Re: What are you up YTD?
Finished the year up 16%. Profited from the decline in long term interest rates in the first half of the year, but gave back some gains in the fourth quarter after buying oil and the Japanese yen. I'm going into 2015 with an allocation that's roughly 20% precious metals, 20% WTI and oil majors, 30% equities (mostly EM), 15% Japanese yen, 15% junk bonds. I think we will see rates rise this year across the curve, and inflation expectations should rise as well. Longer term, I expect a serious bout of stagflation.

How do you see one's YTD in vanguard.com?
I guess I need to wait as vanguard only shows YTD up to Nov 30th.

I am very proud to be able to give this answer: I have no idea.
Re: What are you up YTD?
70/10/20 sitting on a lot of cash, need to get it into bonds but just waiting a few to let things sort out. Want to be 70/30 or so. I am up 8.9% so vanguard says.

How does morningstar calculate the rate of return ? They report that I'm up 10.42% for the year. But here are my holdings:
VTI: +10.95%
VXUS: -6.86%
VCE: +9.45%
VNQ: +24.83%
Something doesn't seem right.

Nope, that is why I said change in value instead of rate of return and specified that the percentage included contributions. Perhaps I need to work on a way to be clearer in my communications.ruralavalon wrote:Are you from Beardstown, Illinois?TheTimeLord wrote:The change in value of my investment holdings was +15.11% in 2014. Using the wiki:Calculating personal returns spreadsheet:

Portfolio return as of 12-31-2014
YTD 8.92%

I added a lot more shares across my various accounts and have no idea what my total return was for 2014!

Re: What are you up YTD?
According to vanguard my return for the year with my three fund portfolio is 6.8%. That's with a 75/25 stock to bond ratio. Also have 30% of stock in international.
Honestly I expected it to be a bit higher since my YTD at 11/30/14 was 9.6%. December must have been pretty bad for three fund portfolios with my ratios.

Stocks: 67%
Bonds: 33% (need to rebalance)
Up: 7.74%
Of course, since the original post says nothing about which method to use to calculate the returns, I'm not really sure what our answers really tell us apart from everybody is up.
The 7.74% above is calculated using the spreadsheet from the Bogleheads Wiki on "Calculating personal returns".

Re: What are you up YTD?
I was up only 4.8% with a portfolio that was about 37% equities. Calculated from Jan 1, 2014 to Jan 1, 2015. I am neither in accumulation stage nor the withdrawal stage since our living expenses are covered by SS and a small pension. I did take some taxable dividends but accounted for those.

It was the international stock, that was the biggest loser by far. It lost 8% in December and 13% from September; only 4.5% for the year though.cusetownusa wrote:. Also have 30% of stock in international.

Makes sense...most of my new contributions have been going to my international fund...hopefully one day my international fund will be the one doing the heavy lifting.Uncle Pennybags wrote:It was the international stock, that was the biggest loser by far. I think you were perfectly clear, and on this forum, I think the number you presented is more important when reflecting upon your goals. My rate of return was almost completely a product of my chosen asset allocation; what I was up YTD (which is actually what the title of this thread asked) was reflective of my progress towards retirement.TheTimeLord wrote:Nope, that is why I said change in value instead of rate of return and specified that the percentage included contributions. Incidentally, I was up 24.2% in 2014. My rate of return was far lower (6-7%), but why should I care?
Retirement investing is a marathon.

Re: What are you up YTD?
It's not really clear to me that OP is asking for increase in asset balance, as opposed to total return.kenyan wrote: I think you were perfectly clear, and on this forum, I think the number you presented is more important when reflecting upon your goals. Anyone starting from scratch would have an infinite % growth in assets (unless their total return was -100%), so IMO, that is not a very interesting number to look at.
Increase in asset balance is the sum of your contributions, withdrawals, and return, whether positive or negative.
Of course, the rate of contributions and withdrawals is completely under your control, and therefore completely predictable.
The rate of return is however, unpredictable. So, IMO that's the more interesting number.

This is what Vanguard lists under my Personal Performance tab:
Beginning balance: $14,623.88
Purchases & withdrawals: $3,364.99
Investment returns: $361.53
Investment return/Beginning balance = 2.4% return
Investment return/Ending balance = 2.0% return
Investment return/Middle balance = 2.2% return
Don't know how you wanna calculate it. But my return is somewhere in the 2.0-2.4% range YTD.

The very excellent spreadsheet tool I took from someone on this board (who didn't seem to embed their name in the sheets I have used) tells me:
3.2% first quarter 2015 I believe that more than the 3.3% the kludgy spreadsheet I originally put together is telling me.
55% stocks. of which 50% international. Small-value and small tilt in domestic and international.

13 10 6
19 14 5

13 12 12
14 11 14
7 8 8
Bonds are 53% intermediate treasuries, 28% TIAA TRAD, 19% individual 10-year TIPS
