Congrats! Does anyone know if Vanguard looks at assets at the household to determine this status or is it individual account owner?

Flagship and Voyager status explained

Post by shawcroft » Tue Feb 01, 2011 10:45 pm

Flagship status means you have the privilege to be on the first ship to hit the rocks
Voyager means you follow the Flagship and are in the next one to hit the rocks.

(JUST KIDDING, FOLKS-I couldn't resist taking off on the straight line)

Congratulations!

I'm confident that you'lll be a flagship member soon.

The best analogy I can make regarding asset levels, is that one's balance goes up and down like waves and tides. Each wave changes your asset balance in the near term, but what is really important is the tide. And the long-term tide is always rising for the buy & hold index investor.

Just.

From another thread:
GammaPoint wrote:If you call in and you are Voyager Select, they pause the videogame they're playing while they talk to you. For Voyager, they put you on hold until a lull in the game.
:)

For what it's worth, the Voyager/Select reps are all the same as the regular reps - or at least most of them are. When your account "populates" on their screen (b/c you enter your SSN in the queue) it tells them how to greet you.

I know this b/c I was having trouble getting inadvertently routed to the "regular" reps instead of Voyager Select so I asked. Maybe I mis-interpreted the answer, but it sure sounded like there's just a big pool of reps that use a different greeting for different people at the "lower" levels (i.e., not Flagship).

FWIW, we're almost Flagship. Woohoo!

Our experience is that it is by household. The Prospectus for VTSMX, for example, says
The account service fee also does not apply to the following... Accounts held by Voyager, Voyager Select, and Flagship members. Membership is based on total household assets held at Vanguard...
and VBS saysMembership is based on total household assets held at Vanguard.

There supposedly were also the secret Voyager Plus and Flagship Plus statuses. I wonder if they still do it.

When vanguard closed the FBO retirement accounts we moved the money to pooled accounts. None of that money counts towards status. It could be 2 million dollars. It's unfortunate. So I'm not getting to flagship in any hurry. :(

I've got Voyager Select because the VG rep said, that since my parents were "Voyager Select", I could tag along as part of the household. It didn't matter that they live at a different address. That's good customer service and I will continue to recommend VG to others (as long as the costs are low...).

VG doesn't count VG funds held outside of VG (e.g., a VG TR fund held @ Schwab or TD Amer.)

Congrats on the savings achievement.

As a flagship, I can tell you the main benefits are whatever
small discounts we get. As far as customer service,
I was happy before and after getting to flagship and see little
difference in that respect. People are trained at account
maintenance and have little knowledge of the funds themselves,
even flagship reps. Flagship reps are very responsive in getting
back to you but can only solve administrative issues. People
on this board understand the funds better than the reps.

I was just going to ask "what's the real value" of the different levels?

I have a 401k at Vanguard and if I move everything I guess I would be Flagship, but unless there is some true benefits (other than I'm not helping myself by having accounts all over the place: Fidelity, Infinity Futures, American Funds, Bank CD's, numerous bank accounts (( :? )) I think I'll just move stuff over slowly, in a tax efficient manner over time.

What am I missing?

Thank you!

There is no real value other than to label yourself Flagship on this forum. That lets you fluff your feathers out without explicitly stating that you have more than a million dollars at Vanguard. OK, you get a free copy of TurboTax, too.

Congratulations. Almost all of us started at zero at some point in the past, then saved and invested, and watched the nut grow. At each step in the process, it was a real pleasure to see some tangible benefit, albeit relatively small. Keep up the great work, because you'll be thankful you did when it comes time to retire or some injury/sickness knocks you out of the workforce.
