Discrepancies in Today's Vanguard Pricing

Post by stevej » Fri Jun 21, 2013 8:48 pm

Can anyone explain the following discrepancies:
- today the S&P 500 was up 0.27% but the Vanguard 500 Index fund was down $0.36
- the Vanguard Total Stock Market Fund was down 0.10 and the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF was up 0.21
- the Vanguard High Dividend Fund was down 0.01 but the Vanguard High Dividend ETF was up 0.43
- the Vanguard Dividend Apprec Fund was unchanged but the Vanguard Dividend Apprec ETF was up 0.27
Any feedback would be great.
this is my first posting.

Pretty sure it has to do with quarterly distributions. For example, here's a link to the 500 index fund:

And here's all the funds with quarterly distributions in June:

If I'm correct, you should see the transactions tomorrow, or Tues at the absolute latest, and the payouts by Tues too.

Bottom line: it's all OK, as the distributions will make-up for today's loss, and in the long term they should pay off even more.

Welcome. Many Vanguard funds went "ex-dividend" today. That is the NAV is reduced by the amount of the dividend paid out today by the fund. The ETFs will go ex-dividend next week.
