quite a bit. Still, there is some small discount and the opportunity cost of holding that share in perpetuity is pretty near zero.

Me too........not sure of the exact date but within a yr or so. McDonnell Air and Douglas Air had proposed to merge under certain terms and Douglas Air was way undervalued based on the proposed exchange. Boldly(or ignorantly) bought a few shares of Douglas before the merger was approved and made a "huge" return. Seem to remember 30% or more but memory might be foggy. Little did I know that these mergers don't always go through so just got lucky with stock #1. Needless to say, stock # 2 taught me some valuable lessons so that eventually I became a mutual fund investor. Fortunately I learned that lesson early in life when I did not have much to lose.

36 years old, and I've never bought or owned (directly) a share of stock. I suppose I should try it out at some point, but I don't have a 'play money' allocation and don't intend on adding one in the near future.

I'm not sure, but I believe it was IBM. It was either in the late 60's or early 70's, and I invested $5,000 which was a lot for me at that time. IBM shares were extremely high at the time. I still have it. It's worth a little over $67,000 now.

I can't quite recall whether I bought this or was given it, but the first was in 1974 and it was Freeport McMoRan -- the predecessor to the current-day FCX, which now is back to its original name but went through several divisions (Freeport Gold, Freeport Exploration, Freeport Oil & Gas) and more recently is back in one piece. I sold this decades ago, and now own it only as one of the larger investments held by FSDPX (Fidelity Select Materials). "McMoRan" the name was made up of components of the names of the original three principals.

My father gave me my first stock, AT&T sometime in the '70s. It had many babies, causing complications, and in fact, stimulated my interest in index mutual funds. Thanks, Dad.
