Its interesting how this thread was very popular last year in a rising market. Now that the market is down/volatile, people aren't posting their annual gains/losses on this much!

Re: What are you up YTD? [Year To Date]
Q1 2018 Update: +1.24% YTD through March 31.
Almost exactly on track for 5% annual, which is my 2018 target.
Portfolio this year is defensive, with limited use of leverage, overweight cash, diminutive equity exposure, conservative alternatives positions, hedges in place, and some late cycle plays (e.g. commodities).
That being said, 5% return is not bad for a 33% cash & equivalents portfolio!

Oh my. After checking today, my hand picked 10 fund actively managed portfolio is up 9.5% YTD. Only 1 of the 10 has a negative performance. I feel sad for all those that believe such market out-performance with all this diversification is not possible or, at best, pure luck. That's a lot of the more vocal ones here. I do feel a bit of guilt.

That philosophy does not imply that it is impossible to reach financial independence by investing as you do, but it does provide reasons for preferring to make a different choice than you have.

Pretty much matching that of the S&P 500, which is what my investments are in (ignoring some savings in bank and savings bonds).

Re: What are you up YTD? [Year To Date]
We all have different asset allocations and investments. Also some are accumulating (buying) and some are drawing down (selling) so we all have different returns. (We also don’t all use the same metric to report our returns as has been discussed previously.) This thread is purely about sharing the percent one is up year to date and maybe info about how it’s invested.md&pharmacist wrote: ↑Thu May 31, 2018 10:47 pm Oh my. New investor and new forum member here. Happy to say that my account is up 12.1% YTD despite taking a beating yesterday.
My portfolio is a blend of carefully chosen market leader equities (50%) anchored by some index funds (25%) plus a few speculative plays and commodities.
Update: After Friday's trading session, I'm up 17%.

Re: What are you up YTD? [Year To Date]
hmmm... my spreadsheet says that I am up YTD by 0.46% using =SUM(((1+XIRR(A3:A19,B3:B19,10%))^(((DATE(2018,5,31)-(DATE(2017,12,29)))/365))-1))
what is odd is that the amount of my total contributions YTD (no withdrawals) is greater than the difference between my current portfolio value and the starting value...
so... is that odd to anyone? did i make a mistake somewhere in setting up the calculation?
i benchmark my portfolio against a portfolio of 100% VT and mirror all contributions and transactions. my portfolio is currently underperforming VT by ~1%. at the end of Q1, i was outperforming the benchmark by ~0.4%. my actual portfolio tracks the VT benchmark pretty closely, despite having increased fees and expenses.

2018 YTD = 1.84%
My portfolio is 80% stocks, 20% bonds, with a little cash left for dip buying. Most of my spare cash was used on the dip on 4/2. I didn't know it until I got home, but 6 or 7 of my buy limit orders were triggered that day.
Edit: BTW, I don't really use PER's. My return calculations just use the final closing prices minus any contributions. I also don't consider cash as part of my portfolio, as sometimes it mingles with my emergency funds, depending on when ESPP rolls around.

My active account is up 12.91% as of Friday according to personal capital. Had a really good January, and then doubled my original investment in UVXY when the VIX spiked. Since then my success has been trending down, but I made around 3% back Friday which helped the numbers a lot.
Re: What are you up YTD? [Year To Date]
+1.3% total return( include interest and Div). Portfolio is about 60% equity and 40% fixed income. Had few bad etf like Vanguard High Div in the mixed that lowered the performance. Plan to go to VTI when my tax situation allows.
Re: What are you up YTD? [Year To Date]
I'm not sure if your formulas are right. I just starting using Morningstar's free (with the option to buy X-Ray) Portfolio tracker about a month ago, and its calculations are nearly the same as my spreadsheet. Over the course of a year, I'll see if they start to diverge by a substantial amount.bgf wrote: ↑Fri Jun 01, 2018 7:45 am hmmm... my spreadsheet says that I am up YTD by 0.46% using =SUM(((1+XIRR(A3:A19,B3:B19,10%))^(((DATE(2018,5,31)-(DATE(2017,12,29)))/365))-1))

It's pretty cool that you can update the Morningstar portfolio to add dividends and newly bought shares.
