Can I ACH push to Vanguard brokerage account?

Post by BogleMelon »

I have my Fidelity Cash Management Account linked to my Vanguard Brokerage account.
I have done transfers both ways before and noticed that when moving the money to Vanguard (pull from Vanguard side), the money is on hold for withdrawals for 7 days.
I was only wondering if there is a way to ACH push the funds from Fidelity (or any other bank account) to Vanguard instead of pulling it so the funds becomes available in a shorter time?

When you say withdrawals do you mean money for trades?

A qualified YES to OP question. You would have to set up a direct deposit service on the Vanguard side and then use those routing and account numbers on the Fidelity (or other bank) side to push funds. I'm not sure what account verification steps exist on the Fidelity (bank) side of things (it likely varies). But compensation through direct deposit, IRS refunds, and the like are all using an ACH function. So unless someone else has already replicated this exact situation, you should give it a try. DO NOT attempt to do it using the routing and account numbers on any brokerage checking checks. That will fail.

We used scheduled ACH transfers to both Vanguard and Fidelity. We do not see a 7 day delay in our buy transactions.

You can setup ACH 'Direct Deposit' on Vanguard's site and they will provide you with a unique routing/account number to provide to the other payer for that purpose.
Vanguard's brokerage accounts do NOT support ACH 'Direct Debit' from the account, which might cause your attempts to link the Vanguard account at another bank to fail... maybe... When you link a financial account for ACH transfers they tend to try to establish it's bi-directional allowing for deposits and debits.
It will definitely fail trying to make bill payments via ACH 'Direct Debit' of the Vanguard account.
