Buy I-Bond now or wait for new rates

Post by sunnyday » Fri Apr 13, 2012 1:25 pm

I'm planning to make an I Bond purchase soon. Should I make the purchase this month or wait until the new rates are announced?

If you plan to buy them in the next 6 months then it is probably better to buy in April in order to get 3.05%
But if you plan to buy later in the year then it might be better to wait till November in order to skip the 2.2% 6 month time period.

Real Rates most likely will be 0% anyway and we are talking about very small deltas. So, no matter when you will buy this year, difference vs. any other time of the year will be very small.

If this is a long-term investment, whether you buy in April or afterwards will make little difference in the end.
If this is a substitute for a short-term (1 yr) CD, it would be recommended to buy now.

Thanks for the responses. I just bought some. I include I-Bonds as part of my portfolio but will probably withdraw from it in a couple years from it for a new car.

Scheduling mine for April 27th. Get the full month of April's interest for just three days while the money earned paltry interest at my financial institution the other 27.
