It means the long, slow process of investing regularly through my IRA and through my 401(k), even though I never have earned over $55,000, adhering to a buy, hold, and re-balance policy, and investing in low-cost, preferably index, funds made the journey worthwhile.

Thank you. I must admit when i first read this i said to myself "spoken like a true Boglehead". Of course i was looking for something more fundamental like i finally bought the...., i feel...., i can now.... etc, etc. But i must admit your reply was perfect.

Can I ask how you came up with your number?

I'm 30 and I have my number in my head but depending on inflation, I'm sure I'll adjust it.

How does one determine one's number? Is it a multiple of one's annual income?

I really just try to save as much as I can of what I earn and live below my means.

It's an honest questions for people on this forum. When do you know you have "enough" in your portfolio?

Gordon,
Congratulations on achieving such an important milestone, one that's been consistently shifting for me. First, one must decide which number to pick. First there's the "I'll never be hungry, cold, or without health care again" number. I hit that a few years ago. Then there's the "not only will I never be cold, hungry, or without health care, but now I can indulge in some hobbies and travel a bit" number. I'm on track to reach that number within the next 4 years when I will turn 50. Finally, there's the number that satisfies all of the above, but includes more expensive hobbies, more extensive travel and creates an inheritance for my children that will enable them to enjoy the same things. That number will take a bit longer.

Thanks for the congratulations, everyone. About my number that some of asked about: it's less than many here might want to live on, but it's enough for me to live comfortably, if not luxuriously, which is how I want to live anyway. I turn seventy in July and plan to retire at the end of the leave year (January 11, 2014), so my number no doubt is different from a number that others might have, particularly the thirty-year old who asked how I came up with my number.

(Edited to add the word "how" in the last sentence.)

Congrats! Nice success story. :D

At first I thought maybe this was a thread about playing roulette based on the title. My number is 29 if that's the case.

I'm two double ups from hitting my number here. (age 33)

Yes. My target allocation has gone from 72/28 in 2011 to 66/34 in 2012 to 60/40 in 2013 (equity/fixed income). I haven't implemented this yet, but I plan to do so, probably at the end of this month. (I know some here feel 60/40 is too aggressive a portfolio in retirement, but it is an allocation with which I'm comfortable.)

Congrats Gordon - I can see from your comments that stay the course was a key aspect of your plan. I hope you have better luck (timing) with your number than I had with mine. I reached mine briefly near the end of 2007 and it took me more than a couple years to get it back.

As a couple of posters above have mentioned, does anyone have a recommendation of a good source (book, online, or otherwise) for actually calculating "THE number," and how to get there in terms of annual savings and current investments? Obviously a lot can change between now and then (especially for those of us on here in our 20s and 30s) but the couple calculators I have played around with online either seem to be very vague, or don't really take into account the factors that may go into it. Any suggestions would be welcome.
