How do you define your success in our life, career and job?

Post by Glasgow » Sun Sep 23, 2018 1:47 am

I define my success in
Life:
- Getting educated (graduate degree), a good career making good money and raising my children to get graduate degree and have good jobs. My nuclear family will be still loving each other (once they're about my age or older) and continue having dinner frequently (at least monthly) for the rest of our lives.

Career:
- Getting well paid (relatively)
- (Something I miss here such as achieve something significant?)

Job:
- Completed a project satisfactorily and it's helpful to others.

What about yours?

I did scientific research, so success was clearly defined for me by others in terms of number of publications, citations of those publications, amount of grant money raised, and how well my protégés did after they left my lab and started their own careers.

As for life, there is more to it than career and job.

Short and long term happiness. (as long as it doesn't hurt others)

I'm a religious person, so a good part of the answer to this question has to do with that.

Being highly paid or wealthy is actually not a direct indicator of success for me. Rather: to do meaningful work and to be improving at it, to live in security and provide a stable home for my family, to provide a very good education to my children, to live relatively safely and free from stress, to be healthy, to eventually retire, to be known as a kind and faithful person, etc.

Life - being happy, healthy, with a close bond with a loving family, and raising great, well mannered. smart kids is the fruit of our labor

All the rest is a distant # 2

career - having a positive impact on others (healthcare) while being able to support my family. I find fulfillment from this.

job - saving lives

The only goal of my career is to make enough money to retire. Once I can retire, I will have been successful.

Life - having a loving family and a long and loving marriage and being able to provide a decent standard of living for us.
Career - reaching my approximate potential - having few regrets
Job - had a variety of different areas to manage. Success was making each area better than when I arrived and treating staff fairly with a focus on having them reach their potential. Finally, moving on to a different challenge before I became stale.

Life - loving healthy family

Job/career - money to live and some mental stimulation to make the time pass well

None of above can be taken for granted, takes luck and effort.

You are not your vocation. You are not your bank account. You are just you.

Health, family, friends, hobbies is all that matters.

Someone who sets a good example for my daughter and is a good husband.

For others, someone they see as "real" and trustworthy.

The rest? Who cares.

Years ago, it was extremely different. That was about climbing the career ladder to buy more crap - which I thought would make you happy and show success. Glad I realized the fallacy in that :)

Great thread.

In my opinion, success in life is knowing when you die you have loved the folks close to you and know they have loved you.

Success in life and career is all about doing whatever it takes to accomplish the first sentence above.

NO ONE remembers what anyone really accomplishes in life. Think about Steve Jobs. A great innovator and entrepreneur. Does ANYONE think about him anymore? Honestly, his name came up in a conversation yesterday I had I completely forgot about him already. Just shows in the end very few accomplishments leave any lasting impression on anyone. Who folks do remember is your immediate family and their affects on your own life while they are awake and after they pass away.

Good luck.

Being able to live in the moment throughout life as I have control only on my actions and not results.

This resonates with me.
As far success outside of career, keep my loving relationship with my family. Only thing that matters.

"the real work is to see the world as real as it is and to make ourselves as real as we are in it."
-Gary Snyder

When I was younger my Dad told me that if I can do something I like for a living to do that. Even if I fail at it, you win. You can always go work 40 hours a week somewhere.

I can't imagine doing a job I hate. I know many people who do just that, but it's not for me. The only fear I had about doing something I liked was that I didn't know how I would retire. Then I found Bogleheads and now I feel very good about my later years of life and eventual retirement.
I'm trying to think, but nothing happens

Life: good relationship with family and friends, able to take care of myself until EOL.

Career and job: Enjoy the work. Continue to learn. Do well. I am not ambitious so never wanted to be mgmt.

Some folks are more "externally defined", through input and feedback from the world around them.
Others are more "internally defined" and introspective.
Some more tangible oriented.
Others more esoteric.
And, the balance of all of the above evolves, "or devolves", as we age.

Along the way there's the realization that the idealized notion of maturity, clarity, and other positive traits acquired with age, time, and experience, is not a given.

Actionably: many are materially successful but fail at relationships, and vs vs. Or, successful materially and relationally, but lack internal, or spiritual, harmony.

Interesting question.

How do you define your success in our life, career and job?

Post by Strider » Sun Sep 23, 2018 9:27 am

As to career, job, etc., I am retired, so success will be measured by my having enough resources to care for my wife and me until each of us takes our last breath, and having something left over to fund our bequests (particularly charitable organizations).

As a believer, I believe that my life will be judged by a higher authority. I will strive to measure up to those ideals as best I can while I am alive and leave the world a better place in some small way due to my efforts

Leaving the world a better place than I found it. Being a net positive influence by always telling the truth. Recognizing my own strengths and weaknesses; practicing my strengths and working on my weaknesses. Allowing my children enough independence to make their own mistakes and own their successes. Caring for my wife. The rest is gravy.

OP,

I live my life. Hence, I am successful.

Once on a sunny beach, 2 lawyers argued with each other over half a glass of water. Lawyer A said that it was half full. Lawyer B said that it was half empty. Then, they ask a stranger to decide who was right. The stranger took the half a glass of water and drink it. Then, walk away.
