Taking profits on what? I don't think there are a lot of short-term traders here.

Profits? What are those? Anyone owing a broad index portfolio is basically flat for the year and double digit negative for last year.

I only take losses in my taxable account.

I’m buying equities. Buy the dip, don’t sell the rip. LOL

Bingo.
I, too, prefer losses in taxable.

No I'm systematically investing every pay period and maxing my IRA on every January 2 into my chosen asset allocation

Yep, monitoring portfolio and rebalancing as needed (looks like now would be from bonds to stocks, so that could be taking profits in bonds in tax deferred accounts).

I took some profits. Bought VNQI (international REITS) as part of my long term international allocation in September 2022. Disappointed when it paid 23 cents per share instead of the posted 3.50 per share. Sold it in January after a 15% share price increase. I was really hoping to hold that investment for a long time but couldn’t fathom such a big drop in dividends.

I think 'rebalancing' is the more appropriate term here. Probably based on rebalancing bands.

I converted some TIPS fund dividend payments to cash so I can buy more individual TIPS.

I guess that's profit taking of a sort.

I manage a relative's account and am taking advantage of lower markets to "realize" a profit on old non-covered Vanguard STAR Fund holdings. The STAR fund proceeds will be reallocated in Stock (63%) and Bond (37%) Index funds.

There is adequate realized capital gain losses on other transactions (between other TLH partners) to cover the gain on the STAR Fund.

Also, STAR Funds 0.31 Expense ratio will be replaced by 0.04 % and 0.07% expense ratios on the index funds. :D

I am waiting for the profits. But I guess I have dividends and interest, however.

You folks have profits??

OP, you've been on this forum for 7 years, so you likely already know what the general line of thinking is going to be in the replies that you receive. :sharebeer

On a more serious note - yes. It's called rebalancing.

Well, the IRS thinks so.

Or, more accurately, taxable investment income.

Tell me about it! With RMD and a pension is bad enough, but I have no mortgage deduction or tax deferral. I pay more taxes now than when I was working as a lower-income public school teacher.

I've been shoveling from stocks to bonds so much recently that it's strange to do it the other way around now

This whole rebalance thing feels a lot like I'm Sisyphus in a gravel pit... but hey.

I'm so glad I don't have to rebalance anymore, or at least won't need to until 15 years or so
