1.11% through Feb 28.
Targeting 5% annual in 2018, so a bit ahead of the curve due to outperformance of certain asset classes I’m holding in the first two months of the year.
I have a non-Boglehead, absolute return style portfolio - but still enjoy this site quite a bit and favor low cost indexing for the equities portion of my portfolio. :happy

Beardstown Ladies called this morning before the open to let me know YTD the value of my portfolio is UP a bit over 20%. I feel incredibly fortunate to have had these results so within a couple years of my retirement. Just a lucky dog.
You will need at least 80/20 to get 20%. If you have 60/40 mix, then forget about.
But the Beardstown Ladies count contributions, not just share appreciation and dividends.
And I read somewhere that their book's publisher was sued for that omission.

80/20 portfolio, +6.6% YTD, thanks mainly to outperformance by one fund (PRIMECAP Odyssey Aggressive Growth, POAGX).

Well, unfortunately, I am not using index funds.

I basically invest in companies with high returns on capital employed, that have a history of growing both sales and income, and that have an attractive net margin. I avoid structurally unattractive industries. If my portfolio was an index fund it would be comprised of moaty companies with profitable growth.

-0.50% (Maybe a fraction worse, like -0.52%, If I factored in our tiny but 100% equity IRAs)

AA is roughly 70/30, tilted small and value and Int'l. My portfolio is my own design, but could well end up a caution. After I came up with it, I backtested it and yes, it looked great - but the past 2+ years of returns have been very... average! (wry grin).

gotcha. i own three individual companies as part of my US allocation, but the majority of our portfolio is indexed. i asked because i was not aware of any major index that returned ~8.5%.

i don't know how your strategy has performed historically, but congrats on a huge first quarter!

For the first quarter of this year I'm down 0.6% overall, on a portfolio that is about 50% stock. This is my first quarterly decline since 3Q 2015. (Remember the China scare?) However, I'm still up 7.3% since a year ago, so I don't feel bad about it.

Yes.

I was interested in checking extract performance in a down market because I am considering a switch to a one fund 60/40 portfolio (in order to simplify) using either Vanguard LifeStrategy Moderate Growth (VSMGX) which is minus 0.56% year to date, or Vanguard Balanced Index Fund Admiral Shares (VBIAX) which is minus 0.91% year to date.
